Philippe Barrière, psychologue dans un hôpital psychiatrique de la région toulonnaise, reçoit Sonia Mornant en consultation. Dès lors sa vie va se trouver bouleversée par la rencontre de cette fille dénonçant une machination dont elle est la propre instigatrice. Daniel Barrière s'intéresse au cas d'une jeune malade, Sonia Mornant, internée à la demande de sa famille et de la police pour errement mental. La jeune fille accuse ses parents adoptifs d'avoir fait disparaître un visiteur. Elle a vu entrer dans leur maison un homme, mais ne l'a jamais vu ressortir. Daniel Barrière essaye de suivre une ligne de vérité dans le récit assez incohérent de Sonia. Au début il ne fait que vérifier certains détails jusqu'à ce qu'il reçoive non seulement des menaces mais encore quelques coups de manche de pioche.
