A postmodernist Daoist/Stoicist take on the Star Trek/Planet of the Apes type of soft sci-fi, bundled with critique of climate change and the materialistic and competitive nature of our capitalist society, packed in a highly entertaining action movie with typically (for Shyamalan) impressionistic sensibilities. Everything from the premise, to the cinematography, the editing, the music and even the art design is working in unison to deliver this specific vision. Honestly, I don't think anything of this sort has ever been done in Hollywood. However, it saddens me to say the movie has some serious pacing problems. In particular the first act feels a bit rushed and the third act imo fails to deliver the catharsis that it's aiming for. If only this movie had the additional 20-30 mintues of runtime, I think these problems could be solved. And that's the main reason I have to take away half a star. That being said, the middle (and the biggest) chunk of the movie is near flawless. Everything from the crash to the arrival at the volcano is just amazing.
