The transition from roll to codex as the standard format of the book is one of the most culturally significant innovations of Late Antiquity. The Codex and Crafts in Late Antiquity examines surviving evidence in order to better understand how this transition took place. Placing the codex into the general cultural, religious, and technological context of Late Antiquity, the book examines the major types of codices—the wooden tablet codex, the single-quire codex and the multi-quire codex—in all their structural, technical, and decorative features. Georgios Boudalis argues that the codex was not an ingenious invention but rather an innovation that evolved using techniques already widely employed by artisans and craftspeople in the creation of everyday items such as socks, shoes, and baskets, revealing that the codex was a fascinating, yet practical, development.

Traditional scholarship on manuscripts has tended to focus on issues concerning their production and has shown comparatively little interest in the cultural contexts of the manuscript book. The Medieval Manuscript Book redresses this by focusing on aspects of the medieval book in its cultural situations. Written by experts in the study of the handmade book before print, this volume combines bibliographical expertise with broader insights into the theory and praxis of manuscript study in areas from bibliography to social context, linguistics to location, and archaeology to conservation. The focus of the contributions ranges widely, from authorship to miscellaneity, and from vernacularity to digital facsimiles of manuscripts. Taken as a whole, these essays make the case that to understand the manuscript book it must be analyzed in all its cultural complexity, from production to transmission to its continued adaptation.

China's sixteenth and seventeenth centuries saw an unprecedented explosion in the production and circulation of woodblock-printed books. What can surviving traces of that era's print culture reveal about the makers and consumers of these books? Home and the World addresses this question by carefully examining a wide range of late Ming books, considering them not merely as texts, but as material objects and economic commodities designed, produced, and marketed to stand out in the distinctive book marketplace of the time, and promising high enjoyment and usefulness to readers. Although many of the mass-market commercial imprints studied here might have struck scholars from the eighteenth century on as too trivial, lowbrow, or slipshod to merit serious study, they prove to be an invaluable resource, providing insight into their readers' orientations toward the increasingly complex global stage of early modernity and toward traditional Chinese conceptions of textual, political, and moral authority. On a more intimate scale, they tell us about readers' ideals of a fashionable and pleasurable private life. Through studying these works, we come closer to recapturing the trend-conscious, sophisticated, and often subversive ways readers at this important moment in China's history imagined their world and their place within it.

陈乃乾（1896.9—1971.2），浙江海宁人，文献学家、编辑出版家。陈氏致力版本目录学研究与古籍流布数十年，先后任职上海进步书店、大东书局、上海市通志馆、古籍出版社、中华书局等处，编有《全上古三代秦汉三国六朝文》、《影刊宋金元明本词》、《清代学术丛书》等；撰有《四库全书总目提要索引》、《室名别号索引》、《清代碑文通检》等。陈乃乾在出版、学术两界地位尊崇，组织过多种重要文献的出版，且交往极为广泛，从业一生，所经所见，殆非同时之人能及。其日记上起1922年，下至1966年，跨度长达四十余年，内容丰富，可想而知。近人感时伤事，借笔墨抒胸臆，往往形诸日记，连篇累牍，不能自休；陈乃乾日记与此颇异，言简意赅，每日多不过数百字，而富有价值：如访书经历、掌故见闻、版本考订、编纂工作、人物交往……乃至一时物价，甚或偶闻验方，一一形诸笔墨，直截明快，便于学者读用。鉴于陈乃乾日记的重要史料价值，今予出版，以飨读者。

这部书由乔秀岩、王铿编译，之所以用编字，可能是因为书在1989年汲古书院出版《正史宋元版の研究》的基础上由乔秀岩增加了一部分修订。此书是尾崎康先生的博士论文，很多人以为只是90年代北大出的《以正史为中心的宋元版研究》的增补本，其实彼本只是尾崎先生在北大的一份讲演稿，和这部大书的性质和贡献都不能相比。这部书的增订译出，也是版本学研究一个重要成果。
