故事发生在英国19世纪的维多利亚时期。小主人公莎拉（秀兰·邓波儿 Shirley Temple饰）出生在贵族家庭中，但就在她刚出生的时候母亲就去世了。父亲克鲁上尉（理查德·格林尼 Richard Greene饰）因为要前往南非作战而把莎拉送到一所女子贵族学校寄读。当得知莎拉的贵族身份后，校长把她当做公主一般对待。可就在莎拉生日的当天，前线传来父亲阵亡失踪的消息。从此莎拉的境遇就发生了天壤之别，校长赶她出原来漂亮的房间，并把她当做低贱的小佣人使唤。但是坚强的莎拉并没有放弃希望，她一方面依旧在帮助着别人，一方面到处寻找着“阵亡”的父亲，她坚信父亲是不会离他而去的。终于，奇迹发生了……
本片改编自世界著名儿童文学作家 F·H·伯内特夫人的经典名作《小公主》。
