Having first approached Scott Walker about appearing on their 2009 album Monoliths & Dimensions, Sunn O))) initiated a conversation that would instead lead to something even more enticing, in the form of the epic Soused.

With a career spanning more than five decades, Scott Walker’s cult status remains as significant as ever before. Experiencing mega-stardom as part of The Walker Brothers before carving out a career as a solo crooner who released a quartet of peerless self-titled LPs that painted rich vignettes of life in the late 60s, Scott went through what felt like a massive U-turn by recording a collection of masterfully challenging albums: Climate Of Hunter (1984), Tilt (1996), The Drift (2006) and Bish Bosch (2013). While there’s some truth to this artistic arc, the actual picture is a lot more complex, with his knack for introducing the disturbingly counter-intuitive and the uncanny into his songwriting dating back to the likes of 'The Plague' (1967) and ‘It’s Raining Today’ (1969).

Centred around the core duo of Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson, Sunn O))) have been at the heart of underground and experimental metal since they began in Los Angeles back in 1998, broadening in range to increasingly encompass avant-garde and jazz dynamics to their dark music. Anderson is involved in running Southern Lord (Sunn O)))’s usual label home, whilst O’Malley is involved in a remarkable web of projects as a musician, designer, and label head of Ideologic Organ.
They appear alongside extended Sunn O))) member Tos Nieuwenhuizen on this recording.
Recorded in London in early 2014 and produced by Walker and long-time ally Peter Walsh with the assistance of musical director Mark Warman, Soused is a 5-track, 50-minute collaborative record that cements the status of both act’s wide-reaching and otherworldly renown.

After much speculation, 4AD can confirm that Scott Walker will release Bish Bosch this December, his first studio album since 2006’s The Drift.
Scott began writing new material around 2009 - whilst also scoring the ROH 2’s Duet For One Voice ballet - recording it sporadically over the following three years. The end result is Bish Bosch, a tauter but more colourful experience than The Drift, with greater emphasis on processed, abrasive guitars, digital keyboards and thick silences.
Aided again by co-producer Peter Walsh and joined by a regular core of musicians, Ian Thomas (drums), Hugh Burns (guitar), James Stevenson (guitar), Alasdair Malloy (percussion) and John Giblin (bass). Musical director Mark Warman also played a prominent role, both as conductor and keyboardist, while guests include trumpeter Guy Barker and pedal steel guitarist BJ Cole, who worked on three of Scott’s mid-seventies LPs. For tracks 'SDSS1416+13B (Zercon, A Flagpole Sitter)', ‘Dimple’ and ‘Corps de Blah’, Scott drafted in an orchestra, recording them in The Hall at Air Studios last November. For the cover art, Scott worked closely with painter Ben Farquharson and designer Philip Laslett.

To follow Scott Walker's career is like traveling on a parallel universe where things look similar but are very different than things back home. "Nite Flights" is the last album from The Walker Brothers. I think they realize that this road is coming to a dead end, and decided to make an album that will please themselves, but also their need to explore other sounds, yet, keep The Walkers mystique in order. In a sense, it's three solo albums in one package, with four songs by Scott, four by John Walker, and two by their 'drummer' Gary. The big surprise is how good the Gary cuts are on this album. "Death of Romance" and "Den Haague" have a groove, but Scott through the production gives it another dimension sonically. I don't know the working relationship between the "brothers," but I feel that Gary was more in tune with Scott's experimentation and sense of adventure. The John Walker cuts are OK, but the one song of his that stands out is "Rhythm of Vision" just due to the chorus hook.
The masterpieces here are of course from Scott, and it is a blueprint of the type of music he will do in the future. Although it seems he dropped out of releasing music for five years until his next recording "Climate of Hunter." A lot of listeners separate the early Scott from the current Scott, but in my opinion, I think he has been consistent ever since his early work with The Walker Brothers. He moves slow, but his thinking and art making of sounds has been consistent. "Nite Flights" is the first 'obvious' step into making new music that is emotionally drained, dark humor, and contained in a space. I often think of Walker's work as a piece of sonic sculpture, and here he takes the first step to make that happen.
The way the album is set up is that you have four songs by Scott, two by Gary, and then the remaining four by John. So physically there are two EPs by Scott and John, and a single by Gary. The album opens up with the Scott Walker's set, and it is a collaboration in the sense that John sings along with Scott, but beyond that, the density of the recording/sounds is very much like a solo Scott album. I feel that these four songs were very much influenced by David Bowie's "Low," in that they are pop songs, but filtered through a relentless rhythm that gives it a Claustrophobic feel with the urgent voices of Scott and John. Probably the most well-known song here is the title cut, "Nite Flights" which Bowie covered on his album "Black Tie White Noise. A beautiful song that seems to belong to both Bowie and Scott. "The Electrician" is a combination of Scott's new direction, but also his later film composing. The string section is lovely, but it does go against the darkness of the main melody, which causes tension. And Scott Walker is the genius of music tension.

It drew critical raves for its minimalist, trancelike ambience that showed him keeping abreast of cutting edge 80's rock trends.
