Menthe - la bienheureuse is a Danish short film of the Danish director Lars von Trier from 1979. The film is based on the sadomasochistic novel by Dominique Aury , Story of O , and tells the story of a voluntary female subjugation . The production is produced in black and white, the second by the famous artist.

A young, mentally ill man, a visual artist in crisis Victor Marse (Lars von Trier) meets two nurses (Eliza and her girlfriend) during his stay in a sanatorium. These nurses are obvious lesbians. Victor lives with Eliza and her son. He imagines another woman when he is roaming at a coast. He pretends committing a suicide but Eliza does not react to it. Every moment, he stays in front of a blank canvas and thinks. Meanwhile he dresses into Nazi clothes or into women dresses, then he leaves to go to the cinema, and abuses and probably kills a small girl. His masochistic affair with Eliza lasts; he is close to shooting her with a gun but instead she takes out a whip. Victor goes along the streets then he lies naked in front of the canvas on which he has left his bloody fingerprints. After this he drives a funeral car to his work - he is employed in a garden where orchids are grown. Eliza is now the past and in the end, Victor might be dead as someone drives a cross into the ground.

To decide where we were going with the sound and if we could use…a realistic sound to this very non-realistic image. If you have so few props you have to decide which ones are going to be there and why. There are a lot of decisions when you minimize things.”

“Manderlay, which is the sequel, is an incarnate stepping stone to what was going to become a… kind of culmination […] So we had, definitely, clear ideas about what “George Washington” could be about […] there were notes about “George Washington”. He’d had an idea of what he was going to do; I can’t remember it now. Clearly I’ve subconsciously repressed it.”
“I said, “Well, why don’t we”––and I don’t think anybody’s ever heard this, and he probably can’t remember, knowing him now––but I said, “Why don’t we build the set in a boat, on a boat? On a massive, stable, safe container and shoot going across the Atlantic? And you come; you can sail. Shoot it as a set, like a studio––have a studio set exactly like we do on Dogville and Manderlay––and shoot it. So we create everything we want with the actors and do it in a compact space. It takes 17 days to get across the Atlantic. We never took much more than that to shoot the others.”
