I'm not an advocate for 100% historical accuracy in films based on real events, but this film doesn't lie for the sake of artistic vision, it does so for other reasons. In fact, I feel there's not much of an artistic vision here at all. For its almost 3-hour runtime it's pretty shallow. It skips on a lot of very important events, yet adds some completely artificial ones, just to hold the script together. I'm not gonna get into specifics, but this film gets so much wrong about the characters, it comes off as offensive tbh. First of all, Eazy was never such an idiot, loser and a wuss. Dr. Dre was never a mr. good guy. In fact he was the worst of the team, if anything. I've heard and read so many stories about Dre, that make him look outright evil, and I hoped this film would provide some of Dre's reasoning for those actions, but it never even mentions them. Aside from all that, it's such a boring film. The pacing is all fucked, characterization is very weak, everything is so formulaic and romanticised to the point it makes me cringe. This is not a real life story, this is a very obvious hollywood motion picture, and it does everything to remind you that. Also, were there guys named MC Ren and DJ Yella in the group? Sorry, I didn't notice. Let alone a lot of lesser known people, who didn't even appear in the film. 2Pac appeared though. Only, he had nothing to do with this story, and the scene with him was so forced. And you can see that attitude in the credits too: for some reason they inserted Kendrick's quote, cause of course, he's hot right now, isn't he? This whole film is just pandering to the stars' egos. Anybody, who wasn't popular enough, isn't good enough to appear in it. What makes me sad though, is that there's a lot of people, who don't know shit about N.W.A., and who're gonna be completely misinformed after watching this. On the positive note though, O'Shea Jr. absolutely embodied Ice Cube's character. He was great. And Alexandra Shipp is gorgeous.
