事情缘起于傻仔丁常旺，旺本是豪门富商包庆丰九代单传的独子，旺母本是包老爷的妾侍，因原配夫人妒忌，诬捏旺母与家朴有染，包老爷盛怒之下，视有了身孕的旺母是怀有孽种，把旺母逐出家门，旺母流落异乡并诞下旺，两母子过了二十几年相依为命的艰苦生活。而包老爷二十多年来仍无子嗣，直至原配夫人患病去迦后，包老爷有感膝下无子承继家产，遂派亲侄包大业往寻旺两母子，知不寻获，包老爷宁愿临老续娶求子，也不会把家业传给亲侄。大业一直欲承继包老爷家产，如今希望幻灭，遂起歪心，在寻到旺两母子时，暗中加害之，旺母死，旺被打伤后脑滚下山崖。业以为旺已死，即找来一个身份卑贱的孤儿，顶包假冒包老爷之子，改名为包继宗。大业并编造故事，令继宗亦以为自己就是流落在外的包家少爷。
