The show is based around making audience members' wishes come true, featuring ordinary people living out their fantasies for real.
There are no rules as to who can appear on the show, it features ordinary members of the public nominated by friends who think they have a hidden talent or other special reason. Every guest has the help of Barrowman and other celebrity guests.
The studio audience are also involved in the show, as John surprises unsuspecting members of the public, making their wishes come true on the night even if they hadn't signed up for the show.
It contains at its heart elements of classic 1980s entertainment shows, such as Surprise, Surprise, Jim'll Fix It, and Beadle's About.

Broadway: Beyond the Golden Age is the sequel to the feature film documentary Broadway: The Golden Age, which documented American theater in the 30s, 40s and 50s. This second installment of director Rick McKay's Broadway film trilogy continues the story from the legendary Broadway season of 1959 (Gypsy, Raisin in the Sun, Once Upon a Mattress, etc.) through the tumultuous 60s (Hair, Oh, Calcutta, etc.), the revolutionary 70s (Sondheim, A Chorus Line, Chicago, etc.), up to the opening night of David Merrick and Gower Champion's 42nd Street in 1980. Once again, McKay tells the story with in depth, candid, personal interviews with over 100 newly filmed, legendary stars, while incorporating never before seen footage of the original productions, as well as home movies and photos from the stars' own personal collections, bringing to life a lost era in American history. Many of the stars of the film went on to become household names from their subsequent fame in film and television, and talk of the differences in the mediums and how the theater gave them the foundation for their success in front of the camera.

第一幕

參議員烈特在大選前四十八小時被發現死在情婦的床上，葬禮瀰漫著一種詭異的氣氛。其兄天生殘疾的格拉咸和妻子維奧麗把不該發出的消息給厭下來了，但烈特之子卡爾卻是個有自己哲學的浪蕩子。("One, Two, Three")維奧麗說服格拉咸輔助卡爾成為政壇新星，("Embrace Tomorrow")而被送去從軍的卡爾吸食大麻時烈特突然出現向兒子推銷當政客的好處。("Control")在接受一連串訓練以及娶了個名門望族女士之後，("America's Son")卡爾憑雄辯滔滔漸漸成為政壇後起之秀。("I See the Future")

不過他始終不想從政，於出外玩樂時卻跟黑幫頭子的女友天娜給搭上了。("Lonely is a Two-Way Street")第二天他宿醉未醒，渾身脂粉氣讓格拉咸大為不悅，而他在宣講時失誤居然被其急智扭轉情況，使格拉咸大為尷尬。("Simple Words")另一邊廂天娜發現自己愛上了卡爾，("Alleluia")而格拉咸因之前的事希望退出，但卡爾卻看穿了格拉咸其實是男同性戀的祕密，並自動獻身讓他留下。格拉咸為了讓卡爾和天娜的事不被揭發，唯有向黑幫老大安東尼提出合作，他深明此舉一出，他們便已經是背水一戰了。("Dangerous Games")

第二幕

格拉咸跟卡爾回顧自己跟烈特的感情，指二人兄弟之情非常的好。("Two Guys at Havard")然而因為自己殘障，為了烈特能成功他便把其聰明才智收起來充當幕後智囊，而維奧麗亦是靠利用他來跟烈特結婚的。("First Came Mercy")此時卡爾之妻誕下一子，讓之名聲更盛之餘毒癮亦更深，天娜愛莫能助。("Bend the Spoon/ One, Two, Three")終於維奧麗跟老相好彼得出手把卡爾關進房中戒毒，("Cleaning House")格拉咸趁機著天娜離開卡爾。卡爾逃出來後再次借毒品和性愛逼格拉咸就範，("Upper Hand")而他又一次屈服。

維奧麗正在酗酒("Spin")，卻被格拉咸打斷並要脅自己要走。同時格拉咸又揭開烈特和維奧麗之間根本算不上恩愛，二人都常各自出外偷腥。("The Ballad of Bobby "Carcker" Barrel")卡爾搞那麼久才開始正視自己的問題，("Child's Play")終於他向所有人公開自己的祕密，一下子成了媒體的寵兒　－　以及黑幫的敵人。結果他們逼使天娜約卡爾出來，("Mistress of Deception")二人卻被黑幫人士亂槍射死。在卡爾的葬禮上，令眾人眼前一亮的是他的兒子小卡爾，二人的臉相簡直太相似了......("Finale")

在太平洋范围内，一批探测员乘坐轮船打算去海洋深处探测，正在他们进行任务对接时，船上人员监测到深海附近有不明障碍物靠近，他们紧急联系入海人员，但最终发生了惨剧，海底监测人员被鲨鱼所食。六个月后，在墨西哥靠近太平洋的海岸港口附近，鲨鱼又出现了，人们并不知情。一个爱好潜水的年轻人在海水中发现了一枚鲨鱼的牙齿。这枚牙齿引起了年轻人的兴趣，他开始寻找相关的资料。而鲨鱼真的会再次出现在墨西哥的港口吗？人们的生命将会受到威胁吗？
