When school teacher Harriet Winslow goes to Mexico to teach, she is kidnapped by Gen. Tomas Arroyo and his revolutionaries. An aging American, Ambrose "Old Gringo" Bierce also in Mexico, befriends Gen. Arroyo and meets Harriet. Bierce is a famous writer, who knowing that he is dying, wishes to keep his identity secret so he can determine his own fate. Though he likes Arroyo, Bierce tries to provoke the General's anger whenever possible in an attempt to get himself killed, thus avoiding suffering through his illness. Winslow is intrigued by both Bierce and Arroyo, and the men are in turn attracted to her. She becomes romantically involved with Arroyo. When Winslow learns of Bierce's true identity (a writer whose work she has loved and respected for years), she is singlemindedly determined to fulfill his dying wish.

The program includes her journeys to UNICEF's missions in Bangladesh, Somalia and Viet Nam and it includes interviews with Larry King and her longtime friend, Robert Wolders. With great warmth and kindness, this compassionate woman speaks of her triumphs and disappointments throughout her life. Ms. Hepburn also expresses her deep satisfaction with being able to provide her service as a UNICEF Ambassador.

Malnutrition remains the main cause of maternal and infant mortality and well over half of all pregnant women suffer from iron deficiency anemia. This program follows two traditional birth attendants as they try to persuade women to take iron folate supplements and visit hospitals, which is often prohibitively expensive. The program also visits Tanzania, where it is malaria that is blamed for the increase in anemia which, in some areas, affects 93 per cent of children under five.

Francis and Margaret Macomber go on safari in East Africa and hire professional big game hunter Robert Wilson to be their guide. The Macombers marriage is not a happy one and Francis for his part hopes the trip will bring them closer together. When it comes to hunting the animals, Francis isn't very steady and runs away like a frightened child when he's charged by a lion. His wife is deeply embarrassed and she takes every opportunity to denigrate him for his act of cowardice. She's also taken an immediate liking to Wilson, who stayed calm and cool throughout.
