2026年1月22日 评论 a review of 重返寂静岭 - Let me preface this by saying that I love the first Silent Hill  movie. I also wasn’t looking for a one-to-one recreation of the game’s plot here. Heck, I’ll even confess that I somewhat enjoy Revelation  for its fanservice. Consequently, I’d been looking forward to this movie for what feels like a very long time. ESPECIALLY due to Christophe Gans returning to direct. I get many members of the fanbase have their problems with the guy that they constantly repeat VERBATIM every time his name is brought up as if they all make up some extremely petty, severely autistic hivemind, but typically even the most jaded among them will admit that the French auteur nailed the visuals and tone of the franchise to deliver an experience that genuinely feels like watching someone play the source material onscreen, even if he didn’t quite get the plot right. He certainly brings back that same visual panache to this standalone follow-up. Return ’s greatest strength is undoubtedly how good it looks. The far darker, much more industrial portrayal of the iconic “Otherworld” bares a stronger resemblance to the PS1 classic’s as opposed to any of its sequels, and the constant stylistic flourishes such as the creative camera angles—particularly during the energetic chase sequences which comprise the bulk of the traditional “action”—pair with the often striking monster designs to create appropriately abrasive, uncomfortable imagery that only bolsters the surreal vibe. A vibe itself that is being enhanced thanks to the cast’s performances expertly recapturing the unsettling, dreamlike unnaturalness of their in-game counterparts. Unfortunately the biggest complaint that gets leveled against Gans as a filmmaker is that while he is able to make undeniably striking treats for the eyes, the narratives of his works often leave a lot to be desired. Nowhere has that been more evident than here. The purists who deemed his changes to the property’s established lore in the original as unnecessary at best are guaranteed to be absolutely enraged from the very first second this begins, as the film literally opens with James racing down the road in a Mustang convertible whilst smoking a blunt. What’s worse? Those open to a new twist on the story aren’t likely to fare any better. This a confounding and ultimately deeply silly reimagining of the legendary survival-horror title. I remember in the promotional material leading up to this that Gans said he would placing a greater emphasis on the psychological side of the  Silent Hill  brand this time around. A certainly intriguing prospect given the series’ pedigree, yet he and his fellow cowriters utterly botched the execution. This winds up being one of those that leaves you completely perplexed in a “what the !@#$%&* am I watching?” sort of way for the majority of its runtime. It’s weird enough to keep you engaged, but the problem with this approach is that its success is totally dependent on the strength of its big reveals, and my word are they stupid here to the degree that I was left staring at the theater screen irritated, baffled as to why this was the direction they chose to go, and in pure disbelief. The end results are less Jacob’s Ladder  1990, and tragically more Jacob’s Ladder  2019. The whole cult element also goes woefully unexplained (it’s never clear what the freaks are even doing) and the manner in which the conclusion tries to merge aspects from a couple of the game’s possible outcomes with a popular longstanding fan theory is honestly kind of insulting. Despite being often enthralled with the grim beauty of the sights on display, I can’t think of anyone I would truly recommend this to. Silent Hill 2 lovers? Nope, my inner one wept. Fellow appreciators of the first movie? Can’t, since they’ll be just as crushed as I was. General horror enthusiasts? Nah, this is more likely to make them laugh than scream. I was legitimately the target audience for this and I walked away nothing short of very disappointed. Man, The Mortuary Assistant , Mortal Kombat II , Cregger’s Resident Evil , and Street Fighter  really need to deliver, because between this, The Minecraft Movie ,  Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 , and Iron Lung  not looking so great, it seems like we may be returning to the days of abominable video game adaptations. Hurry back Sonic , we need you buddy.

2024年1月8日 评论 a review of 养鬼吃人10:审判 - Darn you, Gary Tunnicliffe. You were supposed to be different...  I will say this, Judgement is certainly interesting. Unfortunately, it's guilty of the same sins as the edited spec script sequels. After appreciating how very Hellraiser the story he wrote for Revelations was (even if I didn't appreciate the overall movie as a whole much), watching his decent short fan film No More Souls , hearing his own proclaimed disappointment with the previous follow-ups to the original, and all the talk that this was supposedly the first entry in years to be written from the ground up to be a true successor I can only walk away disappointed with what the property's longtime makeup artist has brought us here. Rather than delivering the worthy, faithful to Barker's vision installment we were promised, Tunnicliffe instead once again relegates Pinhead and the Cenobites appearance to basically the last 15 or so minutes in order to do his own unique thing while using the franchise's name to drum up a modicum of interest in the project that otherwise wouldn't be there. Following an incredibly intriguing opening that sees Pinhead discussing the need to devise a new method of attracting victims in this era of technology where any perversion is merely a click away which goes absolutely nowhere, we see Tunnicliffe's plan to introduce and explore a new faction of hell clearly intended to take the place of the Cenobites. Only he doesn't stick with that long either before the whole thing just turns into another generic Se7en rip-off. It feels like two entirely different stories are going on that eventually get mashed together for a conclusion sporting the theme that the forces of Heaven are the real bad guys in a manner that comes off as being cooked up by a bunch of clowns who lurk around r/atheism. And for what? Some tasteless gross-out horror? I'll admit this is remarkably well-made and executed on such a low budget, allowing it to be surprisingly watchable. Especially when compared to a good portion of its predecessors. I might have been more forgiving of it didn't make me gag and I wasn't sure we were blatantly misled as to what it would be. Yeah everyone, Tunnicliffe played us like a cheap fiddle.

2023年4月29日 评论 a review of 恶灵 - It’s pretty fascinating how the careers of Neill Blomkamp and Duncan Jones have sort of mirrored each other to this point. Both burst onto the scene back in 2009 with critically acclaimed directorial debuts ( District   9 and Moon respectively) that had people immediately proclaiming them to be the future of the sci-fi genre, and delivered some well-received (even if slightly less so in Elysium ’s case) follow-ups afterwards that served to further cement that belief. Things started to go bad following their third films though, which proved divisive and kind of made everyone take a collective step back and say “you know, maybe these guys aren’t quite the revolutionary new talents we thought they were,” although I personally loved each. A train of thought that wasn’t helped by their universally panned fourth efforts… Demonic is essentially Blomkamp’s Mute . Only instead of being a dull, confused Blade Runner wannabe, it’s a dull and confused horror flick. The Chappie creator doesn’t stray too far from his science-fiction roots, however. The whole thing is centered around the concept of being able to jump into the minds of comatose patients Matrix -style with the help of technology. It’s a bit awkward in execution as these sequences are all entirely animated (the director has quite a few prior 3D animation credits on his resume) and look like a filmmaker who has never played a video game’s idea of a video game, but is still one of the merely three in total interesting aspects this movie has going for it regardless. Unfortunately, you’re not going to find much to get excited about here. The terror is practically nonexistent with exception to a brief, late-night house visit from the lovely and surprisingly bendy Kandyse McClure, altogether wasting a fantastic demon design (the second of the three interesting qualities). I’m not sure if it was pulled from actual demonology or not, but this unholy entity is so freaky looking you’ll honestly wish it was featured in something that utilized it more. Instead the majority of the runtime is dedicated to, well, basically nothing outside of unnecessarily drawing out the process of explaining everything, such as the protagonist’s damaged relationship with her possessed mother for example. Elements that might have proven more compelling had anyone onscreen been able to act. Lead actress Carly Pope may be the worst offender as she never provides the necessary appropriate emotional response to any given situation. The proceedings do show the barest hints of a pulse in the last half hour before concluding when the story inexplicably and rather pointlessly asks “what if the Vatican had guns?!” (the third and final interesting thing here) leading to an intriguing amalgam of religious, futuristic, and military imagery, but by then it’s too little, too late. Ultimately, a lot of this can be forgiven due to the low budget and the fact that it was shot during the Covid-19 pandemic, on top of it not being completely painful to sit through. Which is perhaps why the South African/Canadian’s prospects moving forward don’t yet appear to be as dire as that of his aforementioned peer’s. He may be getting ready to helm a pseudo-video game adaptation for the Gran Turismo property, a class of cinema never favored by the critics, but the only thing we’ve received from David Bowie’s son since his last misfire has been a comic book and vague rumors of a Rouge Trooper film that has shown no signs of ever actually having a chance at coming to fruition. Ouch . I digress of course. While there are traces of the imagination and creativity present that make it so I’m not ready to see the last of either man’s work, I sadly can’t recommend watching this lackluster display.

2022年7月16日 评论 a review of 永恒族 - If the somewhat lukewarm reception to the latest Thor and Doctor Strange is anything to go by, even the average moviegoer is beginning to feel the effects of franchise fatigue with the MCU. Which is why it's disappointing that its most unique outing that breaks away from the mold in a lot of ways might very well be it's worst effort to date. Eternals experiments with a new tone and style, but forgets to make any of it interesting outside of its admittedly enticing ending. The film introduces a new team of heroes who are basically a melancholy and boring version of the Avengers, or perhaps more accurately the Justice League considering one of the characters is literally just Marvel's Superman. The writers did their best to try and make them deeper and more complex than the rest of their peers by placing a strong emphasis on their struggle with their complicated origin and purpose. Unfortunately nobody onscreen comes off as anything greater than a basic motivation and a goal, while never undergoing any significant development or growth either. So it all feels like a bunch of unjustified melodrama at the end of the day, akin to what Zack Snyder gave us when he kicked off the DCEU. It also doesn't help that they're an unlikable bunch. Few times before has an assemblage of such recognizable and usually reliable names been this uncharismatic. On top of being as dull as dishwasher, the fact that the higher powered ones all bear secret resentments towards one another to the point where they anxiously await an opportunity to "clip each other's wings" makes them seem petty and hateful. It's an old trope in these type of group movies that's never made anyone in them endearing. Then there's the story and adventure themselves to consider, which lack excitement to boot. Kumail Nanjiani does his darndest to inject some life into the mix, but the script is working against him at every turn with bland action sequences and largely humourless attempts at comedy. Things do pick up some steam in the final act however. It's legitimately fun watching these guys and gals beat the crap out of each other thanks to their neat powers, and the shocking cliffhanger conclusion honestly had my jaw on the floor. Paired with the compelling post-credit stingers I became cautiously intrigued with the future of these heroes despite not enjoying the majority of what came beforehand. Ultimately, it gets some points for pulling something out of its butt right there at the end to actually leave me awaiting a sequel. Although, that follow-up is going to need to improve on a lot. On top of the stuff I already mentioned, this narrative only serves to highlight how the MCU has the most convoluted and perplexing lore of any cinematic property possibly ever. Featuring more cosmic threats, entities, organizations, races, dimensions, and gods than the entire Cthulhu mythos. I will say the additions to it here do turn out to be fascinating and have immense potential moving forward if handled correctly. This was sadly just a very poor introduction to this portion of the universe that hopefully the later installments will be able to overcome.

2022年6月5日 评论 a review of 新蝙蝠侠 - Tells a truly fascinating Batman story. One with layered new takes on classic characters, a noir vibe thanks to an actual emphasis on the hero's detective abilities for once, and big name stars like John Turturro and Colin Farrell who are so dedicated to their roles they become unrecognizable in the best way. It's an altogether unique, original vision for a long-standing property that we've seen in countless forms over the years and therefore really needed something fresh like this to garner any interest at all these days. My enjoyment of it was very limited however by a director who, while having some novel ideas, is trying way too hard. Too hard at what you ask? Quite simply, breaking away from the established superhero blockbuster norms and creating a deeper, more thoughtful and complex experience. A task which, to put it bluntly, appears to be out of Matt Reeves' depth. A fact that's extremely evident in the numerous baffling artistic and stylistic choices. Such as how he tries to mine tension and atmosphere from a scene by having his actors take an ETERNITY to walk across a room. Don't even get me started on the intentional blurring of moments where bright red colors are used or how you can't really make out anything happening in the overlong car chase due to the heavy rain effects and excessive number of interior vehicle shots. The overall vibe they were going for here was that of a gritty, grim psychological thriller that brought to my mind hints of films I've seen like Prisoners and I Saw the Devil , where almost everyone is seriously unhinged or deranged. That proves a bar this fails to clear. Reeves and crew seem painfully unaware of how goofy the material they're working with can be. I was often left laughing at the attempts that were made to make Robert Pattinson and Paul Dano look odd and "damaged" when I should have been shaken because of how unintentionally corny they came off. The later of the two may even be guilty of overacting. This is rather embarrassing when you consider that so much of The Batman forsakes traditional action and humor with the hopes of achieving this effect, whereas Tim Burton did a far better job of reaching that goal while actively embracing them. There are many aspects of this movie that I respect and as it so happens also liked. The most notable being Zoë Kravitz who is just absolute SEX slinking around onscreen. Admirable in intent the vision may be though, the execution feels unjustifiably pretentious and desperately needed a more serious editor to trim a greater amount of the content down. Ultimately resulting in a feature that misses the mark, with me at least, by a wide margin.

2021年11月5日 评论 a review of 千尸屋3 - There's a pretty good idea here as 3 From Hell intends to take the Firefly family down to Mexico to see what chaos they can cause south of the border. Unfortunately, due to the position Rob Zombie left them in at the end of The Devil's Rejects he first has to make it believable that they can come back to create more carnage. This forces things into a start so slow it takes up half the running-time as the redneck killer clan must escape incarceration, replace Captain Spaulding who gets written out because of Sid Haig's illness (R.I.P.), and become involved in an extended torture sequence involving a prison warden's loved ones that comes off like a direct retread of the motel segment from the film's aforementioned predecessor. Of course, even when Zombie finally manages to bring the group together and sets them on the run again there is still a rather serious problem: none of the action feels inspired. There's plenty of the director's signature vulgarity and filth, but it's as if he slapped it all onscreen for a paycheck rather than the crudity being the result of having any truly creative vision. I did get a kick out of the more absurd aspects such as the bloody showdown with the satanic luchador gang in the final act, but the majority of this is flat and strained in a way I'm not used to from a filmmaker with a usually potent distinctive style. So much is just watching the villainous protagonists goof off and have a good time in a twisted mimicry of endearing road trip flicks because their creator made the mistake of thinking we actually like them. I suppose that's a reasonable assumption to have about an audience returning for a third outing with these characters, but given their irritating personalities and the appeal other brutal horror franchises have enjoyed, for example Friday the 13th or Saw , I think common-sense would dictate we're here for the grindhouse violence above all else rather than out of a genuine attachment to the monsters leaving bodies in their wake. I certainly didn't want to see them survive the vengeful son of one of their former victims who shows up once they flee the country after all. A quality worth praising is the casting of Richard Brake who evidently impressed so much on the set of 31 he was chosen to fill the hole left behind by the passing of a horror icon, which he does in another notably mesmerizing deranged fashion. The gore is also really impressive in spots. However, while the previous movie simply wasn't for me, this chapter in the chronicles of these psychopaths is a genuine misstep. A tepid mixture of halfhearted savagery and lackadaisical hang around vibes that amount to another significant step back from the standout thrills of House of 1000 Corpses while carrying with it the objectionable hints of having only been created for a payday. Hopefully the musician turned exploitation cinema maestro can get this meat wagon back on track since if this made any real money given his apparent affection for these murderous degenerates it likely won't be the last we see of the trio, and I'd rather not dread their next bloodbath.

2021年10月16日 评论 a review of 隔山有眼2 - Now here's a film with a particularly foul reputation, standing as one of only a handful of movies to receive a rare 0% on Rotten Tomatoes and being famously disowned by its creator. If you look at Wes Craven's career up to this point things had been going fairly well for the director. This did release on the tails of A Nightmare on Elm Street after all (following having been reportedly shelved for two years), which to this day is still considered one of the greatest works of horror ever conceived and rests comfortably alongside Scream as his greatest contribution to the genre. So you could pretty safely say this was his first real major screwup as there's seemingly no one out there with a kind word for it. So is this the cinematic abomination you've heard? In all honesty, not really. It was just a misguided attempt by Craven to turn his savage cult classic into a teen slasher franchise. You know what was popular in 1984? Friday the 13th . Which around this time had just released its fourth entry. One could hardly blame a cash-strapped Craven for trying to copy that formula with the hopes of setting himself up with a series of payday-granting sequels. All he had to do was tone down the more brutal aspects of the original, keep the blood, add some boobage, and come up with a cast of annoying 20-somethings to butcher. A cast that includes a blind girl, the helpful cannibal chick from the first Hills , a poor man's Andy Samberg, and a cartoon stereotype of a black guy alongside a few other characters who are too bland to remember. Robert Houston also returns as "Bobby" to further establish this as a direct continuation, but I guess they couldn't afford to keep him around for the whole thing as he only shows up in the very beginning. Nothing here is really all that bad. It's just that the new abandoned ranch setting lacks the compelling scenery of its predecessor and the violence is no longer creative or symbolizes anything so it feels extremely generic. It's biggest problem from a filmmaking standpoint is how the first-half is bogged down by flashback sequences to lengthy clips from the 1977 flick, which feel unnecessary as they do little to catch-up viewers who haven't seen it and bore the ones who have. It doesn't help either that after receiving a short, very small theatrical run it was quickly pushed out direct-to-video and on subscription television, which can clearly be seen as it looks like a made-for-TV production. If this truly is Craven's worst effort as so many people claim though, then his filmography as a whole is more enjoyable than many other's. Overly demonized, this is more a lackluster and ultimately forgettable stab taken at establishing the type of regularly incoming paychecks that he SHOULD have been getting when Freddy Krueger became a household name, rather than the atrocious dumpster fire it's known as. I'm in no way defending the movie as it's genuinely not worth seeking out unless you're a completionist. I simply think its heinous portrayal over the years has been overblown as it's honestly more mediocre than awful.

2021年8月7日 评论 a review of 糖果人2:腥风血雨 - Genuinely disappointing to see a standout horror film that had twisted frights, something to say, and an identity all its own get a follow-up that's largely a bunch of generic Halloween, trick or treat bullcrap filled to the brim with crummy jump scares like this. The whole thing feels kind of phoned in and cheap in a made-for-TV sort of way. The acting is flat across the board and Philip Glass's new score is a hollow imitation of the work he had done just three years prior. Tony Todd isn't even menacing anymore. Removing the voice filter certainly made him more audible, but at the expense of the otherworldly quality that in hindsight was crucial to making him scary. Oh, and he kills everyone in literally the exact same way every time in this outing. Oddly enough though, I think this is better written than its predecessor. The story and characters themselves aren't as interesting, but outside of the suspension of disbelief necessary to accept that a half-black girl was raised white and "no one suspected the truth," there isn't anything here that feels nonsensical or lacking an explanation. It even answered the questions I had from the first movie, such why the franchise's killer is called Candyman, all while ensuring I didn't end up with any new ones by coming up with solid reasons for how ol' Daniel Robitaille is able to come back after getting torched the last time we saw him and why the setting has moved from Chicago to Louisiana. The only thing missing from the plot is the subtext. Without it you get the feeling that all of the shots of black people in their community are just there for decoration. Even worse though is that there is a repeated jump scare where a white person notices someone black behind them and freaks out because they think it's the Candyman. I suppose you could view this as a bit of social commentary on society's distrust and demonization of African-Americans, but considering that kind of thing isn't found anywhere else in the movie I would have a hard time believing that. It comes off more as poorly thought out attempt at giving the audience a jolt. In closing, this is another case of a distinguished and creative horror flick getting an uninspired sequel with second-rate production values solely to cash in on the originals success, as opposed to them actually having a compelling or meaningful new idea for the property. The one saving grace is that it was written by Clive Barker. His work to fill the holes in the backstory of this cinematic version of his creation may even make this mandatory viewing for some fans. However, not even the lore hungry like myself will walk away completely satisfied due to how dull the surrounding content is.

2021年6月27日 评论 a review of 扎克·施奈德版正义联盟 - The DCEU and Warner Bros. handling of DC properties as a whole has been a tragicomic dumpster fire I'm strangely still invested in. When Man of Steel launched back in 2013 I wasn't a fan, but after a few years of watching what Marvel had been building on the big-screen I at least walked away excited at the potential of getting to see some of my other favorite superheroes inhabit their own MCU-style cinematic universe. Here I am 8 years later still waiting for them to work out the kinks... The first two films to follow MoS , which took nearly a full 3 years to arrive, Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad were widely ridiculed critical DISASTERS that made the entire franchise look dead on delayed arrival. A Wonder Woman standalone film did manage to restore some goodwill, but it was quickly lost again with the release of the original and still canonical Justice League . A failure of epic proportions many have blamed the lack of success on as being the result of Zack Snyder, who had largely helmed the DCEU up to that point, leaving production at some point due to a family tragedy and Joss Whedon stepping in to finish the movie. It's now clear that isn't entirely the case, but more on that in a minute. Since then WB has clearly struggled with knowing what to do with the DCEU. Largely moving away from the "shared" aspect entirely and letting the heroes have their own solo outings. The results have been decent, but still problematic. Aquaman and Shazam! have been well-received, but Birds of Prey has proved divisive and seemingly not even the most radical of feminists rallied behind Princess Diana's return in 1984 . The only things we know for sure are coming next are another Suicide Squad that's not exactly a sequel or a reboot and maybe a Dwayne Johnson led Black Adam movie that I haven't really seen anyone get all that excited over, with standalones for Barry Allen and Cyborg remaining in development hell as directors repeatedly join and abandon the projects left and right. There's no indication these characters will ever link up again, Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck (Superman and Batman respectively) have reportedly abandoned ship all together, and even more damning is that Warner Bros. has begun to produce films featuring the same heroes and villains that are completely unconnected. Which brings us to the "Snyder Cut." Following all the rumors that all the footage for Zack Snyder's nearly completed Justice League still existed after Whedon assumed control, changed the tone, and added in his own new material a movement similar to the one that got everyone's favorite anthropomorphic hedgehog redesigned for Sonic the Hedgehog began and WB actually let Snyder release his original vision in all its uncut 4-hour glory. Spending a lot of money on a non-canon piece of fanservice that still leaves their ultimate plans for the DCEU up in the air. The results are an improvement to be sure, but this isn't likely to be a vindication for anyone other than Snyder himself and the particularly delusional members of the fanbase who are still trying to convince everyone that the 31-minutes of footage added in the "Ultimate Edition" of Batman v Superman somehow magically fixes everything wrong with that film. That's because it reveals some uncomfortable truths about just how inherently flawed Justice League was to begin with. Make no mistake, this isn't a super long director's cut. It's an entirely different super long movie. A lot of the scenes and of course the story are the same, but are handled in distinctive ways. Things like the moodier score and Snyder's trademark visual style give scenes and moments a darker tone. Such as how the villains look like they were pulled straight off of the cover art for a metal album. The narrative has also been greatly expanded allowing every little idea room to breathe and be fully fleshed out. We can now see exactly where exactly Snyder was intending to go with these heroes, which unfortunately comes with the tradeoff of also having clearer knowledge of the mistakes he made trying to get them there as quickly as possible. Rather than acting as a film that works on its own while hinting at the bigger threat planned for later on down the road the way the first Avengers did for Thanos, this is essentially an overly long trailer for what might have been a pretty sweet adaptation of the Injustice video game. Nowhere is that more evident than with Steppenwolf. Who, yes, is portrayed more menacingly here, but is still uninteresting on his own and only serves to constantly remind viewers that Snyder had planned to bring Darkseid to the table at some point, likely in the very next sequel. It makes you wonder why Snyder didn't just go ahead and make that movie instead. It's not like he hadn't already cut necessary corners to get this far anyways. Which is why Flash and Cyborg get introduced and established here rather than in their own solo origin flicks; something that disrupts the flow of the story. Speaking of those two, they really exemplify how the whole team dynamic is handled a little better here as they both play a more integral role in saving the day. So now only Batman, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman are useless. Something that makes the special theme music that plays every time the Amazonian so much as looks in a different direction during a fight seem really silly after a while given how little she's actually able to do against Steppenwolf. They all still come off as inconsequential when compared to Superman though who, after hours of his peers getting slapped around, defeats the villain in a hilariously anticlimatic and one-sided beatdown that makes it hard to take the other members of the League seriously going forward because of how easily outshined they were. I think it's time we stop demonizing Whedon for his version. Yeah, his changes and additions were bad, but it's clear now that what he had to work with wasn't all that great in the first place. Most of the flaws found in his take are still present here, only marginally more tolerable. Even now without any sort of discernable direction for it to go the DCEU is probably better off without Snyder as at least WB has the potential to salvage things and with the necessary groundwork he was either too uninterested or unwilling to lay. Because while his Justice League is a better movie, it's still not a good movie. Oh, and Jared Leto's Joker is still the worst thing ever.

2021年6月10日 评论 a review of X战警3:背水一战 - The change in directors between this movie and the previous two is something that can be felt almost immediately. The opening scene where a young boy mutilates himself in an effort to hide his mutation certainly carries the same kind of dark gravitas Bryan Singer brought to the franchise prior, but from the action sequence with a soundtrack (that remains inappropriate throughout) and tone more befitting of the Star Wars prequels than X-Men that follows to everything that occurs afterwards, it's evident that this closer to the trilogy is missing the qualities that truly made its predecessors so good. This is the rare case where more action and less plotting would have been beneficial. On top of not forcing the viewers to have to suffer through so many long-winded conversations, it could have helped cover the fact that the writing is not as smart as it thinks it is. It's true that the much loved X2 also struggled with being a little too chatty, but it made up for it by using all of that dialog to explore it's characters and conflict further, which in turn added a lot of extra depth. Last Stand certainly has a wonderful premise that can be used to draw comparisons to any number of real world acts of discrimination, but it's all very surface level. At no point do Ratner or the script dive into the motivations of its heroes and villains or the effects of their struggle. While this can be somewhat forgiven due to the extensive work done on this front in the Singer entries, it still feels like it's cheapening out in a way. The "Dark Phoenix" storyline being adapted here probably could have been left on the cutting room floor. The only thing it really contributes are a bunch of character deaths that wreck the team dynamic. With so many familiar faces getting the axe and a handful of those remaining like Iceman and Mystique having their roles reduced, this largely becomes the Storm, Wolverine, and Magneto show with a heavy emphasis placed on the latter two. There are a lot of fan favorites that have been brought in from the comics to fill out the cast, but these new additions are some very bad takes. What they did to Juggernaut ranks just below the butchery done to Deadpool in Origins . Also, where the heck is Nightcrawler? His absence is never explained. When the final battle finally arrives it proves worth the wait. It's big, chaotic, and full of spectacle. Showing that while the subtext and nuance are gone, the blockbuster thrills are not. It won't make up for the writing deficiencies for everyone though, as unlike Origins it saves all the excitement for the final act rather than spreading it throughout its running-time. Plus, it's no secret that the themes and metaphors are what had set the rest of the series apart from the other superhero films of that era. So without them the film is undeniably missing something. Whether or not that will hinder your enjoyment just depends on why you watch these.

2020年8月30日 评论 a review of 新变种人 - Okay Hollywood, no more superhero-horror movie hybrids. You had The Crow . You had the first Hellboy . You even had Blade 1 and 2. Unfortunately, every other attempt you've made at marrying these two genres together has proven to be pretty disastrous, and this latest effort is no exception. To be fair, The New Mutants does have a GREAT premise. Take a bunch of teenagers struggling with the unfortunate consequences of their newly awoken powers, lock them in a psychiatric facility with a doctor operating under the guise of wanting to "help them," and then give one of them the ability to literally bring all of their fears to life. It's a borderline brilliant idea, but the execution is so awful that only occasional and very brief flashes of the excellence that otherwise could have been ever show through. The lead actress can't act, its most interesting character (Magik) is underdeveloped, and the way it transitions from serious moments to ones where the cast are behaving like you would expect a bunch of horny, damaged pubescents to out of nowhere leads to a lack of tonal cohesion between a lot of the scenes. It has all the right elements to be the perfect millennial/Gen Z cape-and-costume flick, but never gives any of them enough room to breathe causing to whole thing to feel more like a janky pilot for another inevitably disappointing CW show rather than a well-executed proof of concept. Case in point, these teens have some of the coolest powers I've seen in a comic book adaptation since Bloodshot , but they don't really get to use them outside of the admittedly exciting final battle. Each character is compelling and seemingly layered in their own unique ways, but aren't explored much beyond the surface level. The plot also ultimately ends up going nowhere as it saves the major developments and inevitable showdown with the real big baddies for a sequel that we now know doesn't have a chance of getting made. I enjoyed this movie the most when it was trying to scare me. It's actually quite effectively creepy at certain points. Things like the smiley face men made my skin crawl showing that Josh Boone could have some potential as a horror filmmaker should he decide to go further in that direction at some point in the future. Which makes his upcoming remake of Stephen King's The Stand have some appeal to me whereas it otherwise didn't. However, given how strongly Magik's backstory ties into this side of things it only makes the fact that they sidelined it all the more frustrating. Like Spawn , Venom , and so many others before it, the final entry in Fox's X-Men universe is a misfire. Largely because it squanders so many of its most promising aspects more than anything. I can't think of another film I've seen that fails to capitalize on or sometimes even recognize its greatest strengths in the same way this one does. Which made me walk out of that theater feeling like I had seen where things could have gone right and ultimately disappointed with what we got instead.

2020年8月22日 评论 a review of 街头霸王 - Quick, change the channel! I must admit, I have next to no experience with the Street Fighter games. I've only ever touched the Tekken crossover, and I didn't stick with it for very long. However, the series is so legendary that as a gamer I've picked up enough information on it through indirect means to safely be able to tell you that this film adaptation is a poor representation of the franchise, as well as just a lackluster movie in general. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the thing that's kept people coming back to pick up their controllers and throw more hadoukens at each other over the years has been the hyper-muscular fighters themselves and the wild displays of martial arts you can do with them, rather than whatever sort of plot was cooked up. So the way this movie focuses so much on its story while saving almost all of the action for the end shows that nobody involved really understood the appeal of the property they were working on, or at the very least had no idea how to translate it to the screen. Likely a combination of both. I understand that filmmaking requires the final product to have a stronger emphasis on storytelling than the video game industry ever will, but Paul W.S. Anderson showed just how far having a simple premise carry the majority of the narrative weight can get you in a video game based action movie so long as the combat takes center stage, and he completely forgot the blood! Of course, the fights also have to be good too. Unfortunately, here they are not. The amount of view-obscuring cuts that were edited in whenever people start trading blows acts as a obvious and ineffective means of trying to hide the fact that Jean Claude Van Damme was the only actual martial artist on set. The writing is also really bad. It doesn't even get fanservice right. You'll see plenty of fan-favorite characters, but with the exception of Ming-Na Wen and Andrew Bryniarski as Chun-Li and Zangief respectively, all of them are horribly, horribly miscast. At no point will you see them perform any of their signature moves either. An undercurrent of humor is all this film has going for it. There were a few moments and one-liners that had me genuinely cracking up. Plus, I always kind of admire this type of cinema that doesn't take itself too seriously. Fully embracing its own stupidity with a somewhat straight face for the sole purpose of entertaining the audience with schlocky thrills and a knowing wink. Especially when it comes with a side of '90s cheese like this one does. That being said, Street Fighter: The Movie tested even my patience. Meaning the best advice I can give you in regards to this one is to go watch Mortal Kombat again.

2020年6月2日 评论 a review of 尸体派对:迷失的舞步 - Recently I picked up a copy of Corpse Party: Blood Drive for my beloved PS Vita only to find out that it's the third chapter in one of those rare horror game series that actually tells one continuous story, as opposed to the likes of Resident Evil or Silent Hill where each entry is connected through things like the setting, imagery, or mechanics, but are largely their own self-contained tales. So in order to ensure that I'm not completely lost while playing it and avoid adding to my already massive backlog of games with the earlier titles in the process, I've decided to check out the franchise's anime offerings. The first of which is this 11-minute prequel OVA. It's primarily focused on exploring the character's relationships. Mainly by going over who has a crush on who. The problem is that it's so brief and the interactions so inconsequential that you'd have to be among the most obsessive members of the fanbase to find any sort of value here. I have a hard time believing this enriches or deepens the overarching narrative in any way, shape, or form. The most interesting content it has to offer is it's depiction of the original Heavenly Host Elementary murders. It's a shocking, disturbing, and extremely gory sequence. However, in order to witness it in it's full glory you need to track down the hard to find uncensored version. Doing so comes with a trade-off though, as watching anything beyond the deaths may cause your FBI agent to put you on a registered sex offender list. For whatever reason there's a scene early on where one of the protagonists has his little sister barge in on him while he's in the bath, completely nude herself, and practically demand to be allowed to "wash his body." Not only is this grossly incestuous in nature, but they had the audacity to fully depict her naked body to boot. Animated or not, that's pedophilia in my book and absolutely disgusting. This is immediately followed by another bit of tasteless fan service where a young lady is repeatedly groped in a non-consensual manner by another girl who's relationship to her is undefined. It's not nearly as egregious, but still very creepy. Were this whole thing not bordering on degenerate fetish porn I might have been a little more forgiving as it's just more pointless than anything. I really hope the Tortured Souls mini-series isn't bogged down by this kind of stuff too, because I'm really enjoying the twisted narrative of the video game I'm playing and would love to experience its predecessors in this easier and faster to digest manner before getting too far into it. Anyways, sorry Corpse Party fanatics, but I think this footage could have stayed missing.

2019年10月17日 评论 a review of 安娜贝尔3:回家 - After the total snoozefest that was the first Annabelle , the Conjuring Universe's spin-off sub-series managed to redeem itself with Creation . David Sandberg put on his best James Wan impersonation and created a slow-burn frightfest that explodes into an full-on nightmare in its final act, and is backed up by a narrative and cast of characters that are almost as good as the ones you'll find in the two main Conjuring films. Gary Dauberman tried to do that exact same thing here, but his story and scares just aren't as strong. Annabelle takes her sweet time unpacking when she gets home, so don't expect her to settle back into her routine of freaking people out right away. The film drags for a while as we're introduced to its stars. Normally I would praise a horror movie for taking the time to flesh out its characters, but with the exception of the Warren's daughter they're just one-dimensional and uninteresting teenagers. Spending time with them simply isn't any fun, especially when one of them only exists to bring us the stupidest and least funny reoccurring joke ever conceived. They're also the kind of white people that will have non-white people yelling "WHITE PEOPLE!" at the screen in disbelief. When Dauberman does finally decide to capitalize on the film's excellent premise of having everything in the Warren's artifacts room go off at once it becomes a much more entertaining experience. It lacks an identity of its own though. The scare tactics used are the exact same ones you'll find in any of the other Conjuring Universe films and the titular antagonist ends up somewhat lost amongst all the other demons unleashed in the movie. You'll still get your jumps and jolts, but not in any ways you haven't seen before. At least the soul stealing demon behind Annabelle is just as terrifying as ever. Comes Home may be a sign that it's time to shakeup the Conjuring formula already. At the very least it's a reminder of how vital the story and characters have been to this franchise's success. Without them the most noteworthy aspects of this third outing with the evil possessed doll are that it plays off of the shared universe concept in the biggest ways so far by including the Warrens (if only briefly), appears to set up several more spin-offs, and that it is better than the first Annabelle . Other than that it's the cinematic equivalent of waiting 2+ hours in line for a haunted house that ends up being mediocre.

2018年10月25日 评论 a review of 许愿 - If there's one thing this movie gets right it's the cast. Shannon Purser, Ki Hong Lee, Ryan Phillippe, Sydney Park and more. All very charismatic. Towering high of above each and every one of them though is the star of the show, Joey King. No longer the ridiculously talented little girl we once knew, she's grown into an incredibly gifted young actress. So much so that I wish there was a better movie around her. Wish Upon puts a gruesome spin on a typical high-school movie formula. The protagonist finds a means of making all her wildest fantasies come true. Popularity, her dream crush, a lavish lifestyle, and a cooler dad all become hers in the blink of an eye. Only rather than finding out all of these things she thought she wanted don't actually bring her happiness, she instead must deal with the fact that getting everything she's ever wanted is causing people to die. The deaths themselves are rather tepid. As if director John R. Leonetti was afraid to do anything really gruesome because he knew we don't actually want to see most of these people meet a violent end. The thing that's allowed gory horror series like Final Destination to succeed is that we don't really care about anyone onscreen. We may not necessarily dislike them, but there's a certain detachment that makes it easy to revel in their inevitable demise. When someone gets killed here it's just disappointing to see them go. I would have preferred this had it not been a horror movie, but instead a traditional teen flick. It would have been derivative as heck, but at least the better portion of this film would have been front and center. It's kind of fun to watch King awkwardly navigate high school with familiar tropes. She and the rest of the cast almost make this worth watching. Of course I may be a little biased. Ever since she scared the crap out of me in The Conjuring by telling me about the man behind the door I became something of a Joey King fan boy. I don't really think you can deny that the girl can act though. The movie may be mediocre, but she's just as fantastic as ever.

2018年10月14日 评论 a review of 毒液:致命守护者 - This may be a Marvel character, but this sure ain't the MCU. Ruben Fleischer hasn't made a good movie since Zombieland . Although I will admit that I laughed more at 30 Seconds or Less than I should have. It shouldn't be this hard to make a superhero horror movie. We've had a few successes over the years with the likes of The Crow , Hellboy , and maybe a few others. Venom is more along the lines of Spawn though. Gets too caught up with humor. Even worse is that it fundamentally misunderstands the character. I hear a lot of people criticizing this for being "tonally inconsistent." I don't really agree with that. To me it seemed like the tone was steadily focused on being lighthearted entertainment throughout. Just another product of the superhero craze. Which of course doesn't do the character justice. The reason so many were excited for and potentially interested in a Venom *movie was because he would bring something different to the table. A darker, more villainous alternative to the MCU films. Instead we got something that tries to emulate the same kind of laughs and big-blockbuster thrills that Disney is using to conquer box-office sales multiple times per year with only the briefest, fleeting glimpses at the people-munching monster we were supposed to get. An approach that might not have been too bad had the movie been better made. The action is pretty generic. We get a car chase and a bunch of guys with guns getting thrown around. Occasionally someone will get their head bitten off. Nothing too exciting. Even the big symbiote battle is kind of lame because of how blurry it all is. The CGI is really dodgy. Something is also off with Venom's design. His head is fine, but the body looks weird. Not a fan. His enemy "Riot" looks so much cooler. A foe who is brought to life by Riz Ahmed in a very memorable, charismatic, and arrogant performance. There's never a dull moment though because things keep moving. *Venom rushes from plot point to plot point so the time flies by. As a matter of a fact a meaty portion of it's 2h 20m running time is dedicated to the credits. Not the kind you sit through to see the stinger either. This naturally hurts the development of things a lot. Like how the symbiote goes from "I own you" to "you changed me" in the course of what feels like 20 minutes. There's a buddy element between Eddie and his extraterrestrial hanger-on that never feels fleshed out. It's also never really explained how Eddie is able to keep the suit from killing him. I was able to intuit that he's protecting his body by keeping the symbiote fed or maybe Venom itself just decided to stop gradually feasting on his organs, but it's never something the movie addresses. It just stops being a danger to him at a certain point. I also think it's odd how his fiancé immediately dumped him when she lost her job (admittedly his fault) without any feeling. Just completely moved on with her life to the point where a mere six months later we learn that she's been seeing a guy long enough for him to have a key to her apartment. Maybe her and Eddie had some other problems, but it certainly didn't seem that way considering they were about to get married . Then we're supposed to believe she starts helping him when he gets the symbiote because she still cares for him a little? Uh honey, if you were capable of human emotions then you wouldn't have completely annihilated your relationship with him like you did. That's just cold. Why does he want her back again? The biggest flaw with the movie though is that this isn't really Venom. I like how it portrayed the duality of the character. Both Eddie and Venom are in constant communication and have differing degrees of control. However their dynamic is far too cute. Silly buddy comedy stuff that's good for some chuckles, but is a poor fit for the anti-hero. What the movie fails to understand is that Venom's appeal comes from more than just his appearance. There's a real tragedy to his story that made his rise from pure villain to sometimes hero so compelling. In the comics Brock was guy who thought he lost everything, but then found out he had more to loose after coming contact with an alien parasite. He thought it was great at first, but it took him down an even darker path than the one he was already on. It used his desire for revenge to manipulate him and gained control over his life. None of that is found here. The guy goes through some bad stuff, but then the symbiote comes along and makes everything better. It removes all of the danger out of his bonding with an alien entity with it's own dark motives. Instead making it look like something you would really want to do because you would quickly become best friends and get superpowers. This is a waste of a great Tom Hardy performance. A mediocre superhero flick that I maybe could have forgiven for only briefly touching on the body horror elements had it actually felt like a movie about Venom. I wasn't even bothered by the PG-13 rating because the character mattered more and it was totally possible to do him (them?) right without gratuitous violence. Instead they played it safe and made him your typical superhero. Surrounding him with predicable humor and action that is behind the standards set by the likes of the MCU and even the DCEU to a certain degree. I was never bored so I can't say don't watch it, but the Venom fan in me was sorely disappointed.**

2018年9月29日 评论 a review of 使徒保罗 - Beaten bodies, bloody hands, and corpses burning in the streets. This is a lot darker and more grim in tone than anything else from Affirm Films. The movie draws a parallel between the events of Rome during the reign of Nero and the things that are happening today. The message is to stay strong in your faith when things are spiraling out of control because of those in power. It does so in the form of a character study of Paul during his final days. As interesting and potentially relevant as this idea could have been, the potential is squandered by how unexciting the material ends up being. The acting is generally pretty good. I just had no reason to care about these characters. Nothing really happens but a bunch of dull conversations in some great looking (for the budget) locations. It's depictions of persecution offer the occasional glimpses of life through shock value. It never pushes the envelope too far though. Most of the more violent displays of torture take place off-screen. As an analysis of today's current political and social climate that offers an alternative way of combating a system you don't agree with rather than rioting in the streets or acting like a moron on social media, it's somewhat successful. As a source of entertainment however, it fails rather miserably. I applaud the continued effort of trying to make faith-based films subvert expectations by exploring new directions, but this was boring.

2026年1月28日 评论 a review of 活埋前女友 - There's a pretty good concept here and an overall B-movie feel that kind of makes you want to like it. Overall though it all just feels way too phoned in. For a horror-rom-com, it's surprisingly lacking in horror, romance, and comedy. That's not to say it's a readily unfunny movie. It's just that none of the laughs it does try really elicit any sort of reaction. So it's not like these jokes are particularly bad, they just aren't particularly funny. No, Burying the Ex's biggest problem is that there just isn't anything going on. It's pulse is flatter than that of Yelchin's undead girlfriend. The only gore comes in right at the end. The majority of the movie is just watching Yelchin talk to his brother about dumping his girl and then not doing it because he's got no spine. Every now and then Alexandra Daddario shows up to hit on him. The romance angle also falls flat as well. Daddario's character just sort of follows around our sad sack lead for no apparent reason other than they share some common interests and she hasn't had sex in a while (the movie explains that). There's no actual romance going on. It's also worth pointing out that the main character actually doesn't have things that bad with his "ex" in the first place. Yeah, she was controlling and there obviously wasn't any connection there, but she was hardly the girlfriend from hell. At least not before she died that is. Burying the Ex is sort of a bumbling corpse of a movie. It just sort of shambles along with no real purpose other than to eat. Only it's food is our time rather than our brains. Given the lackluster results I'd say we're all better off not feeding this one. You can tell there wasn't much effort going into putting it together. As a result it's watchable, but there's no real point in doing so. This ex can stay buried.
