以往的鄧小平研究，基本上將研究時段集中於鄧小平早年的革命經歷和晚年的改革業績。至於鄧小平在文革前十年期間（1956–1966）擔任中共中央總書記的政治角色和作為，往往被有意無意地忽略了。本書正是將研究對象鎖定在這段歷史書寫中的「失蹤」時期。

前言
1959 年的廬山會議，已經過去30 多年了。
廬山之變影響噹代中國歷史發展的進程至深且巨，階級鬥爭的理論與實
踐從此升級，引入黨內，直到中央領導層，終於導致十年動Luan的到來。
1980 年秋，討論《關於建國以來黨的若干歷史問題的決議》草稿時，
關於廬山會議，我曾作過一個較長的發言（《簡報》刊出兩萬餘字）。當時
就有中央領導同志催我，將這段史實盡快詳細寫出，否則，許多真相後代
難以弄清。作為一個親身經歷者，自己也覺得義不容辭。但由於工作繁忙
及種種原因，一直未能動筆。現在利用在青島消夏的時間，將已經收集和
整理過的資料編寫出來。
所寫的是回憶錄，以自己親身經歷為主，同時也記錄了許多史料，尤其
是毛澤東的多次講話，當年並無錄音或正式記錄（如兩次常委會的批彭紀
實是我記錄的），為傳信存真，考慮再三，還是儘可能如原貌都保存下來，
以供黨史研究者參考（這對於毛澤東晚年「左」的錯誤思想研究，也是很
有用處的）。一般讀來或嫌繁瑣、枯燥，這也是難以兩全，無可奈何之事。
由於人為限制、保密制度和種種清規戒律，當代歷史包括黨史的研究，
還沒有真正進入繁榮時期，離自由討論、科學探索也還很有距離。我這篇
史料性的東西，其中引用的不少資料，其實在十年動Luan中已由紅衛兵散播
開來，國外研究當代中國的學者一直在利用，應該說不再具有機密的性質
了。我現在不能說自己所記的一定全部準確無誤，但我還相信自己的記憶
力和判斷力，一生在寫作方面也是一個謹慎的人，一字一句我都是負責的。
如果有錯誤或不準確之處，希望讀者指正。
廬山會議雖然是當代至關重要的一段史實，牽涉到許多「敏感」的人事，
但畢竟過去30 多年了，可以到「任人評說」的時候了。我們許多老同志尤
其紅軍老同志，寫了許多有價值的回憶錄，這是留給後人的一份珍貴遺產。
我們的黨史上有許多有爭議之事，待做正確結論；不論怎樣，直接或間接
的當事人，將它寫出來，儘管不完善甚或有錯誤，我總覺得寫出比不寫出
好。否則，人亡事滅，說不定歷史會留下空白點或竟成為千古之謎。因此，
史學界所謂要「搶救活資料」，是很有道理的。在廬山時，我親自聽到彭德
懷說過，「我一生不留筆記與文件」。但為了要澄清對自己多年沉重的種種
歷史誤解（「三七開」，執行立三路線，打長沙，打贛州，會理會議，軍分
會指示，二次王明路線，百團大戰，高饒事件，廬山會議等），他終於在待
罪閒居時，寫了《八萬言書》以為申訴；在傷殘囚居時，又如實「交代」
了自己一生經歷。這就是我們現在何等幸運地讀到的《彭德懷自述》。
作為當事人，我提供了這樣一份史料性東西，自己也覺得是了卻了一件
多年來的心事。
再說一句：我期待讀者的批評指正。

Guangxi, a region on China's southern border with Vietnam, has a large population of ethnic minorities and a history of rebellion and intergroup conflict. In the summer of 1968, during the high tide of the Cultural Revolution, it became notorious as the site of the most severe and extensive violence observed anywhere in China during that period of upheaval. Several cities saw urban combat resembling civil war, while waves of mass killings in rural communities generated enormous death tolls. More than one hundred thousand died in a few short months.

These events have been chronicled in sensational accounts that include horrific descriptions of gruesome murders, sexual violence, and even cannibalism. Only recently have scholars tried to explain why Guangxi was so much more violent than other regions.
