In many ways, 'I Nuovi Mostri' is an extension of Dino Risi's film „I Mostri”. However, its episodes were shot in color whereas the original "Monsters" film was shot in black and white. Most episodes of this film are about human nature especially shortcomings of people which reveal a negative facet of their lives. There are also episodes where the spotlight is on revealing the hypocrisy present in modern society due to strange rules and regulations. For example: an episode features an injured man who cannot be admitted to any hospital as there is no more room in a general hospital, no medical service after 23:00 in an hospital run by nuns and only military personnel with proper identification papers can be given treatment in a military hospital. Italian film 'Viva Italia'! is also known as "I Nuovi Mostri". It is the tale of new Italian monsters who represent weaknesses present in an average Italian. These people have been called "monsters" as their personal interests are always on top of their minds. Excellent Argentinian Saslavsky started his career in Spain with this adaption of a story by Cocteau. Set in Tangier but shot in Spain, the plot concerns a woman (Felix) who loses her memory after killing her husband who was about to divorce her because of her affair with Maurizio (Gassman). The dazed murderess befriended by a young engineer (Brazzi) but her lover catches up with her and forces her to reveal where her rich husband's jewels were hidden. Since she put them in the coffin together with the corpse, the murder is discovered but Gassman becomes the main suspect and, in a desperate bid to escape, he is killed. The end sees the unfortunate adulteress sink into madness as she embraces the dead body of the only man she really loved. The plot is unraveled through numerous flashbacks and punctuated with dream sequences full of hallucinatory images of witches, clutching hands emerging from a grave, the black-clad widow being pursued by a dwarf in a brilliant white cemetery, and the symbolic black crown itself: the formation of ravens as they circle above a corpse. The movie was released in Italy as 'La corona nera'. Saslavsky made other films in Europe but none justified the reputation which had preceded him on his arrival from Argentina. In Caro papá, Dino Risi is telling the story of the decadent lifestyle, and dysfunctional family, of a wealthy businessman (played to perfection by Risi's favorite leading man, Vittorio Gassman). Risi paints his portrait against a backdrop of an Italy where the new permissiveness has run rampant, traditional socio-cultural values have been usurped by consumerism, and the streets have become an open battleground for politically extremist groups (the '70s were dubbed "The Years of Lead" due to the great number of terrorist acts, and politically motivated assassinations).
