寒冷的冬夜，一对善良勤恳的夫妻经营着一家面馆。某日，一位满脸疲惫的母亲带着两个孩子光顾了这家面馆。然而，三人却只点了一碗荞麦面，很显然，经济上的拮据困扰着这个破碎的家庭，但夫妻两人还是热情地接待了他们。
第二年，这个特殊的家庭再度来到了面馆，母亲告诉老板娘，她的丈夫去世了，去世前留下了大笔的债务，需要靠她来偿还。之后的每一年，母亲都在用她的出现告诉老板和老板娘，她依然坚强着活着。

生活在海滨城市的人见舞（岛带宽子 饰）和阿裕（原田健二 饰）是青梅竹马的好友，随着年龄增长，小舞渐渐喜欢对方，却迟迟不敢说出口。两人确定关系的那天，小舞车祸而死。其身为科学家的父亲人见俊彦（渡濑恒彦 饰）运用自己研发的“意识恢复软件”使女儿在计算机上复活。人见博士曾供职的Digital Ware公司老板为了实现征服世界的野心，派出部下黑泽（竹中直人 饰）抢夺该软件，人见博士销毁软件，也因此被杀。黑泽等遂将目标放在复活后的小舞身上。阿裕和朋友们为保护小舞拼尽全力。

1958年2月，观测船派飞机接走了南极昭和基地的第一批考察队员们，临走时潮田等人把15只桦太犬拴好，留给即将前来接替的第二批队员。不料，由于天气极度恶劣，第二批队员无法飞赴基地，原计划被迫取消，所有队员将一起回国。潮田和越智强烈要求接回那些桦太犬，但终究无法办到。潮田归国后无法摆脱内心的歉疚，辞去了北海道大学讲师之职，一一走访提供桦太犬的人家前去谢罪。在越智的推动下，稚内市内修铸起了一座铜像纪念这些牺牲的桦太犬。同时，在冰天雪地的南极，有8条桦太犬挣脱了束缚外出寻找食物，在严酷的环境中，它们陆续死去。一年后科学考察队再次来到了南极。回到基地的潮田和越智发现了幸存的两条桦太犬……
