莫斯科一家报社收到了乌拉尔地区的一名读者来信，这个读者是名叫阿尼金娜的寡妇，她控告当地的领导人营私舞弊。报社决定派记者尤拉到乌拉尔地区去调查。尤拉到了那里，就住在写控告信的寡妇家里。寡妇家的邻居---女工舒拉经常与尤拉接触。渐渐地，他们两人产生了好感。结果寡妇又写信去报社去控告记者。于是记者得出结论：这个寡妇是专门诽谤别人的饶舌者。记者随即离开了那里。后来，尤拉到日内瓦和巴黎去采采访联合国科教文组织的会议。在日内瓦，他结识了美国记者巴尔顿，两人一起探讨了许多关系到人类命运的重大问题，他们成了好朋友。尤拉回到国内后，又来到乌拉尔，并与舒拉结婚了。
