能够完美地唱出一个漂亮的“Hi”C（高音C），对于男高音歌唱家来说将有着非同寻常的特殊意义，因为在歌唱的音域中高音C早已超过了男高音正常发声的极限。尽管人类已经征服了这个禁区，但男高音歌唱家在演唱这个音时由口腔所发出的声音其实并不自然，它不像通常从歌唱状态中所发出的声音那样通透圆润，而更像是一种超乎自然的动物鸣叫的声音。被誉为是当代高音C之王的帕瓦洛蒂在谈到演唱高音C时的感觉就曾经说过：“达到那些吓人的高音是件令人生畏的事情，尤其是当歌唱中要在咏叹调的高音中结束某个小节时，我常会感到好像是暂时失去了知觉，那是一种本能和无法控制的感觉，待几秒钟过后才又仿佛回到了地面并完全恢复了对自己的控制。”但恰恰就是这样一种违反生理自然现象的声音，却给听众带来了极度的亢奋与激情。有人曾经把男高音歌唱家演唱高音C比喻作“斗牛般的残酷”似乎是不无道理，如果某晚歌唱家唱好了，会迎来长时间的欢呼与喝彩，而当某晚一旦唱破，等待他的便是致命的打击和毁灭，因此男高音歌唱家们便总对演唱高音C有一种如履薄冰和噤若寒蝉的感觉，也总把观众看做是一群“嗜血成性”的人。
由于高音C确实具有很强烈的刺激性，因而歌剧作曲家们在写作咏叹调时也就不遗余力。有些作曲家在创作时还能多少照顾到男高音的生理特点，合理地适度在咏叹调中使用高音C，但也有些作曲家却全然不顾及这些，为迎合听众的趣味而写出哗众取宠的篇章，多尼采蒂的歌剧《军中女郎》就是这方面的典范。在《军中女郎》的第一幕中有一段咏叹调《多么快乐的一天》被视为是男高音的禁区，它非常著名也非常难于演唱，因为在这段咏叹调中作曲家要让演唱者在2分钟内连续唱出9个强劲而又有力的高音C，难度之大就可想而知了。虽然多尼采蒂在1840年就写出了此剧，但是在歌剧表演史上却一直还少有男高音能够真正按照原谱的高音演唱过，即使偶尔演唱不是比原版标定的音高要低，就是高音被挤压而令听者难以忍受。直到了20世纪的60年代末，意大利的男高音歌唱家帕瓦洛蒂在改进了自己歌唱时的呼吸方法之后，也才第一次唱出了利用口腔共鸣和胸腔共鸣所喷射出的9个漂亮的高音C，至此也才算真正圆了100多年前作曲家多尼采蒂创作此剧的梦。
《军中女郎》如今在世界上演出甚少，究其原因不是剧本成功与否，而实在是少有能人敢于碰它，就连帕瓦洛蒂本人在40岁之后也不敢轻易问津此剧了，1995年底，帕瓦洛蒂在告别了该剧演出的22年之后，在美国的大都会歌剧院又重唱此剧，尽管他雄心不减当年，但由于年龄的原因，他却无法再唱出真正的高音C了，当晚的演出所有的高音C都被降低了一个全音以降B的音高唱出，由此可见岁月不留情。
所幸的是，英国的迪卡（DECCA）唱片公司在帕瓦洛蒂演唱此剧最辉煌的时刻于1968年为他录制了该剧的唱片，这套歌剧的咏叹调《多么快乐的一天》中那9个极具金属效果的高音C的精彩演唱，便也就此成为了帕瓦洛蒂的历史回声。说起来也挺有意思，迪卡唱片公司好像意识到这部歌剧的录音将是空前绝后的，所以在录音时便使出了浑身的解数，这版录音的音效即使在20世纪末的今天听来，欣赏者仍丝毫也不会想到是60年代的录音，因此不论从哪方面来讲，这部歌剧的录音都是音乐爱好者所不可或缺的收藏珍品。
