英国男星丹·史蒂文斯（Dan Stevens）将在新片《发明圣诞节的人》（The Man Who Invented Christmas）中饰演英国大作家查尔斯·狄更斯（Charles Dickens）。

The adventures of a gang of British workmen abroad. Combines black and white humour with moments of drama, poignancy and drunkenness. In series 1, the lads head to Germany seeking work, and are thrown together by virtue of shared nationality and a run-down wooden hut. The story follows the lads' relationships with women, Germans and each other, and their attempts at passing the time away from home, saving money and ordering food in a German curry house. The series ends with new employment legislation forcing some of the Brits having to choose between the UK and their new-found pleasures abroad. Two years later the gang are reunited for a second series, in which they travel to Wolverhampton to rebuild both the "magnificent seven" and Barry's home for his impending marriage. A further offer of work sees the lads head to a Derbyshire stately home in need of refurbishment. Here they fall foul of an irritable pub landlord, suspicious locals, a less than enlightened employer and the Inland Revenue. Finally, they are packed off to Spain as illegal workers for Tyneside villain Ally Fraser, and they fall under the unwelcome spotlight of tabloid publicity. Excellent movie - the only sad thing is that it's taken me so long to see it. Quite different from Gregory's Girl: it's probably not quite as charming but I think it's equally quirky and has a better storyline. Great acting as well, while managing to maintain that same freshness that we saw in Gregory's Girl.

The rag-tag group of street kids known as the Irregulars first appeared in the Sherlock Holmes novel A Study in Scarlet in 1887. This time, the Irregulars find themselves having to solve the mysterious disappearance of two of their own gang, while Holmes himself is accused of murder and put under house arrest. Only by the combination of all their skills can they hope to free Holmes and the kidnap victims, solve the murders and prevent an audacious heist.

First broadcast on the UK’s Channel 4 in March 1988 this was episode 10 (of 11) of the series The Modern World, Ten Great Writers.
It mixes documentary and interview with a part dramatisation of The Trial starring the still relatively unknown Tim Roth (he is fourth in the credits listing on Amazon). The voiceover is by the ever so serious but still rather good Melvyn Bragg and there are comments from the even more serious George Steiner who at one point makes the salient comment that Kafka is the only writer (or person?) ever to be identified by just an initial.
The picture quality is not great but given the nature of the piece and its rarity that is not a great drawback. Please add to the Franz Kafka Collection.
