Michael is the younger son of a middle-class family, a strong-willed and free-thinking fellow, who is off in some distant country fighting for a revolutionary cause. Everyone in the family writes to him, describing the events of their lives, as they drift into a kind of conventionality which would perhaps have horrified them earlier. Only Michael's girlfriend Mara (Mariangela Melato), the mother of his child, retains her independence, even though it is through the help of Michael's increasingly conventional friends and family that she survives.

Elena lives on a Tuscan farm, separated from her ineffectual husband Leonardo, who is more concerned with his mistress Lolli than his wife or two daughters, Franca and Malvina. This collection of female figures inhabiting a world virtually without men is completed by Elena's sister Claudia and Elena's housekeeper Fosca. The only male in the house is a senile old uncle who spends most of his time knitting. This unusual stable female environment is suddenly shaken by several crises.

On New Year's Eve, an insecure, struggling actress (Anna Magnani) has nothing to do. When a colleague invites her to a New Year's party, she jumps at the opportunity. Accidentally she runs into an old acting acquaintance (Toto), who is helping a professional pickpocket (Ben Gazzara) steal from people during the hustle-bustle of New Year's Eve festivities. During the course of the evening, they have numerous crazy, humorous adventures all over Rome at different parties, restaurants, and even the Trevi fountain. Magnani's character (Tortorella) falls for Gazzara's character (Lello) without knowing what he's up to, while Toto tries to placate them both. Written by Miriam Kramer

Set in the weeks just prior to Christmas, the story focuses on the Yuletide preparations made by five different families. The humor derives from the communication gap between the elder family members and their bewildering offspring. The powerhouse cast is headed by Vittorio de Sica and Marcello Mastrioanni.

Based on 'Il fu Mattia Pascal', one of Pirandello's many stories concerning the transitory nature of the intangibles "truth" and "identity". Mattia Pascal is a downtrodden average man, treated like trash by his fiancée, scorned by his associates, and cheated out of his inheritance by contemptuous relatives. The dispirited Pascal heads to Monte Carlo, accruing a fortune and also assuming the identity of a less fortunate gambler who killed himself. The "new" Pascal is treated with a dignity and respect that overwhelms him--and nearly kills him.

In many ways, 'I Nuovi Mostri' is an extension of Dino Risi's film „I Mostri”. However, its episodes were shot in color whereas the original "Monsters" film was shot in black and white. Most episodes of this film are about human nature especially shortcomings of people which reveal a negative facet of their lives. There are also episodes where the spotlight is on revealing the hypocrisy present in modern society due to strange rules and regulations. For example: an episode features an injured man who cannot be admitted to any hospital as there is no more room in a general hospital, no medical service after 23:00 in an hospital run by nuns and only military personnel with proper identification papers can be given treatment in a military hospital. Italian film 'Viva Italia'! is also known as "I Nuovi Mostri". It is the tale of new Italian monsters who represent weaknesses present in an average Italian. These people have been called "monsters" as their personal interests are always on top of their minds. These are the people who do not hesitate a bit in order to ensure their happiness at the cost of their beloved ones. An excellent film for all those cinema admirers who wish to learn more about Italian way of living.
