A messy retelling of the hit anime's first season. It gets the style right and the action is awesome, but it fails to do the storyline justice. That's because it jumbles everything from the Agent of the Shinigami arc together in an awkward manner that hurts the pacing and will leave anyone not familiar with the source material very confused.

I got a kick out of seeing key moments recreated in live-action so it's got some visual fan-service going for it, but with the character relationships and overall lore of the series going underdeveloped it's only real value is as a cheesy Japanese B-movie rather than a true fan pleaser with the ability to bring in new devotees. The over-the-top action packs a lot of destruction and spectacle. Not unlike most of today's superhero movies. The rampant overacting and absurdist humor ensure that there's plenty to laugh at. Even if not all of it translates well from the manga or across cultural barriers. Like how main character Ichigo's dad is openly abusive to him, but apparently they actually have a cool relationship. His physical assaults on his teenage son are meant to be slapstick. Something that doesn't quite work outside of animation.

After watching this I'm convinced that it is possible to adapt an arc of Bleach into a roughly two-hour movie with all of the emotion and depth intact. The writers just weren't up to the task. A shame because it both looks and sounds the part. The punk rock soundtrack is fantastic and fits the tone of the anime perfectly. The cast is also very likable. In the end though all it really offers are some snazzy swordfights and one or two exciting showdowns with monstrous "Hollows." This means it's likely to disappoint all but the most forgiving of hardcore fans and can only hope for a cult following at best outside of Japan.

Not sure why this one of getting a pass when it does a lot of same things that have caused people to complain about everything post- Aliens . Fede Álvarez did direct the heck out of it, I LOVE the emphasis on practical effects over CGI, and the final act features a creation that might be the most horrifying the franchise has churned out thus far. Even if it does bring back some unpleasant memories of the Newborn… The problem is it just doesn’t get the Xenomorphs right. Kind of like the fourth film they’ve (yes, there’s more than one here) been robbed of all menace, coming off as generic creature-feature fodder meant to deliver some schlocky thrills until they get blown away by the protagonist. None of what made this iconic sci-fi monster once so fascinating and terrifying back when it was first introduced to audiences in 1979 can be found.  Then there are the characters… Geez, such an unappealing bunch. Caily Spaeny is no Sigourney Weaver. The rest of the cast, on top of being obnoxious and weirdly too young feeling to lead a story like this, are clearly only there to ensure there’s a bodycount when the credits roll. Doesn’t help how predictable this all is. You can accurately guess how basically every moment is going to play out before it happens, and not because of all the callbacks either. Which, yes, are as bad as you’ve heard. The use of maybe Ripley’s most famous line quite frankly painful to witness.  Look, Álvarez packed enough of his trademark gory, gross out spectacle to keep me watching (even if he totally missed how that stuff isn’t the point of these flicks), and gosh dang it do I respect that he alongside co-writer Rodo Sayagues actually tied the plot into Prometheus  too. That’s a big win for us lore nerds. Overall, this ain’t it though. If we aren’t counting the second AvP  movie, this is easily the property’s weakest feature-length outing for me to date.

It’s a schlocky mess. Full of blood, boobs, college kids being a bunch of amusing horny morons, ridiculous plot twists, and what feels like more Pinhead than the prior three films combined. I was kind of blown away by the cast here a bit. You’ve got Lance Henriksen and most surprisingly Henry Cavill! The latter of whom might be the star of the show. Genuinely wish we could get more performances this lively and energetic from the guy, as he’s been a straight up block of wood in everything else I’ve seen him in. Another noteworthy, albeit nowhere near as prestigious member of the cast is Khary Payton who ranks as a very close second when it comes to stealing all the scenes. I’m sure the majority of viewers will recognize him as Ezekiel from AMC’s The Walking Dead, but real ones will know him as the voice of Cyborg on the legendary 2000s animated Teen Titans show. Look, the ending is a bit of a bummer (only the two least likable characters survive) and I totally get that I should be outraged that this is only a further bastardization of what the Hellraiser movies started off as and should have continued to be. The franchise had already gone down the crapper WELL before this however, and already knowing ahead of time that Hellworld wasn’t going to be the entry to right the ship, I’m just happy I got a little stupid B-horror entertainment out of the experience.

2023年5月29日 评论 a review of 动物之森 - Cute. Inoffensive. Kind of boring. I will say, it gets Animal Crossing very right. You’re primarily watching a young girl move into town, work for Tom Nook, and have silly, nonsense conversations with the other villagers. All the while a boy of the same age can be seen running around in the background chasing bugs, making Pitfall Seed traps for the locals to get caught in, and generally just being a nuisance to represent how people actually play these games (What? I know that’s not only me!). There’s a vague kind of charm to it and small stuff like seeing a character make an outfit that everyone else starts immediately wearing after it’s sold in the local store brought back fond memories of my own personal experiences with the franchise, but it’s dull and not the least bit exciting to observe happen to someone else. The thing that’s made the series so popular despite being somewhat fairly mundane in terms of what you actually do is that genuine feeling players receive of carving a place for yourself in, building relationships with, and eventually belonging to the quirky little communities found in each entry. You simply can’t get that from a movie. This is the equivalent of sitting through some YouTuber’s LP where all they do is deliver packages and offer commentary on how “they’d really like to try their own cherry pie one day!” that they for whatever reason never cook (hands down the strangest element of the plot). Things do pick up near the end when the aliens weirdly show up and I admittedly got slightly emotional at the part where the girl’s animal friend leaves without saying goodbye, but that 87min runtime goes by so slowly that there are legitimately bad video game adaptations that I would rather rewatch than this.

2023年4月1日 评论 a review of 谋杀疑案2 - Only the third sequel of Adam Sandler’s career. For whatever reason the former SNL star and box-office king has always seemed particularly averse to reprising roles. It’s not hard to see why he would be up for stepping back into this one though. On top of getting to make out with Jennifer Anniston, pre- Hubie Halloween the first Murder Mystery was easily the best of Happy Madison and Netflix’s non-stand-up collaborations. Unfortunately, unlike his Grown Ups and Hotel Transylvania follow-ups this is a step backwards rather than an improvement. There are some funny moments and lines scattered throughout, but for the most part a lot of the humor simply fails to land with much effect. The script is clearly comprised of weaker material, and not just in the comedy department either. The actual whodunnit itself is messier and far less interesting. The whole thing appears to be trying to get by on the spectacle of its locations and more action-oriented thrills. Each setting is gorgeous and rife with lavish details. I honestly couldn’t tell at times if what I was looking at was real or CGI, a praise to the film’s visual effects team no doubt. As ridiculous and unbelievable as it is to watch the 56 year old Adam Sandler slug it out with armed, highly trained criminals I was actually impressed by how cool and well-choreographed these fight sequences ended up being despite the required suspension of disbelief. Still, when the laughter quantity is this low it’s hard to walk away fully satisfied. It’s not unwatchable or anything, but even for the most hardcore Sandler fans like myself this is entirely skippable. Ever since breaking out into movie stardom the leading man has been accused by his critics of resorting to the laziest jokes possible. I imagine that argument has only gotten stronger in the streaming service portion of his career. Personally though, I think the weaker outings we’ve been receiving from him over the past few years are less due to a lack of effort on anyone involved’s part, and more the unfortunate consequence of he and his usual cohorts genuinely running out of clever ideas. As a result, currently the best murder mystery of 2023 so far continues to be  The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog .

2022年9月29日 评论 a review of 芒斯特一家 - You know, no matter how you look at it this was an odd choice of movie for Rob Zombie to make considering his previous work. The " Hellbilly " metalhead has made a name for himself behind the camera as a purveyor of vulgar, grindhouse horror and now all of the sudden he's dealing in family-friendly throwbacks to wholesome '60s sitcoms? Even stranger is that this was reportedly a passion project of his. One where he could provide the origin story for the titular monster family that he always wanted to by showing things like Herman's creation, how he and Lily met, their acquisition of "Spot," and what exactly led to the inhuman ménage living the suburban life on Mockingbird Lane. Now, I'm not familiar with the show. I mean, I may have caught a rerun on TV Land or something as a child, but can't recall anything about it and therefore went into this with no prior attachments to the property, uninitiated, and unsure of what to expect. My mother who I watched this with on the other hand grew up with the source material, and she quite liked this movie as a result. My opinions on it however are a bit more mixed. The overall cheap look doesn't bother me, as it was an intentional choice on Zombie's part in an effort to capture a retro, low-budget schlock horror vibe and it honestly wouldn't have been so ugly had he been allowed to shoot the film in black & white like he originally planned. Plus, the studio's refusal to let him do it arguably worked out for the better by forcing a hyper-colorful visual style in response that hearkens back to some of House of 1000 Corpses ' neon-drenched brilliance in a way I haven't seen from the director's other projects I've experienced thus far. No, my problem is that the feature's prequel nature means it can't mine humor from the same premise and therefore its creator must come up with comedic material on his own. Which is an issue because to be honest I don't think ol' Rob is a very funny dude. Like, I could probably talk slasher flicks and headbanging tunes with him all day, but we wouldn't be swapping jokes. I've appreciated the man's eye for gore and depravity in the past, yet he's never been able to make me laugh. There's the occasional good one-liner or moment here, but for the most part a lot of the gags fall flat (I particularly don't get the bizarre musical segments). At least until the characters finally leave Transylvania and move into the house and its accompanying material that carried them for 70 episodes back in the day. Even my mom who appeared to be enjoying herself the entire time hadn't been chuckling much before that. That's when this started to click with me and I began to see the potential of the concept. It actually got me really interested in checking out the now decades old show. So as a standalone film this doesn't offer much, but as an extended pilot to a promising looking series? Well, it has some actual value as that.

2022年2月26日 评论 a review of 敦威治恐怖事件 - A highly flawed H.P. Lovecraft adaptation for reasons of age, budget, and clumsy direction that still has some qualities that make it worth checking out. The action primarily consists of watching an awkward, bookish, and virginal college coed get manipulated by a creepy small-town cultist with a twisted family history. This is an area where the bad acting should have been a huge problem as it's hard to believe Dean Stockwell could seduce anyone given how unsettlingly he plays his role. It only ends up adding to the tragedy of the situation though by really selling how, despite Sandra Dee being far from unattractive, much of a lonely loser her character must be to fall for his ruse. The more eldritch horrors of the Cthulhu mythos rear their heads most strongly in the creature feature of a final act. While certainly more traditionally exciting than anything that comes beforehand, this portion of the film suffers a bit from the constraints of the time period as well as likely the amount of money supporting it. We never actually get to see the monster so moments like its rampage through a forest are limited to simply watching people fall over while stock growl sound effects play and bright neon colors flash onscreen. It's that kind of stuff, along with how drawn out some scenes (particularly the occult ritual ones) can be and the hallucination sequences where it's not always clear who is even having the visions, that makes the whole experience feel amateurish and cheap. Still, the movie is fairly engaging regardless, and for more than just the already inherently interesting nature Lovecraftian fiction has to begin with. The psychedelic visuals create some legitimately haunting imagery and lend a sense of artistic merit to the project. There's also far more sexuality than I would have expected from something that came out back in 1970. I mean, heck, Gidget pops out a freaking titty. You're going to need a particularly high appreciation for horror that is both old and by today's standards outdated as this doesn't hold up to the same degree as other aged alternatives I've seen like The Legend of Hell House or even the original 1956 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers do, but I'd say it doesn't deserve the fate of being allowed to completely disappear from our collective memory with the passage of time quite yet.

2022年2月18日 评论 a review of 德州电锯杀人狂 - You know what the dumbest trend in modern horror is? These legacy sequels in long-running franchises that retcon all of the other previous follow-ups inexplicably having the same name as the original film they're intended to serve as a direct continuation of. Seriously, I'm SUPER excited to now have the exact problem with Texas Chainsaw that I do with Halloween , where when I tell people I've watched it they have to ask "which one?" because they don't know if I'm talking about the first, the reboot/remake, or the "new one." For real, when this inevitably happens again for something like, I don't know, Friday the 13th or A Nightmare on Elm Street would it kill someone involved to come up with a subtitle to help avoid confusion please? Anyways, as for the actual quality of this thing, the whole point of these projects is to sort of course correct a brand that, after getting off to a fantastic start, gradually lost its way with each passing installment. With that being the case, you'd think this would have done a better job of not repeating the mistakes of the prior successors. Yeah, Tobe Hooper's classic was a sick, twisted little film, but what makes it so uncomfortable for so many even after all these years is more than just the torment its characters suffer. It's the underlying context of the deranged lunacy and savagery lurking on the fringes of society. At least as far as I've seen, everything that followed managed to overlook that while going heavy on the blood and violence. Exactly like this does. Still, while it misses what should have been the whole point of its creation, it's hard to fault this too much as a slasher. It's about as deep as a puddle and brings nothing terribly creative to the table, but it's got the gore, grime, and a few entertaining scenarios. Honestly, the aspect that's going to bug people the most is the new political tinge. The movie blatantly acknowledges the U.S.' present day struggle between warring ideals of change and keeping with the status quo. There are those who are going to take issue with how the protagonists mock conservatives for their guns, Confederate flags, and vehicular emissions. Meanwhile, others will be bothered by how most of the victims are socially progressive, cancel culturing liberals. There's enough here for you to come up with your own take on whether this leans more to the right or the left. Personally, I think it delivers an "everyone sucks" mentality and ridicules both halves. So what people will find offensive is that it doesn't pick a side. Their side. Ultimately, this effectively fails to pay homage to the 1974 version's legacy. Yeah, they brought its heroine Sally back, but couldn't recapture its meaning or significance. Instead simply giving viewers another generic slaughter flick to add to the pile. Not entirely an awful thing as it means there are still a nice amount of grisly thrills to enjoy, but if you've been fed up with everything else this property has offered over the past two or so decades then this is entirely skippable.

2022年1月16日 评论 a review of 地表惊旅 - This might have just convinced me to start watching movie trailers again. So much of In the Earth 's other promotional material was/is misleading. Things such as its "Nature is a Force of Evil" tagline, the various synopses you can find out there that say things like "as the forest comes to life around them," and even the alternative poster that sees a plant growing up into the nose of actress Ellora Torchia paint the picture of a biological nightmare akin to the Annihilation adaptation we should have gotten back in 2018. What we were actually given instead though is a cult horror flick where our protagonists get tormented by a deranged weirdo with some serious old-world religious fanatical issues, which while not terrible is nowhere near as intriguing as what it was implied to be offering. Born during the first year and out of the frustrations of our modern pandemic era, the film tells the story of a world ravaged by its own virus. It explores the effects of isolation on the human mind and the things people will be willing to latch onto no matter how illogical or untested if it comes with any sort of promise of relief from their stresses and fears. While it's cool to see something that encapsulates and plays on so many of our present day anxieties as we're still in the midst of being afflicted by them, the film's timeliness is a bit of a double-edged sword. Reportedly scripted and filmed in a mere two weeks, the project's spur-of-the-moment nature makes it simultaneously both impressive and half-baked. The science at the core of the plot shows signs of depth, but is ultimately brought down by it's lack of exposition and explanation behind character's actions. Meanwhile the hallucinogenic visuals and coarse synth soundtrack craft one heck of an atmosphere that sadly only feigns the presence of the supernatural without anything of actual terror manifesting to show for it. A somewhat unrelated complaint, but this may also be the sole time I've had to watch a movie where everyone spoke English with the subtitles on because a portion of the cast's accents were too thick to understand. Joel Fry is borderline unintelligible throughout. In the Earth deserves some praise for what writer and director Ben Wheatley was able to cook up in such a brief period. There's always something engaging to look at and listen to due to the unique stylistic flourishes. Yet, while I'm willing to admit part of my disappointment stems from what I expected to be here without having looked at any of the pre-release footage available beforehand, the final product wasn't fleshed out enough to fully engage me with what it did provide regardless. It's a compelling idea that was fast-tracked to capitalize on the legitimate day-to-day struggles we're call facing in this very moment, leaving it short off the necessary development that could have made it truly impactful and with me wishing it had been more.

2021年12月18日 评论 a review of 蜘蛛侠:英雄无归 - It's likely not too much of a stretch to say that Spider-Man could be the most widely marketed superhero of all time, with only maybe Batman giving him a run for his money in that department. I've seen the character in so many different forms and incarnations over the years that after Far From Home I honestly thought I was getting Spider-Man'd out. Upon finishing this however, I'm now wondering if instead I'm just not that much of a fan of the MCU's take. Seeing all the bits and pieces pulled from the previous silver screen adaptations of Peter Parker made me realize exactly how much I'd be down for a fourth Raimi movie or even a third Amazing . Another Tom Holland standalone though? Despite loving Homecoming and there being nothing inherently wrong with this or its other direct sequel, I'd pass in favor of seeing his story continue in one the universe's shared outings for a few reasons. The first might simply be Jon Watts. It's no secret that when you sit down to watch a Marvel flick you're in for lengthy ride. Their very best releases however are able to somewhat prevent you from realizing this in the moment by how well they keep you engaged with the studio's established mix of humor, heart, and action. Watts is using the exact same formula, but has been unable since his first entry to apply it a manner that's kept me from feeling every excruciatingly long second of the 2 hour+ running-times in either of his two Home ( Far From and now No Way ) follow-ups. Then there's the supporting cast. I don't care about the likes of Ned Leeds or "Happy" Hogan the way I have the Harry Osborns and Gwen Stacys of the past, while the original interpretations of returning staples such as Aunt May and MJ are nowhere near as endearing. An unfortunate fact given what a large role they all play in these films and probably the best example of how not every aspect of the MCU's unique vision for Spider-Man has been for the better. None of that is to say this isn't worth watching. It's just what kept the biggest MCU event since Endgame from hitting home with me personally. When it's delivering on all of its wildest rumors however, even I was elated. Not every of promise gets fulfilled as it turns out stuff like the mid-credits scene in Let There Be Carnage was a complete waste of everyone's time, but there's enough here to make for a longtime Spidey fan's ultimate wet dream. I particularly loved how it gave me the slightest bit of insight into what the lives of certain characters were like after where they ended up the last time I got to see them onscreen. The whole thing also serves as a soft reboot of the titular hero that takes him back to his roots so the future is as always open to a wide range of interesting possibilities. Whether one of those potential directions it can go in will cause me to finally embrace Holland the way I did Tobey and, yes, even Garfield is another matter, but at least my curiosity as to what may come next has cautiously been piqued following a period when it had waned almost entirely.

2021年10月26日 评论 a review of 深潜之人 - Super low-budget Lovecraftian horror centered around the titular race of oceanic monsters and their proclivity for creating hybrid offspring with unsuspecting vacationers. You're essentially watching an average couple get weirded out by the locals on their coastal getaway as they gradually become caught up in the machinations of a cult. The acting and special effects are of course very shoddy, but it's almost worth putting up with if you have a hardcore interest in the Cthulhu mythos. If you don't then this will probably come off as little more than a particularly crummy creature feature with a few especially gross moments involving tentacles. There are a lot of things it does distinctly ineptly. Not least of all establishing a sense of tension and fear. In all honestly though I've seen a lot of less interesting concepts done quite a bit worse, and it's not like we're exactly swimming in Lovecraft adaptations these days (even though we do deserve much better). Look, I can't truly recommend you go out and see this as everything about it outside of the author's name on the cover is blatantly screaming "DO NOT WATCH!!" All I can say is I took the chance, checked it out, and walked from it ending up having not hated it. Do with that info what you will.

2021年8月15日 评论 a review of 疯狂神父 - Didn't quite work for me. Which is disappointing given what a huge fan I am of Napoleon Dynamite . Like that other Jared Hess comedy, most of the humor comes from watching characters in a slightly cartoonish world do and say ridiculous things in a deadpan manner. Only because this is a Nickelodeon production there are also fart jokes. That's kind of the problem. This is primarily aimed at children so the whole thing is very juvenile. Too juvenile even. There are some themes you can pick out involving being unhappy with your place in life specifically in regards to class and some shots taken at organized religion, but it will all go over the kids' heads while adults will be too annoyed by all the slapstick and gross out gags to care. The are certainly some funny moments, but not enough to keep this from missing the mark with the older members of the family.

2021年7月4日 评论 a review of 祖孙大战 - Dirty Grandpa , but cute. For the most part this family-friendly slapstick comedy meanders around without much of a real plot as grandfather and son go back and forth in a "war" of over-the-top pranks while swapping some touching moments with the rest of the house along the way. Outside of a rather tasteless gag at a funeral that involves the body of the deceased getting manhandled, it's about as inoffensive as you can get. Naturally, the older you are the less amusing all of this will be, but it's still worth putting on for the kids. Not only will it likely keep them in a near-constant fit of laughter, but also comes with a nice anti-war message on top of preaching the values of getting along with your elders. Yes, it's about as deep and original as an inflatable children's pool. That doesn't really matter too much though when all it's trying to be is a bit of harmless entertainment for the youngsters, which is something I can always get behind.

2021年5月23日 评论 a review of 活死人军团 - With the zombie craze of the 2010s having come to a disappointing end after the market was oversaturated to the extreme with mediocre-to-awful cash-ins and each successive season of The Walking Dead experiencing a steady decline in quality to the point where I just eventually lost interest, it's been tough to be a fan of the undead recently as there is currently a noticeable lack of any exciting new content in this area. So naturally when I heard Zack Snyder was making a kind of, sort of, but not really follow-up to his excellent directorial debut (2004's Dawn of the Dead ) I was intrigued. After all, who better to reanimate the corpse of what was once everybody's favorite brand of horror than the man responsible for what is likely the only good remake of an entry in Romero's defining trilogy and easily one of the best zombie flicks of all time? Unfortunately, Army of the Dead is not the resurrection agent I was looking for, offering up some decent brain splattering action, but little else to get excited about. To be fair, when it's being a straight zombie movie it's actually pretty good. The gore is delightfully over-the-top, the heist premise is legitimately kind of cool, and it even provides some nice twists on these classic monsters. The concept of "smart zombies" is one I've never been able to get behind before, as even George Romero himself couldn't make the higher-functioning undead come off as anything more than just plain goofy when he tried his hand at it back in 2005 with Land of the Dead . Snyder's attempt at giving these rotting creatures some intelligence however, shockingly makes them a bit more menacing and leads to a few unique and inventive scenarios before he inevitably takes things too far. The problem? It takes roughly an hour to get to any of this stuff. The first half of Army is bogged down with needlessly convoluted exposition and introductions to characters we are never able to care about (except Dieter) because they are either underdeveloped, get next to no screentime, or are flat out unlikeable. Then there's the final act where Snyder straight up jumps the shark in a myriad of ways, making it clear he doesn't know how things like, for example, the aftermath of a nuclear strike work. Or maybe he does and that was a part where I was supposed to turn my brain off and simply enjoy the ride. It's never clear just how seriously Snyder wants us to take all of this due to the weird amalgam of tones on display. There are elements of B-movie cheese and absurdity juxtaposed with solemn character drama and harsh acts meant to convey socio-political messages. Like Batman v Superman and the director's other more grand projects, it's a mess of ideas that never fully come together in the most satisfying of ways. Only this time imbued with the exuberance of 12 year old rather than the grimdark edginess of a moody teen found in his superhero works. If you just want to see decaying heads explode in a mess of blood and brains, Army can certainly provide that in a mostly entertaining fashion. However, despite Snyder's knack for creating fun action sequences the faults with things like the writing, tone, and maybe even the vision itself keep the film from being anything more than a watchable letdown. I've certainly killed two-and-a-half hours in worse ways before, but I've still been left with a craving for a better zombie movie. One with the potential to revive the infected hordes and our passion for them once again.

2021年3月9日 评论 a review of 马克思·佩恩 - A stylish, neo-noir thriller that comes off as Sin City -lite. Where Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's comic book adaptation received praise for the originality of its stories (as well as the visuals) however, this offers a by-the-numbers revenge plot. Despite all of its references to Norse mythology, its twists and turns remain predictable throughout. In fact, the only unique thing they bring to the table are the bizarre hallucinations the characters have of demonized valkyries. Admittedly, I'm not familiar with the games this is based on outside of the first one's surprisingly incredible GBA port, but I'm pretty sure there weren't any supernatural creatures in them, imagined or not. Even if there were, it doesn't change the fact that they feel wildly out of place in this movie. They do at least provide something interesting to look at though. Of course, there is also plenty of bombastic blockbuster action. It's serviceable, but at the same time these slow motion shootouts have got nothing on a John Woo flick. Probably serving as the best example of how Max Payne borrows competently enough from other, better films to be watchable in a turn-your-brain-off sort of way without ever managing to be truly exciting. As a matter of fact, aside from being woefully miscast with Mark Wahlberg giving a performance with literally all the acting range and emotional expressiveness of an actual block of wood and Mila Kunis being the poorest excuse for a Russian gangster I have ever seen, the real problem with this movie is that it's entirely forgettable. Perhaps not the worst complaint one could direct at this, but it's still indicative of a rather fatal flaw. After all, as adequate as it may be, why should you watch this when there are plenty of other options out there doing the same thing in a more enjoyable manner?

2021年3月3日 评论 a review of 太空生活 - A group of death row co-eds volunteer for a scientific suicide mission in space led by an artificial insemination obsessed doctor (also an inmate) to collect energy from a black hole and are forbidden to have sex with one another. Unsurprisingly, the ship's specialized masturbation chamber can't keep them satisfied and the resulting sexual frustration mixed with the unethical experimentation taking place and the whole crew realizing that "hey, this situation sucks, I hate everyone around me, and we're never going home" leads to a breaking point full of murder, rape, and self-inflicted loss of life. What is surprising though is that the movie doesn't get interesting until all this stuff passes and we're left with the sole survivor taking care of an infant. The concept of a science-fiction movie about a man raising a child by himself in the total isolation of the final frontier with no hope of outside support is a compelling one and I wish that had been the focus of the movie rather than all the other stuff. Instead it's just used as a means of delivering a message about beauty blooming from tragic circumstances. Which kind of works, but a lot of its power is robbed by the story being told in a nonlinear manner. High Life literally opens with the protagonist already struggling to be a parent on his own and makes it very clear that everyone else has died beforehand. So when the narrative starts playing catch-up to show us how he arrived in this position, not only is there no tension in the proceedings because we know every character's ultimate fate, but worse it all feels rather pointless as we were informed what the big takeaway is supposed to be at the very beginning. These missteps mean that the plot isn't able to generate the level of interest it should, which leaves the film to rely on its visuals and imagery to try and captivate. There are certainly moments that will capture your attention and stick with you long after the credits have rolled due to how graphic they are. However, High Life has a problem here as well in that there simply aren't enough of them. The most memorable of the bunch, a grandiose display of self-pleasure, takes place relatively early on making the rest of the running-time a bit of a slog as most of what follows isn't nearly as shocking or disgusting as it thinks it is outside of the regular appearance of semen onscreen. You also have to consider that all of this is taking place to convey the horrible things humans are capable of when horny, frustrated, and have no release. Not exactly original territory. Where it succeeds the most is on the design of the ship itself. The drab, almost rundown looking corridors and bunking really reflect the hopelessness of these criminals venture, with the garden offering the only source of happiness or potential in the surroundings in the same way the baby does in the lead's life. I can see why this has received so much praise, and I definitely appreciate what is was attempting to do, but it fell short for me in a few key ways. The primary one being how it was told. Had things of played out in chronological order I wouldn't have been so disappointed. Given the feature's fixation on carnal desire, I think the best way to describe it would be to say it shoots its load too early. The climax occurs at the start rather than after a steady build-up of pleasure, preventing what little sentimentality there is at the conclusion from being able to satisfy.

2021年2月16日 评论 a review of 千尸屋2 - This is kind of a disappointing sequel to House of 1000 Corpses . Following a violent confrontation with the police the surviving members of the "Firefly" family go on the run. There's not much of a plot beyond that. The whole thing just revolves around watching them torment anyone unlucky enough to be in their path and putting up with Rob Zombie's patented vulgarity, which I guess was intended to be amusing, but just ended up being annoying more often than not. I was never really bothered by any of this until things started to get rapey. So the real problem is that none of the violence or filth feels like anything we haven't seen before. Plus, what helped make this movie's predecessor so enjoyable were its twisted sights and visual flair. Here things are a lot more aesthetically flat. Environments were certainly grimy enough to make me feel like I needed a tetanus shot after watching, but where's the color or the industrial horror monsters that made for some of the first film's most memorable moments? Rejects' only really creative aspect outside of the wild soundtrack is that these psychopaths are being chased by a sheriff who's just as unhinged and sadistic as they are. This leads to a nice role reversal that sees the people who are usually the predators becoming the prey and getting a taste of the same type of cruelty they have dished out in the past. However, this too exposes a fundamental problem with the movie. When the bad guys are also the protagonists, who am I supposed to root for? Am I supposed to feel something when they get beaten and bloodied or are riding out in a blaze of deranged, bullet-laden glory despite their deplorable actions? I simply can't do that, and without characters to invest in I'm left with only the violence and stylistic choices to latch onto. Both of which fell short for me.
