圣诞节前一天下午，老李把家里人都叫到他房里，逐个地或激怒、或教训、或讽刺、或羞辱了一番，让他们一个个灰溜溜地离开他的房间了。到了晚上，突然传来了老李的惨叫声，大家从不同的地方冲到其卧室门口。把门撞开进去后，出现大家面前的是一个血淋淋的暴力谋杀现场……
本地警监哈罗德苏格登承办此案，他要求苏格兰场介入。波洛找来在家过圣诞节的杰普协助他。结果让人大吃一惊……
