A mini-sequel to German director Alexander Kluge's 1968 Golden Lion winner Artists Under the Big Top: Perplexed, The Indomitable Leni Peickert continues the slice-of-life tale of down-on-her-luck Peickert (Hannelore Hoger), who in that earlier film (many will remember) made the mistake of investing in a "socially relevant" circus that failed to draw crowds - and quickly found herself in financial hot water. In this particular outing, she begins by working on television, then gets fired for smuggling an explicit, uncensored film - and promptly returns to the circus, while remaining footloose and unsettled. Intriguingly, this film does not represent a sequel to Big Top per se, but actually works in material that Kluge originally intended for that earlier outing.

Teachers through Change is a suite of four short portraits of teachers whose lives have been profoundly affected by historical events. Each laconic life story is told through a series of old photographs separated by titles. Some are progressive educators victimized by the Nazis; one is a vicious opportunist who benefited from the fascist takeover. Their lives are implicitly contrasted with those of ordinary, bureaucratized teachers today, whom we see in cinema-verite footage taken at a teachers' convention, school meetings, and so on. The interruptions in the biographies figure the larger interruptions history makes in the lives of human beings (this is also a theme of a book of stories, Lebensldufe [Curricula Vitae], Kluge published in 1962). The dispersed narrative focus and the formal discontinuities resist the homogenizing narrative strategies of the culture in- dustry and presage the method of "antagonistic realism" Kluge later formulates in discursive terms.

This little patchwork of car-racing archive footage tries to show the symbolic meaning of a race regarding the mechanization of the world. Technic is more and more about to control the humans, and not backwards. This truly "not new" assumptions remember to the "Frankfurter Schule" with their critics on mechanization. Some of you maybe remember Jürgen Habermas "colonializaton of the "Lebenswelt"!

This movie was intense and funny in its analysis of a restless gifted person. She was an abortionist. The very bizarre close examination of the work she did includes a jaw dropping opening that makes it appear that the film was shot during the events as they actually happened. She is keeping her family together but then loses interest and becomes a rabble rouser for workers in a chemistry plant. She helps them keep their jobs when the threat of moving the plant to Portugal comes to light, but of course, gets her husband fired when they identify her as the agitator.
In the end she opens a stand at the plant selling sausages wrapped in union pamphlets... Very funny, even the abortion clinic segment where she converts it into a veterinary clinic after she coaxes a dog to break through the police tape for her. Great basic film-making!

Another mammoth-project with the "chronologist of our time" Alexander Kluge. With 12 hours film, Gelpke and Kluge try to get a better understanding of the new human, which arouse from the internet, artificial intelligence.... Like his last projects, this films are complilations of many fragments, shorts, fiction-interviews, opera, theatre etc.
