Mit einem kunstvollen Geflecht aus improvisierten Szenen, Archivschätzen, Interviews und Bachmanns eigenen Texten durchmisst der Film die zentralen Lebensphasen der Autorin – von der Kriegskindheit in Kärnten, dem Aufstieg zum Star der Gruppe 47 bis zu den letzten Tagen in Rom. Der Weg ist gezeichnet von ihren komplizierten Beziehungen zu Paul Celan, Hans Werner Henze und Max Frisch und einem unnachgiebigen Ringen um eine eigene, radikale Sprache zwischen öffentlichem Ruhm und existenziellen Krisen.
