Mary Jo Walker was married for the first time at age 17, and has since gone through three more husbands and numerous boyfriends. Everytime a relationship fails, the free-spirited Mary Jo takes to the road with her foul-mouthed, 12-year-old daughter, Ava, in search of a new home, new love and a new life. Leaving yet another abusive relationship behind her, Mary Jo finally heads for the picture-perfect suburbs of Starlight Beach, near San Diego. Mary Jo lands a position at job security company, and Ava enrolls in school where she makes friends easily. Ava hopes that she and her mother can actually live by themselves, without the destructive presence of another ill-chosen boyfriend. They carved spectacular temple-tombs into its soaring cliffs, raised a monumental Great Temple at its heart, and devised an ingenious system that channeled water to vineyards, bathhouses, fountains, and pools. But following a catastrophic earthquake and a slump in its desert trade routes, Petra's unique culture faded and was lost to most of the world for nearly a thousand years. Now, in a daring experiment, an archaeologist and sculptors team up to carve an iconic temple-tomb to find out how the ancient people of Petra built their city of stone. Meanwhile, scientists using remote sensors and hydraulic flumes uncover the vast city and its sophisticated water system. The race is on to discover how these nomads created this oasis of culture in one of the harshest climates on Earth.

What Did You Expect? brings us back to the kitchen of the Gabriel family, with the country now in the midst of the general election for President. In the course of one evening in the house they grew up in, history (both theirs and our country's), money, politics, family, art and culture are chopped up and mixed together, while a meal is made around the kitchen table.

To the rhythm of peeling, chopping and mixing, HUNGRY places us in the center of the Gabriel’s kitchen. The family discusses their lives and disappointments, and the world at large and nearby. As they struggle against the fear of being left behind, the family attempts to find resilience in the face of loss.
