这是“地下丝绒”的第一张专辑，也是摇滚乐历史上的一张划时代的经典之作。从专辑的名称上面可以清 楚地看到，这张专辑的诞生与西方现代艺术史上的伟大人物安迪·沃霍尔是密切相关的。这张“地下丝绒”的处女专辑就是由安迪·沃霍尔担任制作人的，而且专辑的名称也署上了他的大名。
在这张专辑里面，主唱卢·里德以他那干涩、沙哑的犹如破碎的玻璃一样的嗓音将1960年代美国青年对于现实的迷茫、反叛的态度表达得淋漓尽致，同时也对当时的社会现实作出了深刻的揭露。如在《我正在等待那个男人》这首歌里面，讲述的就是一个关于进行非法的海洛因交易的故事，把吸毒作为歌曲的主题，这在他们之前的乐队里面是非常罕见的，因此可以看出他们在音乐表达题材上面的大胆。而《星期天的早晨》这首歌则讲述了一个偏执狂在理想与现实之中挣扎的现实，他就像那个可怜的西西弗斯一样奔波在希望与绝望之间，这可以说是当时青年内心生活的真实写照。在《穿裘皮的维纳斯》这首歌里面，则表达了一个更为离经叛道的主题，那就是“性倒错”，他们以超越道德观的态度表达了自己对于“同性恋”这个当时还是一个禁忌的话题的看法。可见，他们在自己的音乐里面充分的体现了“自由”的精神，而这正是摇滚最为重要的精神财富。
在专辑之中担任了两首歌曲的主唱的女歌手尼柯，曾经主演过安迪·沃霍尔制作的几部电影，由于他的介绍，才成为了“地下丝绒”的一员。尼柯那种冷漠、飘忽，充满着厌世的没落气息的声音深刻地影响了后来无数的女歌手。

While Nico was the member of the Velvet Underground who had had the least experience in music prior to joining the group (while she had recorded a pop single in England, she'd never been a member of a working band before Andy Warhol introduced her to the Velvets), she was also the one who strayed farthest from traditional rock & roll after her brief tenure with the band, and by the time she recorded Desertshore, her work had little (if anything) to do with traditional Western pop. John Cale, who produced and arranged Desertshore, once described the music as having more to do with 20th century classical music than anything else, and while that may be going a bit far to make a point, even compared to the avant-rock frenzy of the Velvet Underground's early material, Desertshore is challenging stuff. Nico's dour Teutonic monotone is a compelling but hardly welcoming vocal presence, and the songs, centered around the steady drone of her harmonium, are often grim meditations on fate that are crafted and performed with inarguable skill and intelligence, but are also a bit samey, and the album's downbeat tone gets to be rough sledding by the end of side two. Cale's arrangements are superb throughout, and "My Only Child," "Afraid," and "The Falconer" are quite beautiful in their own ascetic way, but like the bulk of Nico's repertoire, Desertshore is an album practically designed to polarize its listeners; you'll either embrace it's darkness or give up on it before the end of side one. Then again, given the thoroughly uncompromising nature of her career as a musician, that's probably just what Nico had in mind.

1972年，脱离Velvet Underground的Lou Reed和另两位更早脱团的前团员John Cale跟Nico在巴黎重聚，面对一千位幸运的听众（和场外两千位挤不进去的歌迷），办了一场不插电演唱会，Lou Reed弹木吉他，JohnCale拉小提琴、弹钢琴，Nico则偶尔弹一架风琴。除了VU时代的歌曲，他们也唱了一些新写的作品。这场珍贵无比的演出实况，三十多年来一直以地下私酿录音(bootleg)的方式流传，在VU迷的心目中，是未发表作品的经典之作。到了2003年，这场实况终於有了正式版，不过是由一家不算有名的欧洲独立厂牌发行，只在欧洲贩售，让美国乐迷急得跳脚。

这张专辑的简介很少，一开始发Nico录音室专辑时候就留意到这张专辑里有很多那6张专辑里没有的歌，不过这些曲目大部分都重复出现在她另一张专辑Fata Morgana里，而那张专辑应该就是Nico生前最后一次演唱会的现场专辑，之后我会放它上来的说。
很喜欢Nico的说，最近一直在听她的歌，就顺便搜集一些她其他的专辑，其实她名义上30多张专辑，曲目大多是不断重复的，而且大部分是现场版本，我想如果要听她的这些专辑，先找到这些录音室专辑里没有的作品会比较好，呵呵。
Chelsea Girl之后Nico再也没有重复过那张专辑的民谣风格，而是一直坚持做一些比较有意境的，用特殊的乐器演奏出来的音乐，并不断重复着这样的探索，其中最好的代表自然是1970年的Desertshore，搭配到电影《内心的伤痕》里再合适不过，之后由于她身体和精神状况的低落，她的音乐也随之更沉闷起来，最后一张Camera Obscura发行后两年她便因脑出血在西班牙伊比沙岛与世长辞了。她去世前后一些现场或Rare Tracks专辑陆续在不同的厂牌出版，像Do Or Die（我唯一有的她的专辑，内页有John Cale写给她儿子Ari的信），Heroine，Behind The Iron Curtain等等，不过我一直认为最主要的仍然是她6张录音室专辑。
言归正转，Hanging Gardens，翻译成“空中花园”应该可以的吧，绝对不是空灵，幻想的感觉，依旧是低沉，阴暗和晦涩的Nico，Vegas这支曲子在我之前发的Drama Of Exile那个包里有，其实原本并不收录在那张专辑里，我比较喜欢The Line，也就是Saeta这个歌（似乎那个包里也有这首）。喜欢Nico的朋友肯定会喜欢Hanging Gardens，不喜欢有点沉闷音乐的朋友，建议还是听Chelsea那张比较好。

In 2002, Universal released a two-disc "Deluxe Edition" set containing both stereo and mono mixes of the entire album, along with five songs taken from Nico's Chelsea Girl ("Little Sister", "Winter Song", "It Was a Pleasure Then", "Chelsea Girls", and "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams", all these tracks have been written or co-written by members of the Velvet Underground) and single versions of "All Tomorrow's Parties", "I'll Be Your Mirror", "Sunday Morning", and "Femme Fatale". One critic wrote that the set was "somewhat disappointing in that it fails to offer any previously unreleased material",[21] but many agree that the inclusion of the mono version makes it a must-have for long-time fans.[citation needed] A studio demo of the unreleased track "Miss Joanie Lee" had been planned for inclusion on the set, but a dispute over royalties between the band and Universal canceled these plans. This contractual dispute apparently also led to the cancellation of further installments of the band's official Bootleg Series. A limited edition release of the set featured a reproduction of the original cover's peelable banana sticker.[21] In April 2010, Universal re-released the second disc of the "Deluxe Edition" as a single CD "Rarities Edition".

A CD release for one of Nico's last ever concerts, recorded in Tokyo on April 11th 1986. Famed for her involvement in the Velvet Underground & being one of Jim Morrison's lovers, Nico was discovered by Andy Warhol & appeared in the film 'Chelsea Girls' before being asked by him to perform with the Velvet Underground. The 70's resulted in a period of change for Nico & she emerged in the 80's to play over 1000 concerts within a seven year period.
