This book is a comprehensive guide to the International Phonetic Alphabet, widely used for over a century to transcribe the sounds of languages. The Handbook is in three parts: Part I contains an introduction to phonetic description and exemplification of the use of phonetic symbols; Part II consists of twenty-nine "Illustrations" of the application of the International Phonetic Alphabet to a range of languages; and Part III covers speech pathology, computer codings, and the history of the IPA. 附录中收录了季羡林先生根据德国学者斯坦茨勒的《梵语基础读本》翻译的《梵文语法讲义》，与金克木先生编写的《梵文文法》，其中《梵文语法讲义》是首次公开出版。对于梵语学习者而言，本书是必不可少的优秀教材。
