2026年1月28日 评论 a review of 无处为家 - A surefire hit with anyone who's gone through life feeling alone and out of place. The movie focuses less on the depression that normally comes along with this, and instead puts the emphasis on how sometimes we just get fed up with everybody and everything. In this movie the characters actually decide to take a stand and there are plenty of laughs along the way. Lynskey and Wood are excellently cast. They work well together and are able to deliver the movie's almost deadpan sense of humor. They are also both so incredibly likable and are fantastic at portraying their character's idiosyncrasies. Essentially they are the perfect oddballs. The film's shocking and brutal violence is incredibly well done. First time director Macon Blair nails it. The tension definitely makes the movie a thriller, but the violence is right from a horror movie. A difficult combination that Blair nails. Probably due to his work with Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room). It's just an all around fantastic movie. One that's well-written with excellent characters, deceptively hilarious, and just the right amount of violent. The results are one of Netflix's best exclusives and a stunning introduction to Macon Blair as a director.

2021年11月3日 评论 a review of 哭泣的女人 - Feels more like a work of dark fantasy than true horror as it uses the weeping specter of Latin American folklore not as a means of terrifying the audience or even the family she's haunting, but rather to represent a slowly oncoming natural justice from those beyond the grave whose abusers have remained protected by the very systems that should have seen to their punishment. Similar to what Nia DaCosta attempted to do with the titular villain of her recent Candyman sequel, only nowhere near as convoluted. Centered around the Guatemalan genocide, La Llorona pulls from real life tragedy as a fictionalized version of one of the country's biggest political and military leaders during that civil war escapes the legal ramifications of his "Silent Holocaust" only to become trapped in his mansion alongside some relatives and a few employees by protestors. At which point he begins to be awakened by the sound of a woman crying in the halls at night that no one else ever seems to hear... At no point does the movie make any bones about what is going down. I mean, it's incredibly obvious who the mysterious new maid actually is from the second she appears onscreen. You know that before things end you are going to see the former dictator and general get what he deserves because that's the entire reason this was made. What keeps you invested up until that happens are the other characters as they struggle with internal dilemmas surrounding the subject and you wonder if individuals like his innocent granddaughter will suffer the same fate so that he may experience the same pain countless natives felt when he saw to it that the lives of their children were extinguished. It's an aspect the story plays on beautifully to create tension. It sort of has to because there isn't a single moment where the film is ever scary. María Mercedes Coroy is certainly a creepy presence with her odd behavior and long black hair that calls to mind the unsettling little girls of any J-horror series, but there is yet a noticeable lack of anything to put you on edge and leave you in fearful anticipation of that which could happen next. What makes me able to recommend this in spite of such an absence when I might not have found it possible to do so in other cases is its intentions. Instead of trying to keep you up for days on end, Jayro Bustamante turns an entity meant to terrify into a force that can right the wrongs of this world in a form of wish-fulfillment that targets the powers specifically responsible for the catastrophe as opposed to condemning an entire people. Making it moving and powerful in a manner the less meaningful releases in the genre designed to put butts in seats for huge box office numbers (e.g. the westernized Conjuring spin-off's take on the ghost) can't be.

2021年8月5日 评论 a review of 糖果人 - This isn't a perfect movie by any means.There are aspects of the plot that never get explained or just flat out don't make any sense. Like why exactly a black dude who had his hand cut off, a hook shoved into the stump, and was covered in honey to be stung to death by bees for impregnating a white woman is associated with candy. Wouldn't something like Hookman or Hiveman have been more fitting? Go along for the ride though and you'll be treated to a stomach churning nightmare with a sharp socio-political edge. The gore in this is phenomenal. Bernard Rose filled the picture with gnarly deaths and bloody sights galore that feel distinctly Clive Barker despite the author himself not being in the director's seat. Maybe even moreso than Nightbreed which he actually DID direct. So if you liked Hellraiser there's a good chance you'll enjoy this too. Kudos to them as well for managing to make the titular villain scary when unobscured in the broad daylight. As we've learned from the likes of Freddy Krueger, oftentimes seeing the monster in full view severely robs them of their fear factor. Not the case here. Now if only they had made it a little easier to understand what he's saying at times... A lot of effort went into crafting a legitimate narrative that goes beyond merely watching people get murdered and tackles socially conscious themes such as racial inequality. As I said at the start of this review, there are holes and illogical aspects, but it's almost easy to overlook them entirely in the face of how good it is at pulling you into the mystery, bloodshed, and terror. It takes a while for Candyman to show up, but the time without him is well spent as we watch the protagonist investigate urban legends which effectively builds the tension for his inevitable arrival. It also gives us a chance to really take in the rundown inner-city environments which along with the soundtrack that at points sounds like carnival music being played on a pipe organ makes for a very distinctive atmosphere. It would be remiss of me to not mention the acting. Normally in older horror flicks like this you get at least one or two lackluster to bad performances. Here though the cast is uniformly fantastic. The standout being Virginia Madsen in the lead role. She has to do most of the heavy lifting as her character's life is upended by the appearance of her supernatural foe. A task she proves more than up for as she carries us through the whole range of emotions allowing us to really grow attached to her character. This is a top-notch horror movie that pulls from real world issues to give its exquisite brutality some extra depth. As with Pinhead before, I got some strong A Nightmare on Elm Street vibes. Whether it's the dreamlike qualities of the encounters with Candyman or the memorable personality and backstory that bring the ghoulish killer to nonlife, the influence of Wes Craven's classic can be found throughout. Barker and Rose did their own original thing with the similar elements however, and that's what ultimately left me loving the film in spite of its bumps.

2020年1月25日 评论 a review of 绝地战警2 - Just when you think a Michael Bay film can't get any crazier he reunites Will Smith and Martin Lawrence to have a shootout with the KKK, turn Miami into an all-out war zone (twice!) complete with civilian casualties, get in a car chase where Haitians throw a boat at them, watch rats have sex, run over some cadavers in the street, ogle a dead lady's titties, and invade Cuba. Bad Boys II is a nasty, gory, offensive ride along with two homicidal cops that don't experience even a hint of remorse for all the death and destruction that they cause and I loved every second of it. After watching this it's easy to see why so many have such strong opinions about Michael Bay. Not just as a filmmaker, but as a person. You truly have to be a little sick in the head to come up with stuff this disgusting and mean-spirited. Yet, it's hard to deny his talent as a director. You may not like what he's putting onscreen, but he's placing it there with skill. The action looks absolutely spectacular even if it takes police brutality to a whole new level and things are much funnier this time around. The duo's ability to remain completely unfazed and uncaring no matter what dangerous or disgusting situation they're in is darkly hilarious, and their antagonistic banter now has the cleverness to match the crudity. Bad Boys II is the adolescent shoot 'em up fantasy version of police work dialed up to 11. It's all insane action, wildly inappropriate antics, and incessant bickering from start to finish. Bay crosses the line of good taste on multiple occasions, but he executes his vision with such gleeful enthusiasm that I couldn't help but have an absolute blast.

2019年11月10日 评论 a review of 睡梦医生 - 2017's Gerald's Game was a huge surprise for a lot of people. The book it's based on is largely comprised of imaginary conversations taking place in the protagonist's head, and many thought it impossible for that to be translated to film. Mike Flanagan pulled it off though. Showing that he could bring Stephen King's more difficult to portray material to life onscreen with great effectiveness and creating one of the best adaptations of any of the author's work to date in the process. I'd argue he faced a greater challenge with Doctor Sleep however. Not only does a significant portion of the action once again take place inside the minds of the characters, but the story also serves as sequel to The Shining . This put Flanagan in the unenviable position of having to decide whether or not he actually wanted to make this a direct follow-up to the legendary Kubrick film, or forsake any such connections and try to make it as self-contained as possible. No matter what the director chose, The Shining would always be a part of the conversation due to the shared continuity of their source materials, but the latter option did at least come with the potential to avoid some of the harsher scrutiny that would likely arise from establishing this as a continuation of what some consider to be the single greatest piece of horror cinema ever created. Flanagan ultimately took the risk and went the sequel route. Tweaking a few things from the novel in the process so that it could tie in better with Kubrick's version of The Shining . A decision that might have actually been beneficial to the story as it allowed him to remain very faithful to the source material while giving him a means to cut out King's ridiculous surprise relative twist. The new ending also redeems the lack of fidelity inherent in the Kubrick film by managing to stay true to the heart and soul of both books at the same time. While the events that occurred in T he Shining are significant in that they define who Danny is in this movie, outside of the final act that's a little too heavy on nostalgia-based scene recreations Doctor Sleep largely does its own thing and in its own way. Even to the point kind of moving away from straight horror in favor of something more akin to dark fantasy. For the majority of it's lengthy running-time it's decidedly not Kubrick which allows it to succeed on its own merits, of which there are many. This is one haunting piece of cinema with some truly horrific moments that will stick with you. It's a violent tale of mind-bending psychic warfare with a strong dramatic component centered around PTSD, regret, and the desire for redemption in a cruel, hungry world. All of which is backed by incredible performances across the board. Rebecca Ferguson's natural accent slips through once or twice making the weakest link, but her sexy yet terrifying villain is so memorable that it almost goes by unnoticed. I would really love to see Flanagan tackle more King in the future. The author has often experimented with more fantastical conceits of the mind and many directors have struggled making those ideas work onscreen. Flanagan however has pulled it off twice now with stunning results. Doctor Sleep is incredibly gripping. Pop-culture's obsession with the '80s throwback shows up here near the end and finds the director putting on an unnecessary Kubrick impression, but that's the single misstep in a movie that's otherwise confident enough to build upon and branch off from its predecessor in order to take a different path that cements it as a worthy successor and an excellent film in its own right.

2019年8月25日 评论 a review of 复仇者联盟4:终局之战 - Delivers. Endgame is the epic conclusion to the battle against Thanos we were promised. An emotional conflict that sees The Avengers going from broken and forlorn, to reflexive, to strong again and everything in between. The power of seeing these characters go through this journey is the heart and soul of the movie, and is not to be under estimated. The majority of the three hour running time forsakes action to explore the effects Infinity War had on who these heroes have become, and yet it's no less exciting than anything that's come before. Some necessary, if minor improvements have been made that will help the MCU moving forward should Disney and Marvel stand firm in retaining this level of quality in future endeavors. For example, I've complained about subpar CGI in quite a few of these movies that seems to arise from a lack of effort being put in, rather than budgetary constraints. Here though there's not a lackluster visual to be found. I understand they realized the need to pull out all of the stops for this one and therefore phoned nothing in. A mentality that should be applied to every MCU film going forward. Brie Larson also improves in her role as Captain Marvel. She doesn't have much screen time at all, but what few scenes she does have show much more natural her performance is this time around. I'm beginning to retroactively feel that my issues with her acting in the standalone movie were more the result of the directors as opposed to the actress herself. The character of Danvers herself though could probably still use a little tweaking to make her likable though. Endgame also deals with darker content than one would expect from a MCU flick. On top of dealing with themes of hopelessness and regret stemming from how The Avengers defeat led to the deaths of so many, the violence is also quite shocking for a film of this nature. There's a decapitation right at the start of the movie and a perfectly visible slit throat for audiences to gawk at, among other bloody scenes. It's interesting to see stuff like this given the relatively wholesome nature these films have been known for and I'm curious to see what kind of content this opens the MCU on the big-screen up to in the future (they've been doing more graphic stuff like this on the television tie-ins for a while now). A lot of this movie is going to mean nothing to those who haven't followed this journey across the other 20 or so films that came before it. You might still get some entertainment from the humor and spectacle, but will be totally lost on who these people are, what's going on, and miss out on the real impact of Endgame . This is for the fans. For them it's an ending and a new beginning for a world they've been following for years now. With events that radically and forever change the face of cinema's first shared universe.

2018年10月23日 评论 a review of 林中怪人2 - Patrick Brice manages to keep the titular creep from suffering the undesirable fate of diminishing returns by upping the amount of dark comedy and having the serial killer go through a midlife crisis. Desiree Akhavan is the perfect foil for Duplass. Playing a character that's used to dealing with eccentric people, she is completely unfazed by his bizarre actions or disturbing revelations and he has no idea what to make of it. She just continues to go along with his hilariously outrageous stunts. It's amazing to see the first film turned on it's head like this. Instead of trying to go for the same kind of mysterious, unsettling stalker flick as before, Brice rightfully decides to make fun of it's predecessor's more absurd qualities. There's a reason why Akhavan's "Sara" fails to see any danger in the creep (now calling himself "Aaron"). As she continues to push him farther just to see how weird he actually is, the more menacing qualities of his pathological lying start to fade away and you begin to pick up on his goofier qualities. Something that probably would have happened anyways had this sequel tried to once again go for a more serious approach to it's horror. This means what we've gotten is more of a horror-comedy with a preference for the jokes. The last 30-minutes however are a tense return to form where the danger begins to re-emerge and you start wondering just how much of this was another one of the creep's sick games. Mark Duplass once again gives an incredible performance as, well, a total creep. Delivering what is likely one of the bravest moments of his career relatively early on in the film. A shocking, standout scene that caught me off-guard. Outside of playing it a little too safe with the ending, this movie is the very definition of unpredictable and another example of why Patrick Brice is deserving of our undivided attention at this time.

2026年1月28日 评论 a review of 神奇女侠 - Wonder Woman finally gets her own movie after her long awaited film appearance in BvS. It serves as the DCEU's first critically successful entry, and for good reason. Princess Diana might not redefine how superhero films work, but she brings a great deal or heart and heroism to the table. Gal Gadot's performance has the right amount of hopefulness and naivety, while also being a total force to be reckoned with in the action scenes. Watching the character come to terms with the flawed nature of humanity is compelling. Director Patty Jenkin's depiction of WWI is fantastic. Elements of the fantasy genre are noticeable throughout, particularly in the first portion of the film. The bright, colorful environments are gorgeous and a nice change of pace from the blacks and greys of the other DC films it shares a cinematic universe with. The lore provides an interesting take on Greek mythology. Seeing such an optimistic, selfless superhero isn't exactly something new, but lately when every other hero seems to be struggling with their morals and fighting each other, it's good to see this return to form. Especially since it's done so well. After years of waiting, Wonder Woman has finally gotten her own film. One befitting of the character. Not only does she bring hope to those around her in the film, but she also uplifts DC comics fans by bringing them the first truly good movie in the DCEU. One that delivers in every way it needed to
