榆林窟壁画艺术是敦煌石窟艺术的重要组成部分。它在佛教思想、壁画内容、表现形式等方面，均与莫高窟一致，甚至一些壁画的作者也是与莫高窟共有的。曹氏画院的画工、画师，不只在沙州，也受命到瓜州的榆林窟作画。但是，榆林窟艺术并非莫高窟的翻版，而是具有许多自己的特色：如在洞窟形制上，有完整的前室和长甬道，主室壁上画出十二根排柱支撑窟顶宝帐的窟室样式，都是莫高窟所没有的。壁画中西夏和元代的密教曼荼罗和水月观音图，显密结合加以汉密、藏密结合的画法，尤其大量的民族人物画像、画工画师画像，以及汉藏婚礼图，也都补充了莫高窟之不足。在艺术风格的多样化及艺术美的创造上，榆林窟的一些作品超过了莫高窟，如西夏的线描和水墨山水；特别是唐代吐蕃时期第25窟壁画，人物造型简练，用线纯熟、有力，色彩明丽而不浮华，其保存完好程度更使莫高窟同时期壁画难以比拟。榆林窟艺术的高度成就，大大丰富了以莫高窟为首的敦煌石窟艺术体系。莫高窟、榆林窟，同西千佛洞、东千佛洞、水峡口千佛洞、五个庙石窟等（图15），共同构成了伟大的古代艺术宝库。
