影片改编自波兰小说家、散文家、诗人、翻译家和文学编辑雅罗斯瓦夫·伊瓦什凯维奇（Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz；1894年2月20日~1980年3月2日）发表于1961年的同名小说。
在风景如画的玛罗娜村，风光旖旎的湖畔有一所学校和一家结核病康复院。女教师奥拉Ola（巴巴拉·霍拉维扬卡饰）与一名病人雅内克 Janek（安杰伊·安特科维亚克饰）有了恋情。这件事后来在村里闹得沸沸扬扬。然而爱情冲昏了她的头脑，不再年轻的奥拉根本不考虑感染重病的雅内克的身体和言语的欺骗性，以自己极大的奉献贪婪地抓住每一个与他共享幸福的时刻，最终被学校开除。而雅内克的健康又在冬季开始恶化，终于在一个大吐血的晚上，雅内克向她坦白，他有妻子还有一个只有几岁的儿子......
