Lu Xun (1881–1936) is widely considered the greatest writer of twentieth-century China. Although primarily known for his two slim volumes of short fiction, he was a prolific and inventive essayist. Jottings under Lamplight showcases Lu Xun’s versatility as a master of prose forms and his brilliance as a cultural critic with translations of sixty-two of his essays, twenty of which are translated here for the first time.
While a medical student in Tokyo, Lu Xun viewed a photographic slide that purportedly inspired his literary calling: it showed the decapitation of a Chinese man by a Japanese soldier, as Chinese bystanders watched apathetically. He felt that what his countrymen needed was a cure not for their physical ailments but for their souls. Autobiographical accounts describing this and other formative life experiences are included in Jottings, along with a wide variety of cultural commentaries, from letters, speeches, and memorials to parodies and treatises.
Lu Xun was remarkably well versed in Chinese tradition and playfully manipulated its ancient forms. But he also turned away from historical convention, experimenting with new literary techniques and excoriating the “slave mentality” of a population paralyzed by Confucian hierarchies. Tinged at times with notes of despair, yet also with pathos, humor, and an unparalleled caustic wit, Lu Xun’s essays chronicle the tumultuous transformations of his own life and times, providing penetrating insights into Chinese culture and society.

In 1961 Robert van Gulik published his pioneering overview of Sexual Life in Ancient China. This edition of the work is preceded by an elaborate introduction by Paul Rakita Goldin assessing the value of Van Gulik’s volume, the subject itself, and its author.
The introduction is followed by an extensive and up-to-date bibliography on the subject, which guides the modern reader in the
literature on the field which appeared after the publication of Van Gulik's volume.
One of the criticisms in 1961 regarded the Latin translations of passages deemed too explicit by Van Gulik.
In this 2002 edition all Latin has for the first time been translated into unambiguous English, thus making the full text widely available to an academic audience.

《冈志》。康熙年间北京回民社区牛街的一本志书，太医院供职回民御医赵士英撰。内容涵盖教内政、教、商、民各个方面。许多教内有意思的纷争趣事，名流人物的轶事掌故，跃然纸上，读来亲切，如置身在三百多年前的北京牛街。许多重要的信息可以和《经学系传谱》互参。北京乃古时回教的中心，南来北往，名人汇聚，得风气之先，标志性的事件，直接影响全国的回教状况，至今看来仍然有元典意义。《冈志》中所记载的故事，牵涉了重要的回教人物和事件，读此一书不是局限在牛街一地，而能和全国范围打通，这是《冈志》独有的价值。日光之下并无新事，《冈志》记载的教门状况，与今日并无太大变化，因此有极大的借鉴意义，实是不可多得的回教文献。北京民族古籍整理出版小组点校，1991年出版。现孔夫子旧书网，尚有不多的本子在售，建议可收一册。治学必备，消夏必备。

拉萨具有1300多年建城历史，在市区或市郊有许多古地名含有丰富的文化内涵，从这些地名也可以看出拉萨城市的变迁。《古城拉萨市区历史地名考》把拉萨老城区地名分为居民区地名，古街区、街巷地名，村落地名，宫殿之名，驻藏大臣衙门、庙宇之名，园林之名，官邸名宅之名，古商业店铺之名，山水地名，转经道地名等。每一个地名的由来、位置、含义、藏文写法及词义、汉语拼写等，作者都一一作了考证，查阅了大量的档案资料。作者走访了不少专家、老僧人和民间人士，请他们讲述当地风俗、地名由来等。另外，作者还查找文献记录和老照片，将原来地方的风貌展现给读者，利用走访之机，将地方现状拍摄了照片，使本书图文并茂，更具可读性。
《古城拉萨市区历史地名考》由达瓦编著。

全书分为8张18节，分别论述了后金时期的满族传统文学、顺康年间的满语翻译文学、乾隆年间满语文学的兴盛、嘉道年间满语文学的衰落以及锡伯人、达斡尔人的满语文学等。在满语文学史分期、满汉文学接触、满语文学的兴起发展及衰落等方面，进行了系统论述。

本书系中国社会科学院世界宗教研究所的学者主持的“国情调研”项目之一，该项目旨在通过对临夏州伊斯兰教各门宦作田野调查，收集门宦的相关资料，了解掌握门宦的发展状况，并以此为基础对门宦的历史及其未来进行思考。由于本课题涉及门宦的信众、宗教思想、祭仪、教团制度、宗教建筑、门宦之间的关系、门宦与社会的关系等方面内容，所以本书作者的调查对象及其采集内容比较复杂。作者在学理分析方面行笔老道，历史追溯上详略得体，问题设计上颇费心机，原始资料的收集也堪称丰富，尤其是对门宦制度的对策性探讨彰显了学者应有的批评精神和学术眼界。相比同类课题的水平，本书属于上乘，有较强的可读性和较高的学术价值。

《民族文学的书写与构建》，收录了阿扎提·苏里坦在各个时期撰写的文学评论文章，有对文学的理解，对作家的评价，对作品的分析，体现了他的专业水准。每篇文章，都有自己的思考和见解，都曾在学术界得到过高度的肯定，也在文学工作者中，引起过较大的反响。

《传承方式与演唱传统:哈萨克族民间演唱艺人调查研究》内容简介：一个民族的文化，是数千年精神和物质的积淀，因而又是一座取之不尽的宝山，应该进行充分的挖掘和利用。哈萨克族在漫长的历史进程中创造出了蕴涵着浓厚游牧特色的文化，其中最具特色的是包括神话、寓言、传说、叙事诗、故事和歌谣在内的洋溢着传统文化气息的文学。然而，在哈萨克族文学研究方面，尤其是在民间演唱艺人的研究方面显得非常薄弱，这与民间演唱艺人的实际状态极不相符，许多方面仍然处于空白，至今国内还没有一部论述哈萨克族民间演唱艺人的汉文专著。现在民间演唱艺人越来越少，有些类型的演唱艺人已经消失或处于消失的边缘。
这部专著运用文化人类学、社会学和民俗学的调查方法，对哈萨克族民间演唱艺人的所处环境、传承方式、演唱形式和社会职能进行了实地调查，结合访谈案例及19世纪以来各个时期的研究成果，从共时和历时两个方面进行了系统的分析和归类，基本上把哈萨克族民间演唱艺人的嬗变过程、发展历史和所处状况展现在了我们的面前。
草原的辽阔、壮丽和博大，铸就了哈萨克族宽厚、耿直、剽悍和英武的性格，也造就了一代代歌唱在草原的民间艺人。他们作为民间文学的演唱者从游牧文化这个母体中孕育而出，肩负着传承民族传统文化的重任。没有独特的游牧生活，就没有深受游牧文化熏陶的民间演唱艺人，也就没有我们今天能够欣赏到的文学作品。可见，民间演唱艺人研究在哈萨克族传统文化中占有极其重要的地位。

伊斯兰文化是在西方吸收了希腊、罗马、埃及文化，是东方汲取了伊朗、印度、中国文化的基础上而形成的，是中世纪文化发展的一个高峰。本书叙述的伊斯兰文物中，有些体现出某些中国文化的因素，另有些则为中国文化所吸收。本书通过双方文物的对比研究可从一个侧面展示出伊斯兰世界与中国的文化交流。
本书着重介绍20世纪以来出土和发现的7世纪至15世纪从国外输入到中国的大量伊斯兰文物。这为研究伊斯兰世界文化及其与中国的关系提供了极为珍贵的实物资料。这些中国出土的伊斯兰玻璃大多数为完整器，而且是不可多得的艺术精品，能给人以美的享受；并具有精确的年代可考，具有很高的学术价值。
