獨立音樂圈出身的「不露臉」唱作人 Sia 是許多天王天后背後的創作寫手，即便比起幕前工作更喜於幕後生活，《1000 Forms of Fear》卻讓她開始受到主流樂壇的期待，希望她發行更多唱作專輯。受《1000 Forms of Fear》成果的鼓舞，《This Is Acting》於焉誕生，但這張專輯可算是「遺珠精選」，因收錄其中的大多歌曲都是 Sia 為眾多歌后包含：Adele、Beyonce、Christina、Rihanna、Shakira⋯⋯量身定制的，但最終卻未被採納。Sia 不願自己的心血就此沈寂，於是將歌曲集結發行，專輯名稱呼應著他為別人寫歌時的心理活動——角色扮演。聆聽這張專輯的有趣之處是，一首歌，你能一邊體驗 Sia 以濃厚嗓音演出的版本，一邊想像若將歌曲交到原先預設的演唱人手中會變成什麼模樣，比如〈Cheap Thrills〉原本應由 Rihanna 來唱、〈Bird Set Free〉是 Adele 的歌、〈Move Your Body〉屬於 Shakira。畢竟當初這些歌曲是抱著希望被收錄且成為主打的心情所寫，《This Is Acting》幾乎是張首首皆為主打、份量十足的專輯，充分展現 Sia 驚人的創作能量與多變的歌唱演繹。
