当地时间9月7日，第76届威尼斯电影节闭幕，各大奖项揭开神秘面纱。金狮奖最佳影片颁给了华纳&DC制作的电影《小丑》，这是超级英雄电影首次登顶欧洲三大电影节，历史性的时刻。“小丑”这个角色虽然不是超级英雄，但是他衍生自超级英雄作品《蝙蝠侠》，所以也算是超级英雄电影的一脉。
之前在场刊中获得高分的电影《我控诉》拿下了评委会大奖，这是二等奖，仅次于金狮奖。影片的导演是罗曼·波兰斯基，影片改编自法国历史上的著名冤案“德莱弗斯案件”。1894年，法国犹太裔上尉阿尔弗雷德·德莱弗斯被错判为德国间谍，被判处叛国，引起了世界范围的反犹太运动浪潮。
最佳女主角奖杯由法国影片《世界的胜利》中的女主角阿丽亚娜·阿斯卡里德捧得，影片是一部寓言式电影，描绘了当今社会中的种种奇特现象。意大利影片《马丁·伊登》中的男演员卢卡·马里内利获得影帝奖杯，这部影片改编自杰克·伦敦的小说，讲述一名水手成为作家之后发生的悲剧故事。
华语片《继园台七号》获得最佳剧本奖，这也是主竞赛单元华语片的唯一奖项，获奖者是导演兼编剧杨凡。这是一部动画电影，影片描述在1967年的香港，一名大学生和一对母女三人错综复杂的感情。
