Principia Mathematica 3 Volume Set [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Alfred North Whitehead / Bertrand Russell 出版社: Cambridge University Press 1927 - 1
Principia Mathematica was first published in 1910-13; this is the ninth impression of the second edition of 1925-7. The Principia has long been recognised as one of the intellectual landmarks of the century. It was the first book to show clearly the close relationship between mathematics and formal logic. Starting from a minimal number of axioms, Whitehead and Russell display the structure of both kinds of thought. No other book has had such an influence on the subsequent history of mathematical philosophy.
Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Miller, Jon 编 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2011 - 8
Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics is one of the most important ethical treatises ever written, and has had a profound influence on the subsequent development of ethics and moral psychology. This collection of newly-commissioned essays, written by both senior and younger scholars in the field, presents a thorough and close examination of the work. The essays address a broad range of issues including the compositional integrity of the Ethics, the nature of desire, the value of emotions, happiness, and the virtues. The result is a volume which will challenge and advance the scholarship on the Ethics, establishing new ways of viewing and appreciating the work for all scholars of Aristotle.
Realism for Realistic People [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Hasok Chang 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2022 - 11
In this innovative book, Hasok Chang constructs a philosophy of science for 'realistic people' interested in understanding and promoting the actual practices of inquiry in science and other knowledge-focused areas of life. Inspired by pragmatist philosophy, he reconceives the very notions of reality and truth on the basis of his concept of the 'operational coherence' of epistemic activities, and offers new pragmatist conceptions of truth and reality as operational ideals achievable in actual scientific practice. Rejecting the version of scientific realism that is concerned with claiming that our theories correspond to an ultimate reality, he proposes instead an 'activist realism': a commitment to do all that we can actually do to improve our knowledge of realities. His book will appeal to scholars and students in philosophy, science and the history of science, and all who are concerned about the place of science and empirical truth in society.
Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Mechanics: Collected Papers on Quantum Philosophy [图书] Goodreads
出版社: Cambridge University Press 2004 - 6
John Bell, FRS was one of the leading expositors and interpreters of modern quantum theory. He is particularly famous for his discovery of the crucial difference between the predictions of conventional quantum mechanics and the implications of local causality, a concept insisted on by Einstein. John Bell's work played a major role in the development of our current understanding of the profound nature of quantum concepts and of the fundamental limitations they impose on the applicability of the classical ideas of space, time and locality. This book includes all of John Bell's published and unpublished papers on the conceptual and philosophical problems of quantum mechanics, including two papers that appeared after the first edition was published. The book includes a short Preface written by the author for the first edition, and also an introduction by Alain Aspect that puts into context John Bell's enormous contribution to the quantum philosophy debate.
The Earlier Presocratics and the Pythagoreans (A History of Greek Philosophy, Vol. 1) [图书] 豆瓣
作者: W. K. C. Guthrie 出版社: Cambridge University Press 1979 - 2
All volumes of Professor Guthrie's great history of Greek philosophy have won their due acclaim. The most striking merits of Guthrie's work are his mastery of a tremendous range of ancient literature and modern scholarship, his fairness and balance of judgement and the lucidity and precision of his English prose. He has achieved clarity and comprehensiveness.
Ghost-Seers, Detectives, and Spiritualists [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Srdjan Smajić 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2013 - 11
This book is a study of the narrative techniques that developed for two very popular forms of fiction in the nineteenth century - ghost stories and detective stories - and the surprising similarities between them in the context of contemporary theories of vision and sight. Srdjan Smajić argues that to understand how writers represented ghost-seers and detectives, the views of contemporary scientists, philosophers, and spiritualists with which these writers engage have to be taken into account: these views raise questions such as whether seeing really is believing, how much of what we 'see' is actually only inferred, and whether there may be other (intuitive or spiritual) ways of seeing that enable us to perceive objects and beings inaccessible to the bodily senses. This book will make a real contribution to the understanding of Victorian science in culture, and of the ways in which literature draws on all kinds of knowledge.
The Chinese Communist Party [图书] 谷歌图书
作者: Timothy Cheek / Klaus Mühlhahn 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2021 - 05
Ten engaging personal histories introduce readers to what it was like to live in and with the most powerful political machine ever created: the Chinese Communist Party. Detailing the life of ten people who led or engaged with the Chinese Communist Party, one each for one of its ten decades of its existence, these essays reflect on the Party's relentless pursuit of power and extraordinary adaptability through the transformative decades since 1921. Demonstrating that the history of the Chinese Communist Party is not one story but many stories, readers learn about paths not taken, the role of chance, ideas and persons silenced, hopes both lost and fulfilled. This vivid mosaic of lives and voices draws together one hundred years of modern Chinese history - and illuminates possible paths for China's future.
Chinese Global Infrastructure [图书] 谷歌图书 豆瓣
作者: Austin Strange 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2023 - 12
Infrastructure is at the heart of China's presence in global development and is also central to larger debates about Chinese influence. This Element provides a comprehensive account of major Chinese government-financed infrastructure projects in the Global South since 1949. Using new datasets, it demonstrates that Chinese global infrastructure is distinct in terms of its historical tenacity and massive contemporary scope. But this does not imply that contemporary Chinese global infrastructure or the Belt and Road Initiative should be studied in a vacuum. Historical and comparative perspectives show that contemporary projects often emerge based on similar political logics to those that shaped infrastructure investment in earlier periods of Chinese history and other international contexts. The Element then examines how infrastructure projects have created both purposeful and unintended sources of influence by serving as valuable but risky political capital for host country governments as well as the Chinese government. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
Lucky Valley [图书] 谷歌图书
作者: Catherine Hall 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2024 - 02
Why does Edward Long's History of Jamaica matter? Written in 1774, Long's History, that most 'civilised' of documents, attempted to define White and Black as essentially different and unequal. Long deployed natural history and social theory, carefully mapping the island, and drawing on poetry and engravings, in his efforts to establish a clear and fixed racialized hierarchy. His White family sat at the heart of Jamaican planter society and the West India trade in sugar, which provided the economic bedrock of this eighteenth-century system of racial capitalism. Catherine Hall tells the story behind the History of a slave-owning family that prospered across generations together with the destruction of such possibilities for enslaved people. She unpicks the many contradictions in Long's thinking, exposing the insidious myths and stereotypes that have poisoned social relations over generations and allowed reconfigured forms of racial difference and racial capitalism to live on in contemporary societies.
History, Evolution and the Concept of Culture [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Sidney W. Mintz 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2009 - 7
Alexander Lesser, one of Franz Boas's finest students, and probably one of the best of his time in his research on the Plains Indians, is a brilliant but neglected figure in American anthropology. This representative selection of Lesser's work is designed to make the range of his writings accessible to a broad audience. His work is of particular interest to present-day readers for its advocacy of an historical-evolutionary perspective in anthropology. Such an approach, almost unique at the time Lesser was writing, has become increasingly widely appreciated since. His work is also of interest for the light it throws on the British 'functionalist' school, and the effects of their views on American anthropology.
What Is a Slave Society? [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Noel Lenski (ed.) / Catherine Cameron (ed.) 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2018 - 5
The practice of slavery has been common across a variety of cultures around the globe and throughout history. Despite the multiplicity of slavery's manifestations, many scholars have used a simple binary to categorize slave-holding groups as either 'genuine slave societies' or 'societies with slaves'. This dichotomy, as originally proposed by ancient historian Moses Finley, assumes that there were just five 'genuine slave societies' in all of human history: ancient Greece and Rome, and the colonial Caribbean, Brazil, and the American South. This book interrogates this bedrock of comparative slave studies and tests its worth. Assembling contributions from top specialists, it demonstrates that the catalogue of five must be expanded and that the model may need to be replaced with a more flexible system that emphasizes the notion of intensification. The issue is approached as a question, allowing for debate between the seventeen contributors about how best to conceptualize the comparative study of human bondage.
Keynes and the Cambridge Keynesians [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Luigi L. Pasinetti 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2009 - 1
What was the Keynesian revolution in economics? Why did it not succeed to the extent that Keynes and his close pupils had hoped for? Keynes and the Cambridge Keynesians addresses these and other questions by tracing the historical development of Keynesian economics. The book is split into three parts. Part I contains the author's Caffe Lectures on Keynes's 'unaccomplished revolution'. Part II is a series of biographical essays where the author, himself a witness and participant of the group on which he writes, presents the successful and unsuccessful endeavours of Keynes's most important pupils: Richard Kahn, Joan Robinson, Nicholas Kaldor, Pierro Sraffa and Richard Goodwin. Part III of the book looks to the future by developing a conceptual analytical framework that makes sense of Keynes's 'revolution in economics', discussing the many ways in which the Keynesian way of doing economics is incompatible with the neoclassical tradition.
Justice After Mao [图书] 谷歌图书 博客來
作者: Daniel Leese / Amanda Shuman 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2023 - 09
How can a dictatorship cope with the legacy of injustices and atrocities committed in its own name? This was one of the pressing questions the Chinese Communist Party leadership faced after the death of Mao Zedong in September 1976 and the end of the Cultural Revolution. This collection presents ground-breaking, original research to address the question of historical justice in the Party's attempt to survive politically despite rampant factionalism and widespread political persecution. The volume traces complex questions of property restitution, fostering reconciliation within local communities, and establishing new standards of truth. Contributions also investigate how various actors remember the period in the present. The post-Mao period provides a lens through which to view strategies of coping with a violent past under state socialism, highlighting how selectively applied approaches now associated with the concept of transitional justice may even serve to strengthen rather than subvert authoritarian rule.
Law and Political Economy in China [图书] 谷歌图书
作者: Tamar Groswald Ozery 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2023 - 06
Applying a novel theoretical approach, Tamar Groswald Ozery combines law and political economy to deconstruct the role of law in China's market development since 1978. The book examines how economic and administrative powers within China's Party-state system have been legally and politically configured throughout China's growth process. Using a vast range of primary sources, Ozery illuminates how the law acts as a mediating institution that translates and gives shape to the relations between politics and economics. Using the evolution of public firms and corporate governance as a case study, Ozery illustrates the complex relationships between law, politics, and economic development, and sheds new light on the possible varieties of growth-supporting governance institutions in firms. By studying China's distinct market experience through the lens of law and political economy, Ozery offers a significant contribution to development studies, comparative corporate governance, and interdisciplinary discussions about China as a growth model.

'Many people, not least in my profession of journalism, profess to love the English language while showing scant sign of really understanding its grammar. A Student's Introduction to English Grammar will be a revelation to them and all other interested general readers, as well as college students. It is a masterly and definitive treatment of the structure of modern Standard English, written with analytical rigour but always in an accessible style. Among the most informative and pleasurable aspects of the book is its explanation of where traditional treatments of the subject go wrong. In place of such hoary misconceptions such as that a noun is the 'name of a thing', or that an adjective is a 'describing word', Professors Huddleston, Pullum and Reynolds explain that grammar is an empirical subject that rests on evidence. Their book conveys the excitement of intellectual discovery, and will inoculate readers against many stubborn but mistaken popular notions about 'correct grammar'. As a professional writer, I strongly recommend it.' Oliver Kamm, leader writer and columnist for The Times of London
'This superb textbook distils the knowledge of three distinguished linguists who understand the nuances of the English sentence as well as anyone ever has. True, it gets technical. So don't try to read it in one weekend. Pace yourself and read it, say, over the course of two months. Soon you'll be regaling your friends with accounts of subject extraposition, pseudo-clefts and bare existentials. If you're not then the life of the party, then you're attending the wrong parties.' Bryan A. Garner, Chief Editor, Black's Law Dictionary
'Students often experience grammar phobia and fear the ire of purists. The authors have gone a long way to allaying these concerns in their accessible, yet authoritative, treatment of English grammar. I appreciated their position that Standard English is a dialect - and its prestige an historical accident - and their Usage Controversy Notes, which dispel many false usage claims. I only wish that such a book had been available when I was a student!' Diane Larsen-Freeman, University of Michigan
'This second edition continues the illuminating and comprehensive presentation of English grammar that we have come to expect. Students and instructors alike will benefit from the contemporary, non-formal approach of the text and the relevance and intelligibility of real examples and exercises. This is undoubtedly an essential text for all students of the English language who require a strong grounding in the discipline.' Sam D'Elia, University of Kent
'In their second edition of A Student's Introduction to English Grammar, Huddleston, Pullum and Reynolds remove the need to feel intimidated by grammatical analysis. Written in a conversational style and suited to students from a range of backgrounds, this textbook provides a clear and approachable introduction to the structure of English. An invaluable addition to undergraduate reading lists - grammar bullies beware!' Colleen Holt, La Trobe University
'Readable and engaging, this comprehensive and detailed textbook clarifies complex grammatical concepts for students. What sets this book apart is how it discusses 'normal' language as opposed to 'formal' language in its Usage Controversy Notes, where the reader will be relieved to learn that it's okay to split infinitives, use passives and refer to an individual with the pronoun 'they'.' Helene Seltzer Krauthamer, author of The Great Pronoun Shift: The Big Impact of Small Parts of Speech, University of the District of Columbia
'This grammar book is a very well rounded and comprehensive grammar of the English language. Because it is a perfect fit for beginning and more advanced university students it lends itself to both recapping the wide array of topics as well as learning about them. It's an invaluable book for English students.' Vivian Gramley, Bielefeld University
'A Students's Introduction to English Grammar is a remarkable read, both in its scope and attention to detail. The authors succeeded in producing a student-friendly reference book without simultaneously falling into a trap of oversimplifying the complex notions so inherent to English grammar. A feat of daring.' Zoran Simicevic, University of Vienna
'This text accomplishes what instructors need for undergraduate grammar courses with a linguistic focus: it makes both conceptual content and the process of linguistic reasoning accessible to students. The text introduces critical concepts - from constituency to complementation - and demonstrates step by step how these concepts are derived and applied in evidence-based linguistic reasoning. Because the text offers thorough coverage, a direct and pragmatic approach to usage controversies and an ample selection of exercises inviting students to practise and reason critically, it is a welcome option for instructors teaching in undergraduate English, education and linguistics programmes.' Miriam Moore, University of North Georgia
'Unbiased and consistently descriptive, this revised Introduction takes the student on an almost-informal discovery trip through word classes, phrases, clauses and more complex clause phenomena. With richly illustrated discussions and a wide range of topics covered, this is a textbook of English grammar and a grammar reference book in one - a book of English grammar for the modern times.' Jerzy Nykiel, University of Bergen
'This is a clear, carefully structured and comprehensive introduction to the complexities of English grammar. Its special gift, however, is the consistent way it links the elements and structures of sentences to their meaning. In doing so, the authors offer a text that is as much about the qualities of style as the mechanics of language.' Lawrence Byrne, Barry University
'A Student's Introduction to English Grammar begins and ends as every grammar textbook should: by reminding students that they already know most of the material within the book. By demystifying the study of grammar, Huddleston, Pullum and Reynolds teach students how to improve their innate understanding of the English language.' Jason Todd, Xavier University of Louisiana
'A Student's Introduction to English Grammar is a highly accessible textbook because the authors recognise that English grammar is both complex and at times subtle. By making this recognition, the authors have made the student's experience of analysing English central. For instance, theory is built from example sentences rather than being illustrated by them, additionally common misunderstandings and difficulties in analysis are not ignored, but highlighted and are attended with full discussion. The result is that students are led to understand English grammar from a modern linguistic perspective - leaving behind many misconceptions seen in more traditional grammars.' Peter Hurst, University of Melbourne
'I have been using the first edition for almost 15 years with my undergraduate and master's English grammar and syntax classes, and I look forward to working through the second edition with my students. The revised exercises and inclusion of additional tree structures should be quite useful. I particularly am excited to go over the new Chapter 8 on Adjuncts with them and appreciate how the book now better aligns with the structure of the Cambridge Grammar of the English Language. Most importantly, however, the grammatical analyses the book presents remain expertly reasoned. The keen attention to separating form and function represented in the book would benefit any student of the English language and is something that is sorely missing in traditional grammar approaches, and often even in much modern syntactic theorizing. This, combined with the breadth and depth of coverage of grammatical topics, makes it a must-have for both English language educators and professional linguists alike.
'A good grammar textbook provides readers with the what, how and why and strives to boost students' efficacy in understanding and application of grammar across different contexts. A Student's Introduction to English Grammar achieves these goals by providing learners with an active language-learning experience. Content, commentary and practice engage students in not only building the knowledge they need to understand grammar but also in facilitating an investigation into best practices in light of an ever-changing language.' Rachel Smydra, Oakland University
The Cambridge World History of Genocide [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Ben Kiernan / T. M. Lemos 出版社: Cambridge University Press 2023 - 6
Volume I offers an introductory survey of the phenomenon of genocide. The first five chapters examine its major recurring themes, while the further nineteen are specific case studies.
