When Asakawa holds Sadako's remains, she transcends her human form and becomes the ultimate archetypal mother for a new millennium. But new generations are defined by the generational trauma. EDIT: Just realized that Sadako (貞子) in Japanese consists of the characters for "chastity" and "child", which implies immaculate conception and lands more credence to my reading of the movie.
