“Oyuki, the [Virgin] is based on Kawaguchi Matsutaro’s adaptation of Maupassant’s “Boule de Suif” [“Lump of Fat,” also the inspiration for Ford’s Stagecoach]. To this story Mizoguchi added some of his own elements. Maupassant’s original work, set during the Franco-Prussian War, is the story of a group of people who try to flee the battleground in a horsedrawn carriage. The bourgeois use the expression “lump of fat” to refer sarcastically to the prostitute who is riding along with them. When they are caught by the enemy, they offer to send her to the commander as a human sacrifice. This done, when they leave the battlefield the next day, all they do is censure her and call her vulgar.
The scene shifts to the Seinan war in Kyushu. At one stage, government forces are seen trying to control the carriage. As a new element to the original story the film shows these forces being defeated in battle. The commander flees and hides in the home of the female protagonist, a saké server.

北九州の一隅、呼子港の遠洋漁業組合長、神谷太郎衛は、組合の赤字の原因が、持船第一肥前丸と第二肥前丸の船長、唐澤源六と石黒軍造の不正にあるとにらんで、二人を馘にした。折よく戦時中船舶兵としてこの土地にいた魚住省吾が訪ねて来て後任船長を世話する約束をした。省吾の紹介の新船長矢吹毅と渡の兄弟の指揮で久しぶりに第一、第二肥前丸は出航、大漁であったが市価の暴落で組合の頽勢を挽回することは出来なかった。その上唐澤と石黒は色々な妨害をしかけて来た。更に太郎衛の持船が減船令にひっかかり、彼はそのため陳情に上京、幸い願いはきかれたが病床に倒れた。おどろいて駆けつけた姉娘美衛は、かえってこのために永い間の省吾との恋が実を結び結婚を許されることになった。一方呼子港でも唐澤等の悪事がばれ、一味は警察隊に捕えられた。その時、町へ流れて来ていた踊子みどりは、ひそかに恋していた毅の身代りになって兇弾に倒れた。第一、第二肥前丸が日進水産へ引渡しのため呼子港を出て行く日、毅と渡は甲板に立って見送る太郎衛に手を振っていた。毅は省吾と結婚した美衛よりもいまは自分のために死んだみどりの姿を胸に、渡は妹娘美輪から贈られたロザリオをその手に持って……。

武勇を以って徳川側近を護った旗本も、平隱な治世が続くようになってから、冷遇され、その憤懣が色々な形で現われ、水野十郎左衛門を組頭とする白柄組の横暴などもその一つであった。中村あやめ一座の山村座での芝居の邪魔だてをしたとき、町奴幡随院長兵衛が取りなして事なきを得たが、それ以来白柄組は幡随院一家を眼の敵とするようになった。その上、川崎詣りの帰途難儀を救い、食客とした白井權八が吉原で全盛の小紫花魁を白柄組と争い、彼等を敗退させたことが、水野の長兵衛へのにくしみに油をそそいだ。水野は腰元おきぬを寵愛していたが、他に縁談があり、色々と心の迷いに悶々としていた折柄、おきぬが家宝の南蛮絵皿をこわしたことでカッとなり、これを切り捨ててしまった。おきぬの兄魚屋宗五郎は水野の屋敷へどなり込んだが、放り出され、長兵衛へ事の次第を訴えた。長兵衛はいたずらに事を構えるのをきらってこれを静かにしりぞけた。權八は長兵衛のそんな態度にあきたらず、中村あやめに長兵衛の御押しがあるからと偽っておきぬの事を芝居に仕組んで上演させ、旗本の横暴に対する世論をあふったが、そのためあやめは拉致され、水野の屋敷に檻禁された。あやめを引渡すと水野から申入れがあり、子分たちの引とめるのも構わず長兵衛は単身十郎左衛門の屋敷へのり込み、腹を割っての試合にお互いに了解し合うところがあった。しかし長兵衛がすすめられて入浴中、血気にはやった白柄組の一党に押しかけられ、今はこれをそ止すべくもないと悟った十郎左衛門が風呂場の長兵衛を刺したのだった。...

A coming-of-age story portrayed as the loss of all youthful illusions. Sixteen-year-old Yoichi dreams of becoming a sailor. His parents are fishmongers, and Yoichi lives together with them and his four siblings in cramped living conditions. His beloved younger sister is given to a wealthy, childless uncle; his best friend moves away; the girl he fell in love with from afar is with someone else: little by little, Yoichi loses all the people that are important to him. His counterpart is his older sister, who defends her own interests regardless of the consequences. Her determination to better herself, her willingness to do anything to escape poverty, is emblematic of Japanese post-war society. Yoichi, on the other hand, has only the binoculars left to him by an uncle to help him dream about another world, far away from his family. The film’s melancholy tone depicts Yoichi’s fate as inescapable: “Man’s happiness or sadness is fixed before birth”, he declares at some point. By the end, the conflict between obligation and fulfilling your dreams has given way to quiet resignation.
