该剧描述了巨人之眼之城的王阿伽门农带领联军出征特洛伊，然而军队在奥利斯受阻，请示当地狩猎女神之后，先知表示应当活人献祭，且献祭者就应该是阿伽门农之女，伊菲革涅亚。
