1885年5月17日，83岁高龄的雨果患重病的消息在巴黎传开了，从这天起，每天的报纸上都有他的病情通报。寓所前，总聚集着一批又一批关切探询的人群，不断有社会名流在门前下车献上自已的名片。
5月22日，雨果逝世，上议院与众议院获悉，立即休会，宣布全国性的哀悼。两院一致通过政府的提案，决定为雨果举行隆重的国葬。
5月50日，雨果的遗体停放在凯旋门下，四周呈星形放射的大道上，路灯与火炬日夜照射，不尽的人流从凯旋门下通过，瞻仰雨果的遗容。
6月1日，葬礼举行，鸣礼炮21响。仪仗队由l 2名法国青年诗人组成，200万人群跟随在灵车的后面。
