1991年，随着SFC的降临，老态的FC立刻被大部分游戏商遗忘。但向来念旧的Capcom不会，他为自己忠实的玩家开发了一款全新的特别版。它那可爱的Q版造型让所有人眼前为之一亮，其实设计成这样，也主要是迫于NES机能的不足，令人吃惊的是，游戏的精彩程度居然丝毫不输于老前辈们。虽然本作只能单打，但却可以任选三位主角，主角们没有武器，只能徒手格斗，却能通过打倒敌人获取经验值，以增加生命槽的长度。本作还引入了一个后来为借用的创意，你可以在战斗之前与boss进行幽默的交谈，具有讽刺意味的是，本作是任系平台上唯一有女敌人登场的系列作。
虽然它算不上FC上最好的动作清版游戏，但依然十分出色，在2006推出的GBA怀旧合集中，也原封不动地收录了本作。

相对于前作，KOF97登场人物再次进行了调整，草薙京的徒弟矢吹真吾加入，高人气的《饿狼传说》

人物玛丽，龙二，比利也加入到了此作，前作BOSS队退出江湖，在系统设定上，KOF97提供了ADVANCED MODE和EXTRA MODE两种模式选择。前者是以KOF96为基础，但能量槽最大可以蓄满3格（每蓄满一格以一颗宝珠形式表示），并且会因角色之间的关系影响下一位队员的能量槽。根据角色的不同，在选择人物出场次序的时候，可以看到下一位队员的心情，黄色的笑脸表示可以多获得一颗宝珠，无表情的白脸则无得无失，红色的怒脸则会丢失宝珠。同时追加了一些新的跳跃特性，大大提高了游戏的速度性和战略性。其中小跳成为对战时最常见进攻方式。而EXTRA MODE 则相当于KOF94和KOF95 系统的继承，可以使用防守时回避和进攻，而且前冲不能。KOF97必杀技的出招速度加快，必杀技的输入也得到了进一步的简化，甚至可以取消必杀技收招的硬直时间，进而发出更多华丽的甚至是致命的连续技。暴走莉安娜以及暴走八神庵这两位对战时禁用人物更是将速度发挥到了极限。虽然BUG满天飞，但是KOF97的出现，无疑是将KOF提升到了前所未有的高度，个人认为是KOF系列最经典的一作，直至今日，KOF97在各地街机厅也依然长盛不衰就是一个最好的证明。
