Everything was Forever, Until it was No More: The Last Soviet Generation [图书] Goodreads 豆瓣
作者: Alexei Yurchak Princeton University Press 2005 - 10 其它标题: Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More
Soviet socialism was based on paradoxes that were revealed by the peculiar experience of its collapse. To the people who lived in that system the collapse seemed both completely unexpected and completely unsurprising. At the moment of collapse it suddenly became obvious that Soviet life had always seemed simultaneously eternal and stagnating, vigorous and ailing, bleak and full of promise. Although these characteristics may appear mutually exclusive, in fact they were mutually constitutive. This book explores the paradoxes of Soviet life during the period of “late socialism” (1960s-1980s) through the eyes of the last Soviet generation.

Focusing on the major transformation of the 1950s at the level of discourse, ideology, language, and ritual, Alexei Yurchak traces the emergence of multiple unanticipated meanings, communities, relations, ideals, and pursuits that this transformation subsequently enabled. His historical, anthropological, and linguistic analysis draws on rich ethnographic material from Late Socialism and the post-Soviet period.

The model of Soviet socialism that emerges provides an alternative to binary accounts that describe that system as a dichotomy of official culture and unofficial culture, the state and the people, public self and private self, truth and lie — and ignore the crucial fact that, for many Soviet citizens, the fundamental values, ideals, and realities of socialism were genuinely important, although they routinely transgressed and reinterpreted the norms and rules of the socialist state.

Baku: Symphony of Sirens. Sound Experiments in the Soviet AvantGarde [音乐] 豆瓣
10.0 (6 个评分) Baku
发布日期 2008年12月8日 出版发行: Rer
An incredible artefact from ReR, this double-disc release comes housed in a beautifully detailed book, all dedicated to the pioneers of the Russian avant-garde in the early twentieth century. The first disc captures a modern-day reconstruction of Arseni Avraamov's Symphony Of Sirens, a public sound event originally conceived in 1922, made up from factory sirens, military regiments, steam locomotives and choirs, all representing the lively sonic signature of the port city of Baku. In addition to that there are 39 short-form sound pieces, reproduced from original works by the key experimenters of the era, including Dziga Vertov and Sergei Prokofiev. The second disc is probably even better, kicking off with Dziga Vertov's Enthusiasm! The Dombass Symphony from 1930. This is an original recording by the Man With A Movie Camera director, and it's an epiphany for any fans of early electronic/noise music, featuring painstaking, laborious documents of the clamour heard in mines, factories and furnaces. Further to that, the disc rounds off with a library-like collection of shorter sound works captured around the same time, including recordings from Alexander Mossolov, Leon Trotsky, Boris Pasternak and Dmitri Shostakovitch. The accompanying book is crammed with explanatory text and photographs, making this an invaluable item for anyone with an interest in Soviet-era art and music.

Valentina Goncharova 类型: 电子
发布日期 2020年6月21日 出版发行: shukai
Historically informed violin player, prize-winning street musician, new age experimentalist, chamber ensemble performer and conservatoire deviant. The career of Valentina Goncharova (b. Kyiv 1953) shares parallels with those associated with the broader new music movement of the 20th century and the dissemination of home recording technologies. Valentina’s was a youth spent immersed in the world of classical music study under soviet rule, first in Kyiv and later in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) from the age of 16. With the supervision of professors M. Vayman and B. Gutnikov she learned concert violin and developed alternate playing styles alongside skilled pianists. A student of the Leningrad conservatoire during the years 1969 through to 1983, her repertoire included music for violin and later expanded to contemporary music composition. The improvisatory nature of free jazz and then budding experimental rock circles also intrigued Valentina during this period in Leningrad. Departing from the rules of the conservatoire, she briefly performed in underground rock clubs alongside future members of the industrial group Pop- Mechanika (Popular Mechanics). This perpetual state of flux is central to the variety found within ‘Recordings Vol. 1’, though as opposed to any degree of uncertainty Valentina’s practice is one in flux by way of earnest curiosity.

Anatoly Vapirov / Sergey Kuriokhin

A 2-CD set
Especially through his work in the jazz Avantgarde of the former Soviet Union Anatoly Vapirov is known to friends of improvising music. He was the leading saxophonist and one of the most important composers of Leningrad's contemporary jazz scene.
Due to family reasons - his father and his wife are Bulgarians - in 1985 he moved to Varna in Bulgaria. Since 1992 he has been leading the Varna jazz Festival, which presented a sophisticated program and became an important axis for encounter between jazz musicians from East and West Europe . "In the beginning I was inviting musicians, because I wanted to play with them myself," says Anatoly. "Meanwhile some kind of musical workshop has developed; a laboratory, where musicians from East and West can meet."
In 1974 - still in Soviet times - with the "Bulgarian Rondo" for saxophone and orchestra Vapirov already referred to his Bulgarian roots. As early as the mid-seventies and in opposition to many free-jazz-hardliners, Vapirov included the entire range of classical music, chamber-music, jazz and folklore within his expressive style.
He composed a Concerto for a jazz quartett, mezzosoprano and choir ("Slav Mystery," 1977) as well as a piece for bass, piano, saxophone and string quartett, that reflects the music of Alban Berg ("Lines of Destiny," 1980). His borderline frankness would expose itself likewise in projects with symphony orchestras and Sibirian folklore ensembles.
In the "Fairy Tale Trio" Anatoly plays the soprano saxophone exclusively. The musician, who is also known as a brilliant clarinettist and tenor saxophone player, doesn't blow his trio collegues off the stage. The sound of the soprano saxophone merges most sufficiently with Spassov's kaval.
"I have grown older and maybe a little wiser," he explains. "Good music doesn't come out of unrestricted strenghth and expressivity only, but also out of deep probing."
At the end of our conversation I asked him: "You are driving your car and you pass two hitch-hikers. One of them is John Coltrane and the other is Albert Ayler. But you've got only one seat. Which one do you pick up?" Vapirov: "This seat is already taken. Since 1967. By John Coltrane."

The album was released in Russia in 1998 with a bonus track. This Russian reissue was rereissued in 2013 on vinyl.

作者: Michael Idov (Editor) / Bela Shayevich (Contributor) Rizzoli 2011 - 4
This irreverent survey celebrates the more populist and enduring work in graphic and industrial design that was a product of the Soviet era - a period that remain politically sensitive and under-explored, yet whose influence on the objects and aesthetics of Russian life and thought has been profound.
Made in Russia presents fifty such masterpieces, from pioneers of Soviet technology such as the Sputnik, the Buran snowmobile, and the LOMO camera to icons of quotidian culture such as the fishnet shopping bag, the beveled glass, a Cold War-inspired arcade game, and Misha the Olympic bear. Edited by the journalist and author Michael Idov - a Soviet product himself - and including essays from Boris Kachka, Vitaly Komar, Gary Shteyngart, and Lara Vapnyar, the collection explores the provenance of these objects in the forgotten Soviet culture and the unique climate for design from which they could only have emerged.

Previously of the Leningrad Jazz Ensemble, and better known as a free jazz musician, "Mysteria" was Anatoli Vapirov's odd album out, being jazz fusion akin to Arsenal in feel, or British acts like Centipede or Nucleus.
