Set against the background of the Battle of Waterloo, Becky Sharp is the story of Vanity Fair by Thackeray. Becky and Amelia are girls at school together, but Becky is from a "show biz" family, or in other words, very low class. Becky manages to insinuate herself in Amelia's family and gets to know all their friends. From this possibly auspicious- beginning, she manages to ruin her own life, becoming sick, broke, and lonely, and also ruins the lives of many other "loved ones". In the movie we get to see the class distinctions in England at the time, and get a sense of what it was like for the English military at the time of the Napoleonic wars.
In the years just preceding Waterloo, best friends Amelia Sedley (Frances Dee) and Becky Sharp (Miriam Hopkins) graduate from Miss Pinkerton's Academy for Girls. The wealthy Amelia invites the penniless Becky into the bosom of her family home while the manipulative Becky plots her climb up the social ladder. Entirely lacking in scruples and unhampered by conscience or morality, Becky ascends to the very pinnacle of society, crushing anyone who stands in her path.
Set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, Rouben Mamoulian's adaptation of Thackeray's epic novel Vanity Fair was the first film to be produced in three strip Technicolor.

　　歌剧院里，杂耍表演结束的舞台上，报幕员走上舞台，隆重介绍“记忆先生”梅里克（怀特·沃森 饰）。借惊人的记忆，梅里克回答着观众各种刁钻古怪的问题。嘈杂的人群中，加拿大男人理查德·汉纳（罗伯特·多纳特 饰）提问了一个有关加拿大地理方面的问题，“记忆先生”准确地给出答案。枪声！两声枪响，让原本嘈杂不堪的歌剧院顿时陷入混乱。人群涌向出口，一个陌生而漂亮的女子紧跟着汉纳，在拥挤的人群中挤出歌剧院，随汉纳来到他租住的布兰特公寓。 　　女子（露西·曼娜海姆 饰）自称施密斯小姐，受雇于英国间谍机构，因保护英国空军防空机密而遭到陌生人的追踪。施密斯的任务是前往苏格兰，与一个右手小拇指缺一截的男人接头。男人是秘密间谍组织“三十九级台阶”的负责人。透过窗帘，汉纳确实看到窗外的墙根下站着两个神秘的男子。入夜，施密斯小姐突然闯进汉纳的房间，丢下一句“快走！下一个将是你”后，倒地死去，背后插着一把尖刀。 　　施密斯小姐的死，让汉纳感到恐惧，接着又觉得疑惑。怀着恐惧而疑惑的心情，汉纳逃出旅馆，搭上火车，前往苏格兰。火车上，汉纳从报纸上看到警察已经发现了施密斯小姐的尸体，自己却成了凶杀犯正被警方通缉。陌生女人帕梅拉（玛德琳·卡罗尔 饰）的告密，让警察闻讯而至。汉纳机智的甩开警察的追捕，跳下火车，来到苏格兰的一处农庄。 　　警察尾随而来。贪财的农夫将汉纳出卖给警察，好心的农妇却给了汉纳一条生路。翻山、越岭、涉水、斩棘，汉纳依然遭到警察的追捕。此时，汉纳按照施密斯临死前留下一张地图，找到乔纳教授的山庄。适逢酒神节。乔纳巧妙地支走警察，露出“庐山真面”。汉纳发现，乔纳竟然就是施密斯说的那个小拇指缺一截的接头人，而施密斯的真名叫安娜·贝拉。 　　接下来发生的事情更加扑朔迷离，汉纳的处境也越来越危险。当汉纳从扑朔迷离中发现空军机密与“三十九级台阶”秘密间谍组织有关时，已经是在回到伦敦后的歌剧院。“记忆先生”的回答，提醒了汉纳。原来，间谍组织是想利用“记忆先生”惊人的记忆，将空军机密带出英国。真相在最后一刻揭露，清白在最后一刻洗清，乔纳教授在最后一刻现形，“记忆先生”却在最后一刻用生命保护了国防机密。

故事发生在一艘名为“邦迪号”的军舰上，舰长威廉（查尔斯·劳顿 Charles Laughton 饰）是行业内数一数二的航海专家，但这并不意味着他是一个好人。航行在茫茫的大海上，一艘军舰就是一个国家，作为一国之主，威廉不惜使用着各种残酷而又暴力的手段，为的只是巩固他作为“国王”的地位和权威。
对于舰长所执行的暴政，年轻的士官拜姆（法兰奇·汤恩 Franchot Tone 饰）和大副克里斯（克拉克·盖博 Clark Gable 饰）感到十分的不满，在长久的压抑下，起义爆发了，在两人的带领下，水手们制服了威廉和其手下，可善良的人们并没有处死他们的暴君，而是将他们放逐到海上，让海洋来选择他们的生死。自由重新回到了“邦迪号”上，不幸的是，故事并没有就此结束。
