Following last year’s completion of his highly-praised Beethoven cycle András Schiff returns to Bach with a superb interpretation of the six “Partitas”, recorded live in September 2007 at Neumarkt Reitstadl one of the best piano music venues in Eurpoe. The cycle, which in 1731 was the first group of works to be published by Bach himself, represents a unique stylistic synthesis of the suite form with a particular emphasis on most varied and imaginative opening movements. In his 1802 biography of Bach, Nikolaus Forkel famously wrote that “such splendid compositions for the clavier had not been seen or heard before… so brilliant, harmonious, expressive and constantly novel are they.” Compared to his London studio recording of 1983 this second rendering on disc demonstrates Schiff’s stylistic development towards more freedom, sonic depth and sheer pleasure of phrasing. The rather unorthodox sequence of partitas – 5 – 3 – 1 – 2 – 4 – 6 – draws an ascending line of keys leading from G major to e minor.

The Art of the Piano is a feature-length, 106-minute documentary that presents in refreshingly straightforward fashion a portrait of 20th-century piano playing. The format is simple: short segments on virtually all of the great pianists who have ever been captured on film, augmented by extracts from interviews, sometimes with the pianists themselves, or with later conductors and musicians of international stature, including specially filmed contributions from Daniel Barenboim, Sir Colin Davis, Evgeny Kissin, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, and Tamás Vásáry. The 17th-century musician and writer Thomas Mace described in 1676 how listeners were "drawn into raptures and contemplations by...musick's divine language, to quietness, joy, and peace; absolute tranquility." This double-disc set offers over 2 1/2 hours of Baroque era music that validates Mace's assertion by focusing on slow tempo excerpts culled from the masterworks of the period's preeminent composers. The resultant overall tone of meditative calm and serenity is established right from the start with the familiar strains of Pachelbel's Canon and is sustained throughout by the variety of examples of the forms, styles, and innovations developed by the likes of J.S. Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Albinoni. Even taken out of context, selections such as Gluck's "Dance of the blessed spirits," Purcell's "Dido's Lament," and Pergolesi's Stabat Mater are powerful representations of what came to be known as Baroque.
