Search and Destroy
director: David Salle actor: Dennis Hopper / Christopher Walken
other title: 搜寻并毁灭 / 追而歼之
This is a gem that is lost amongst the crap that came out in the mid nineties American cinema. The first time I saw this film I thought that it was bizarre, yet in some odd way compelling. I have since seen it seven or eight more times and it gets better each time. The humor is dark and unconventional, and the dialog is odd in that it is difficult to determine whether or not its meant to be funny or is simply poor writing, I still have not figured that out which is probably one of the reasons I love this film.
The cast is of course outstanding, which is why I first rented this film knowing nothing about it. It must have had a very short theater shelf life. Dennis Hopper, Ethan Hawke and produced by Martin Scorcese, how could you go wrong? But the truly outstanding performance, and the majority of the quotable lines are spoken by Christopher Walken. His characters name is Kim Ulander, classic, and walken does what walken does best in this role, he plays a psychopath.

Jonas Mekas filme Martin Scorsese sur le tournage des Infiltrés.
« J’ai rencontré Martin Scorsese quand il était encore un étudiant en cinéma à l’université de New York. Il venait à mes projections. Mais notre amitié a commencé quand il a fait son premier long métrage, Who’s That Knocking at My Door ? »

James Toback:" The film idea was generated by conversations Alec and I have had over a long period of time and we decided we'd go to Cannes and shoot a record of our quest to find money to make a movie, which in effect is not a movie we're definitely making, but rather one we will make in the future if we raise the money for it here. This film is about that process, documenting the progress and the potential success or failure of the two of us in a picaresque attempt to obtain the financing of a movie we have a general idea about making."

Cinema Futures
director: Michael Palm actor: Margaret Bodde / David Bordwell

The "digital revolution" reached the cinema late and was chiefly styled as a technological advancement. Today, in an era where analog celluloid strips are disappearing, and given the diversity of digital moving picture formats, there is much more at stake: Are the world's film archives on the brink of a dark age? Are we facing the massive loss of collective audiovisual memory? Is film dying, or just changing?

Alfred Hitchcock often referred to his style of film making as "pure cinema" - using camera movement, editing, music and sound to tell stories that would be impossible in any other medium. Even as early as the 1920s, while his contemporaries were simply filming stage plays, Hitchcock was creating a cinematic language that has endured and influenced every filmmaker who came after him. This in-depth documentary allows directors such as William Friedkin, Martin Scorsese and Guillermo del Toro to examine the power and mastery of Hitchcock's cinematic style, breaking down such signature sequences as the bell tower scene in Vertigo, the attic attack in The Birds and the shower scene in Psycho.

The Master's Touch: Hitchcock's Signature Style
other title: 大师之触:希区柯克的独特风格 / 《西北偏北》花絮
Great documentary features interviews with Martin Scorsese, Curtis Hanson, Francis Lawrence, William Friedkin, Guillermo Del Toro, John Carpenter and others as they discuss the films and style of the Master of Suspense. Various topics are discussed including how Hitchcock always had you cheer for the killer, how the good guy on conflicts, objects of desire, how sound was used and the importance of objects that might not mean anything. By the time this documentary was released in 2009 there had already been countless films that took a look at Hitchcock and his style so you might go into this thing wondering what else there is for us to know but what makes this film so special is how those involved really do look at things you might not have noticed before. This was produced by Warner so the film's covered are the ones they owned like STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, SUSPICION, I CONFESS, THE WRONG MAN, MR. AND MRS. SMITH and DIAL M FOR MURDER among others. These are films that most fans have seen multiple times and it's still interesting at how the filmmakers really breakdown certain scenes and make you notice things that you might not have. There's no doubt that after watching this you'll want to go back and watch all of the films again just so you can view them in a new way, which is something that happens with most Hitchcock classics. Scorsese offers up some interesting views on THE WRONG MAN and the discussion of Hitchcock's humor is spot on. Fans of the great director are really going to enjoy this 57-minute film and we even get a couple interviews with Hitchcock himself that were recorded back in the 70s.
