Thierry Mugler chose the catwalk as the venue for his 20th anniversary party at the Cirque d’Hiver. That it was OTT was given: Mugler was a showman who went on to design costumes for the movies and, yes, the circus. The “scalpel-cut and aerodynamic details” that Vogue once credited him with were evident in the collection’s tailoring, but the show was memorable more for its performance by James Brown; its cameos by the likes of Tippi Hedren, Patty Hearst, and Veruschka; and its rather liberal use of fetishistic latex. And we haven’t even gotten to the silvery cyborg getup, later famously photographed by Helmut Newton, that was revealed when a model shed her floor-length coat. A frightening and tantalizing image for the dawn of the Internet age, and a fitting end for this list of the nineties’ most unforgettable fashion shows.

The Boy In The Dress is the story of Dennis, a 12 year-old boy who lives in an ordinary house, in an ordinary street, in an ordinary town, but he feels different. His mum has gone off with a roofer and he lives with his dad (Steve Speirs) and brother. Everything is boring and grey. Dennis wants to escape to some sort of magical world, and discovers it in the most unexpected place - Raj's newsagent.
A chance view of Kate Moss on the cover of a fashion magazine introduces Dennis to a whole new world of colour and creativity. Thankfully he has an ally in Lisa, the coolest girl in school, who decides to teach him everything she knows about the world of fashion and clothes. Dennis is enthralled, and after a little persuasion from Lisa tries on a dress she has created. Soon they decide to try and pass Dennis off as ‘Denise’, Lisa's French pen pal. But can a boy wear a dress, and what will his Headmaster Mr Hawthorn think if he finds out - let alone Dennis’s dad, his best friend Darvesh and his school football team-mates?

Frost crafts a fizzy, upbeat ode to the now 92-year-old Quant, exploring her importance as a female business pioneer, her influence on gender politics through women’s dress and her impact on a decade of fashion. Drawing on an exceptional pop cultural archive and including a glittering array of contributors, from Edward Enninful to Kate Moss, Vivienne Westwood and Dave Davies, the film explores Quant’s significant legacy and the ways in which her work signposted the future; asking questions about fast fashion and mass production, and her contribution to pop culture’s obsession with marketing people as brands. A film powered by female ingenuity, both in front of and behind the camera, along with 1960s pop hits and a vibrant dayglow archive, Quant brims with London vim. We’re over the moon to present its World Premiere at LFF.

Called an idol for a generation, supermodel Kate Moss is examined as both style trendsetter and high-profile fashion brand in this revealing and intimate documentary. Since her beginning as a gawky, bandy-legged South London teen with an innate sense of scruffy glamour, and her discovery at age 14 by a model agency executive, Moss has craftily maneuvered through the media circus for nearly two decades with stamina and career longevity. Reflecting on the Moss phenomenon are filmmaker Mike Figgis, designer Vivienne Westwood and artist Chuck Close.

Due to stream on Disney+, the series will take inspiration from the Vogue podcast series of the same name, which was broadcast back in 2020. Winding the clock back to 1990, it dissected the era’s most enduring trends and charted the rise of its biggest stars. Among the endlessly fascinating topics examined were the birth of the supermodel, the prevalence of grunge, the irresistible glamour of Tom Ford’s Gucci, the explosive collision of hip hop and fashion, the rapidly changing nature of red-carpet style, and the legacies of London-based renegades like John Galliano and Alexander McQueen.
