一文不名的流浪歌手请巫婆（Georges Méliès 乔治•梅里爱 饰）帮自己算命，巫婆在镜中显现了歌手未来妻子的样子——一位被怪兽囚禁的美丽公主。歌手大喜过望，但他无力承担巫婆的高价费用，只得用一袋沙子冒充金沙蒙骗巫婆。愤怒的巫婆决意报复，走投无路的歌手还要应付路上的鬼魂和各种怪物，不堪其扰。关键时刻得到神灵的相助，冲进城堡救出公主。
正当两人喘息之时，巫婆找到歌手，意欲报复。千钧一发之刻，神灵再次出现，杀死巫婆和追赶公主的魔鬼。歌手和公主终于获救，从此幸福地生活在一起。

A man in a silk top hat stands in front of an empty aquarium. He pours water into his hat and goes fishing, hooking a small one. He bec omes a hobo and catches more and more fish from the hat. Then he starts pulling out rabbits. The backdrop becomes the sea, and a mermaid appears. She flirts and beguiles us. The mermaid becomes a woman who leaves the sea and joins the magician, who becomes Neptune.

At the royal court, a prince is presenting the princess whom he is pledged to marry when a witch suddenly appears. Though driven off, the witch soon returns, summons some of her servants, and carries off the princess.
