原作は山口瞳の第48回直木賞受賞作。原作では主人公は電機メーカーに勤める宣伝部長だが、映画では洋酒メーカーの宣伝部員（山口瞳が当時サントリー宣伝部に勤めていた）に置き換え、主人公が直木賞を受賞するまでを描いている。それまで男性アクションで定評があった岡本喜八が、この1作で戦中派の屈折した心理を見事に捉え、本格的に評価された。ストーリーは、洋酒メーカーの宣伝部員というしがないサラリーマンの“才能のないだらしない奴が一生懸命生きること“の大変さを、自分史や戦後史と重ね合わせながら描く。岡本の演出は、主人公と妻との若い頃のロマンスを、「残菊物語」にたとえて、下駄と靴だけの合成アニメーションで描いたり、父親の事業の盛衰を書き割りのセットやアニメーションで描いたりと自由奔放をきわめる。また主人公の背後にいる同僚をストップモーションにして、カメラの背後でもう一人の自分が画面内の自分が置かれた立場を分析してみせるシーンなど、ナレーションの使い方も秀逸。

平安時代中期[1]を舞台に、ほぼ同時期に朝廷に対する叛乱を起こした平将門・藤原純友の生き様を描いた。主人公の将門と、その従兄弟である平貞盛から愛されるものの、両者の戦いに巻き込まれて惨殺されてしまう薄幸の姫君・貴子を吉永小百合が演じた。『真田風雲録』で知られる劇作家・福田善之が脚本を執筆、ここでの将門は、まず民衆が存在して、公などはずっと後からやって来たものだ、などと檄を飛ばすなど（こうした台詞は原作にはない）、反乱の歴史的位置付けを自ら意識した主人公である。
将門の勇敢さと真面目ぶり、貞盛の世渡り上手と気の弱さ、田原藤太の冷静沈着振り、純友の豪胆さと陰謀家ぶり等、人物の造形もわかりやすく、日活の清純派として名が通っていた吉永の演じる貴子が強姦殺害されるシーンも印象的だった。また、傀儡や海賊、遊女、農民等々庶民階層の登場人物が活躍する点も注目される。
2013年現在、平安時代中期というこれまでで最も古い時代を扱った大河ドラマである[2]。原作は海音寺潮五郎の小説『平将門』『海と風と虹と』。歴代大河ドラマの中で全映像の現存が確認されている最古の作品でもある。このうち、本編の放送回の映像は長年現存しないと考えられていたが、2000年代半ばになって、全放送回の映像が収録された当時の2インチVTRが現存していることが確認された（総集編の映像の存在は早くから確認されておりVHSやDVDで商品化されていた）。発見された映像は、9ヶ月にも及ぶデジタルリマスター処理により修復された上で、全話収録の完全版DVDが2007年7月に発売されている。なお、全52回放送の作品で完全版DVDが発売されているのは本作のみであり、これは全作品で一般公開されている尺数としては最も長い。
初回放送時の最高視聴率は30.1%、平均視聴率は24.0%。

A village girl goes to Tokyo and becomes a hooker to support her ailing mother. While there she meets an unmarried teacher (at least he says he's unmarried) and falls in love. When she learns that he lied and is married to a woman whose child was fathered by another man, she is crushed. He returns to his wife. The woman becomes more distraught when she learns her uncle has misused the money she has sent. As the final straw, her mother dies, and the girl becomes sick.

After the Japanese defeat to the Russians, Kaji leads the last remaining men through Manchuria. Intent on returning to his dear wife and his old life, Kaji faces great odds in a variety of different harrowing circumstances as he and his fellow men sneak behind enemy lines.

Kaji is sent to the Japanese army labeled Red and is mistreated by the vets. Along his assignment, Kaji witnesses cruelties in the army and revolts against the abusive treatment against the recruit Obara. He also sees his friend Shinjô Ittôhei defecting to the Russian border, and he ends in the front to fight a lost battle against the Russian tanks division.

After handing in a report on the treatment of Chinese colonial labor, Kaji is offered the post of labor chief at a large mining operation in Manchuria, which also grants him exemption from military service. He accepts, and moves to Manchuria with his newly-wed wife Michiko, but when he tries to put his ideas of more humane treatment into practice, he finds himself at odds with scheming officials, cruel foremen, and the military police.
