Comparing Policy Networks [图书] 豆瓣
作者: David Knoke / Franz Urban Pappi 出版社: Cambridge University Press 1996 - 6
The United States, Germany, and Japan - the world's three most powerful and successful free market societies - differ strikingly in how their governments relate to their economies. Comparing Policy Networks reports the results of collaborative research by three teams investigating the social organization and policymaking processes of national labor policy domains in the United States, Germany, and Japan during the 1980s. The researchers gathered information about policy goals, communication patterns, and political support connections from 350 key national organizations, including labor unions, business associations, public interest groups, government agencies, and political parties. These networks reveal similar conflict divisions between business and labor interests, but also distinctive patterns within each nation. Unique combinations of informal policy-making networks and the national political institutions may in part explain the differences in power structures and legislative decisions.
Social Democracy in the Global Periphery [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Richard Sandbrook / Marc Edelman 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2007 - 3
Social Democracy in the Global Periphery focuses on social-democratic regimes in the developing world that have, to varying degrees, reconciled the needs of achieving growth through globalized markets with extensions of political, social, and economic rights. The authors show that opportunities exist to achieve significant social progress, despite a global economic order that favors core industrial countries. Their findings derive from a comparative analysis of four exemplary cases: Kerala (India), Costa Rica, Mauritius, and Chile (since 1990). Though unusual, the social and political conditions from which these developing-world social democracies arose are not unique; indeed, pragmatic and proactive social-democratic movements helped create these favorable conditions. The four exemplars have preserved or even improved their social achievements since neoliberalism emerged hegemonic in the 1980s. This demonstrates that certain social-democratic policies and practices – guided by a democratic developmental state – can enhance a national economy's global competitiveness.
The Weakness of Civil Society in Post-Communist Europe [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Marc Morjé Howard 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2003 - 3
Over a decade has passed since the collapse of communism, yet post-communist citizens are still far less likely to join voluntary organizations than people from other countries. Why do post-communist citizens mistrust public organizations? What explains this pattern of weak civil society? And what does this mean for democracy in the region? This engaging study addresses these questions with a provocative argument about the enduring impact of the communist experience on its countries and citizens. Howard argues that the experience of mandatory participation in state-controlled organizations and vibrant private networks during the communist period, combined with the disappointment with post-communist developments, have left most citizens with a lasting aversion to public activities. Howard analyzes the findings from over 30 democratic countries on the World Values Survey and also presents extensive and original evidence from his own research, focused on Eastern Germany and Russia.

Affect and Literature [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Alex Houen (editor) 出版社: Cambridge University Press
This book considers how 'affect', the experience of feeling or emotion, has developed as a critical concept within literary studies in different periods and through a range of approaches. Stretching from the classical to the contemporary, the first section of the book, 'Origins', considers the importance of particular areas of philosophy, theory, and criticism that have been important for conceptualizing affect and its relation to literature. Includes ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, eighteenth-century aesthetics, Marxist theory, psychoanalysis, queer theory, and postcolonial theory. The chapters of the second section, 'Developments', correspond to those of the previous section and build on their insights through readings of particular texts. The final 'Applications' section is focused on contemporary and future lines of enquiry, and revolves around a particular set of concerns: media and communications, capitalism, and an environment of affective relations that extend to ecology, social crisis, and war.
Suicide Century [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Andrew Bennett 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2017
Suicide Century investigates suicide as a prominent theme in twentieth-century and contemporary literature. Andrew Bennett argues that with the waning of religious and legal prohibitions on suicide in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the increasing influence of medical and sociological accounts of its causes and significance in the twentieth century, literature responds to the act and idea as an increasingly normalised but incessantly baffling phenomenon. Discussing works by a number of major authors from the long twentieth century, the book explores the way that suicide makes and unmakes subjects, assumes and disrupts meaning, induces and resists empathy, and insists on and makes inconceivable our understanding of ourselves and of others.

Affect and American Literature in the Age of Neoliberalism [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Rachel Greenwald Smith 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2015
Rachel Greenwald Smith's Affect and American Literature in the Age of Neoliberalism examines the relationship between American literature and politics in the twentieth- and twenty-first centuries. Smith contends that the representation of emotions in contemporary fiction emphasizes the personal lives of characters at a time when there is an unprecedented, and often damaging, focus on the individual in American life. Through readings of works by Paul Auster, Karen Tei Yamashita, Ben Marcus, Lydia Millet, and others who stage experiments in the relationship between feeling and form, Smith argues for the centrality of a counter-tradition in contemporary literature concerned with impersonal feelings: feelings that challenge the neoliberal notion that emotions are the property of the self.
Exploring Affect [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Silvan S. Tomkins 出版社: Cambridge University Press 1995 - 2
Silvan Tomkins was one of the most influential theorists on emotion and emotional expression. Over a period of 40 - some years - until his death in 1991 - he developed a set of original, important ideas about the nature of affect and its relationship to cognition and personality. Tomkins dealt with fundamental questions in a fresh and provocative way, establishing affect as a separate, biological system, and providing compelling data on discrete affect expressions. Several years before his death, Professor Tomkins agreed to bring his papers (unpublished and published) together into Exploring Affect for Cambridge Studies in Emotion and Social Interaction. He worked with Paul Ekman and Klaus Scherer to develop a structure for the book that would synthesize his theory of emotion. Unfortunately, he died before he was able to complete the process. Virginia Demos, who knew Professor Tomkins well, took on the enormous task of compiling the papers and writing connective material for the book. This volume of Tomkins selected writings on affect brings together his works of four decades and makes them available at a more receptive time in the field. It is a treasure trove of provocative, insightful and relevant ideas.
Privacy as Trust [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Ari Ezra Waldman 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2018 - 5
It seems like there is no such thing as privacy anymore. But the truth is that privacy is in danger only because we think about it in narrow, limited, and outdated ways. In this transformative work, Ari Ezra Waldman, leveraging the notion that we share information with others in contexts of trust, offers a roadmap for data privacy that will better protect our information in a digitized world. With case studies involving websites, online harassment, intellectual property, and social robots, Waldman shows how 'privacy as trust' can be applied in the most challenging real-world contexts to make privacy work for all of us. This book should be read by anyone concerned with reshaping the theory and practice of privacy in the modern world.
Review
'This book is a concise look at the philosophy of and theory behind privacy. Waldman ... blends philosophy, sociology, and legal theory to explore where Americans stand with privacy and how to shape privacy law going forward. Different perspectives and theories are introduced and explained without being overwhelming or too nuanced. Classical philosophers and modern privacy experts are cited side by side. This is a great text for a graduate seminar as it provides many conversation topics and viewpoints. A quarter of the book contains extensive endnotes and further sources for exploration.' J. M. Keller-Aschenbach, Choice
'In Privacy as Trust, Ari Ezra Waldman charts one of the most important modern accounts of privacy. This insightful, thorough, and elegantly written book lays the foundation for a better digital world based upon trust in others. A must-read for anyone who cares about the way we talk about and make rules for privacy.' Woodrow Hartzog, Northeastern University, Boston
'There is, at present, a great deal of sophisticated sociological work on individual expectations of privacy, and a parallel literature by legal academics which explores the limits and possibilities of data protection policy. Ari Ezra Waldman's brings together these two literatures with a strikingly original synthesis of what social science should mean for law, and how legal disputes can inform the research agenda of sociologists, computer science researchers, and corporate privacy professionals, while also offering a vision for the future of data protection policy via deep engagement with case studies of quintessential privacy violations. This work should inform data governance globally, thanks both to its substantive recommendations, and its model method for addressing emerging privacy concerns. A profoundly important book.' Frank Pasquale, University of Maryland
'Privacy as Trust helps us escape zero-sum notions of privacy as all or nothing. And it grounds the often theoretical discussions about privacy's value in everyday examples, charting a path forward for privacy as an integral component of our personal relationships. This book is a must read for anyone interested in saving privacy in the digital age.' Scott Skinner-Thompson, University of Colorado, Boulder
This book is perfect for scholars and students of law, sociology, policy, history, and other social sciences. But because it is written in an accessible way and uses real examples from everyday life, it is also attractive to anyone interested in privacy, from informed readers to activists.

The Sociology of Theodor Adorno [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Matthias Benzer 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2011 - 4
Theodor Adorno is a widely-studied figure, but most often with regard to his work on cultural theory, philosophy and aesthetics. The Sociology of Theodor Adorno provides the first thorough English-language account of Adorno's sociological thinking. Matthias Benzer reads Adorno's sociology through six major themes: the problem of conceptualising capitalist society; empirical research; theoretical analysis; social critique; the sociological text; and the question of the non-social. Benzer explains the methodological and theoretical ideas informing Adorno's reflections on sociology and illustrates Adorno's approach to examining social life, including astrology, sexual taboos and racial prejudice. Benzer clarifies Adorno's sociology in relation to his work in other disciplines and the inspiration his sociology took from social thinkers such as Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Kracauer and Benjamin. The book raises critical questions about the viability of Adorno's sociological mode of procedure and its potential contributions and challenges to current debates in social science.

American Literature and the Free Market, 1945-2000 [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Michael W. Clune 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2010 - 1
The years after World War Two have seen a widespread fascination with the free market. In this 2009 book, Michael W. Clune considers this fascination in postwar literature. In the fictional worlds created by works ranging from Frank O'Hara's poetry to nineties gangster rap, the market is transformed, offering an alternative form of life, distinct from both the social visions of the left and the individualist ethos of the right. These ideas also provide an unsettling example of how art takes on social power by offering an escape from society. American Literature and the Free Market presents a new perspective on a number of wide ranging works for readers of American post-war literature.
