《星战》讲述科技与我们现实生活的科技发展，由 C3PO 和 R2D2 主持，内容包括机械人的发展，太空漫游和武器发展等等。
星战属於 Space Opera 类科幻，著重的是戏剧效果，所以在星战外壳之下，我们看到的还是共和国、议会、帝国、武士等等古典元素，但相对来说，机械人、穿梭机、雷射炮这些科幻完素，则只是背景和特技。
通常而言，科幻会有两大分类：硬科幻 (Hardcore SF) 和软科幻 (Softcore SF) 。硬科幻，讲求的是科学的準确性，在故事中提起会飞的车，便会真的从现在的科学来考证一下这些会飞车的可能性，就算是不可能，也会在故事中创作出的另一种延伸现实的科学理论来支持。所以硬科幻的背景细节通常都可堪细味，与我们现在生活中的科学有微妙的关联。亦因为如此，写硬科幻是相当困难的，因为作者需要做大量的资料搜集和考证，去创造故事的科幻背景。
相对来说，软科幻就比较对於科学求证就比较宽鬆，甚至没有，主要以内容故事为主。例如最常见的「时间旅行」穚段，很多时都会被略去要达成时间旅行的可能性，如在《多啦 A 梦》裏打开抽屉裏面就有时光机了，没有原理解释。因此，软科幻比较易写，只要构想好背景世界和其科技发展，便即可开工写故事了。
事实上，故事太硬科幻的话，整个故事会太艰涩难明；太软的话又会空中楼阁，与现实脱轨。事实上，我自己觉得很多好看的科幻，都其实是「软硬适中」，在一定的科学理论支持下，建造起一个个未来世界，探究在新科技下人们将会变成什么样子，讲裏面的人和事。既然是「科幻」二字，当然是有科也有幻才好看，两者比重平衡。
科幻作品一向对於人类未来作出不同的猜想，所以是预言家。不过，也有很多科学发展，其实是取灵感自科幻作品，所以我们会看到根据 R2D2 外形而创做的机械人，看到以两脚行走的机械人。科学家与科幻作家，有著微妙的互动关係，某程度上就像是自我实现的预言。虽然《星战》裏的科学，实际上没有太大的考究，比较「软」，而且也不是新颖构思，但他使人沉醉於伟大的太空场景，让人想实现裏面各种科技，影响著某些发展的方向。
