Ported from a dead account Who's watching the watchers? One of the most unique concepts I've seen that fuses folklore with Lacanian psychoanalysis and Chalmers' philosophical zombie thought experiment. Also it's just so thematically packed that it deals with several relevant questions, such as our relationship with our parents and their presence or loss in our lives, and the struggle to define ourselves morally within these relationships or lack thereof. It's all presented with a lot of symbolism, mirrors featuring heavily, simultaneously going back to Lacan thematically, and representing the characters' attempts to break out of their own "self" which is also represented in their attempts to escape the forest that serves as the place that forces them into this torturous practice of self-reflection. The motifs from The Shining and La Haine also contextually enrich the film. But, as it progresses, it is able to lean more into Gothic influences aesthetically and finding melancholic beauty in the horrifying. In a way, this is also a perfect continuation of its themes, as any internal exploration hides horror and beauty within it. But even ignoring all the depth, the movie is just such an emotional ride with perfect performances and soundtrack, and the characters not only extremely relatable, but also so psychologically layered. And every line of dialogue is so meticulously written that it adds another puzzle piece to the mosaic. The ending brought me to tears. The "if we make it out of here, you can stay at my place" too.
