This A&E Biography recalls the earlier Richard Schickel biography of Stanywyck, Fire and Desire, with some of the same movie clips used. However there are a few new details that occasionally make it interesting.
We see Barbara's first husband Frank Fay in a short they made together in 1932, where he appears very fey, and which alludes to the rumors that she was a beard. We see Barbara's 1981 Hononary Oscar speech, and rare footage from movies like Ladies of Leisure, and Annie Oakley, as well as clips and trailers from her milestone films.
We hear anecdotes about how Barbara helped people establish themselves in Hollywood eg William Holden, Aaron Spelling, Nolan Miller, and also Barbara's own voice talking about her life. The best anecdote concerns Barbara's reaction to the director John Farrow being rude to a bit player on the set of California.

Danny Haley's bookie operation is shut down, so he and his pals need money; when Danny meets Arthur Winant, a sucker from out of town, he decoys him into a series of poker games where eventually Winant loses $5000 that isn't his...then hangs himself. But it seems Winant had a shadowy, protective elder brother who believes in personal revenge. And each of the card players in turn feels a faceless doom inexorably closing in. Dark streets and sexy torch-singer Fran lend ambience.

Recently visited the home of Edvard Greig's home in Norway and always remembered his "Peer Gynt Suite" from music appreciation in school, especially the "Morning" song. This is an outstanding 1941 film starring a very young Charlton Heston, (Peer Gynt) around the age of 15 or 17 years of age and a great gem of a film that I have never seen before. The entire story of Peer Gynt along with the musical score by Edvard Greig is portrayed with great acting by Charlton Heston and a great cast of outstanding actors. The character of Peer Gynt is nothing you would be proud of and he was a reckless heartless individual who treated all women very poorly and only in a sexual way. In other words, Peer Gynt was a love'em and leave'em type of person who only thought of himself and no one else. Peer Gynt travels the entire world seeking fortunes and lost causes and finally comes home to Norway and settles down. The film location for this film was in Northern Illinois and Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, and you have to read English Titles throughout the film. Enjoy.
