Everyone knows it or thinks that they know it - but they really do not: the classic film The Battleship Potemkin (1925) by Sergei Eisenstein. Shortly after its completion, the film and original negatives were sold to Germany in 1926 and mutilated by censorship authorities. The film was then sent back to the Soviet Union and revised several times.
On the Trail of Battleship Potemkin presents the different versions, the German restoration from 2005, and statements from head restorer Enno Patalas, Eisenstein expert Naum Kleiman, and Helmut Imig, who adapted the original Edmund Meisel score. A fascinating, film historical detective story.

It's a 60-minutes documentary about different types, techniques and notions of montage used by Eisenstein. The movie is very imaginative, features a lot of interesting video-techniques to visualize different concepts of montage.
This is not Eisenstein's film, but a series of montage lessons by V. Chubisov using Eisenstein's films for examples...

The great Russian film director Sergei Eisenstein, whose Potemkin, Alexander Nevsky, and Ivan the Terrible stand as masterpieces of world cinema, is the subject of this eccentric and puzzling production. Though based on memoirs Eisenstein wrote before his death in 1948, most of this film is barely a documentary at all, but rather a composite of images, many of which are fascinating and arresting. Eisenstein himself was known for startling and memorable images (perhaps the most famous of which is the shot of the baby carriage rolling down the steps in Potemkin), so memorializing him with clips from his own films interspersed with readings from his memoirs seems somewhat appropriate. But the voice-over in Russian (with English subtitles) is quite sparse, and at times the images onscreen, which include clips from Buster Keaton films and Hollywood musicals from the 1930s, are utterly mystifying.. --Robert J. An autobiographical film, in English throughout, telling the story of film director Sergei Eisenstein (1898-1948) from his childhood in Riga, Latvia to receiving the 'Stalin Prize' in Moscow. Based on his own writings, the film uses actual film clips of Eisenstein at various points of his life as well as photographs, illustrations and archival film of a variety of locations around the world. Eisenstein's talent as a satirical cartoonist and later an artist is particularly highlighted with many photographs of his work. Films discussed include "Strike", "Battleship Potemkin", "Oktober", "The old and the new", "Alexander Nevsky" and "Ivan the terrible". There is a detailed account of Eisenstein's world tour during which time he met and worked with other leading film-makers, writers and personalities including Einstein, James Joyce, D. W. Griffith and Walt Disney. Includes anecdote on his visit to High Table at Trinity College, Cambridge and its inspiration for a scene in 'Ivan the terrible'.

As a teenager, Eisenstein signed his drawings with 'Sir Gay'. Roguish essayist Rappaport sees clear signs of his sexual preferences throughout the Russian’s film oeuvre. Numerous asides illustrate how Hollywood productions likewise frequently played with nods and winks and typical motifs from gay culture.
