對，又是1966。對搖滾樂不算短的歷史來說，這是百花齊放、目不暇給的一年。除了Eric Clapton那張驚人的吉他之旅，Beatles出版了Revolver專輯，Bob Dylan出了Blonde on Blonde專輯，都是足以重寫歷史的鉅作。但是現在假如你去問Beatles的巨頭Paul McCartney，1966年最偉大、最值得紀念的專輯是哪一張，他一定會不假思索地告訴你：Beach Boys的Pet Sounds。而且他會雙眼發亮地說：這不僅是1966年最偉大的專輯，也是有史以來最偉大的專輯：「直到現在，我都還是經常放Pet Sounds來聽，並且邊聽邊流淚」。
Pet Sounds的靈感，來自Beatles在前一年推出的專輯Rubber Soul。打從Beatles走紅，Beach Boys的團長Brian Wilson就把他們視為可敬的對手，力圖超越Beatles替流行音樂樹立的高標準。從1965年到1967年，Beatles和Beach Boys的較勁是樂史無比精彩的一頁，也大大拓寬了流行音樂的可能性。這段時期的搖滾樂，正從簡單的青少年流行音樂逐漸轉變成複雜豐富的藝術門類，一群群年輕歌者不斷拓寬搖滾樂的疆域，音樂的內容和形式漸漸可以不受任何拘限，自由發揮。Beach Boys和Beatles都是從單純的泡泡糖音樂起家，而逐漸發展出愈來愈豐富深沈的音樂作品。到了1966年，Beatles早已不再是剛出道時那四個滿臉傻笑的小夥子，Beach Boys也早就揚棄了直來直往的衝浪音樂，而踏入不可思議的豐饒之海了。
然而這場兩大樂團的比試裡，Brian Wilson是吃了大虧的。他必須獨自扛起所有的詞曲創作、唱片製作和大部分的演唱與演奏工作，Beatles卻有John Lennon和Paul McCartney這對無敵搭檔，和George Martin這位功力高強的製作人。最令人驚奇的是，在1966年，Brian Wilson幾乎窮一人之力做出Pet Sounds這張唱片，並且真的超越了Beatles。有那麼一段時間，Brian Wilson在這場比試中打敗了所有人，成為流行樂壇最耀眼的天才。
Pet Sounds在台灣並不好買，但絕對值得上窮碧落下黃泉去找來聽。別被它土俗的封面唬住了，也不要草草聆聽一兩遍就判定它是過氣的音樂。它需要一點點的耐心，就像初聽歌劇和free jazz的時候，你必須調整自己的耳朵，把以前聽過的音樂暫時拋開，專心去體會這裡面層層疊疊的聲響。
在搖滾樂這個光環氾濫成災、滿地都是最高級形容詞的世界裡，Brian Wilson是極少數真正擔得起「天才」這個頭銜的人物之一。在Pet Sounds的製作過程中，他延攬了最優秀的樂手進錄音間，現場指揮調度各種聲效和音樂的進行，彷彿整個錄音室就是一個可以任他揉捏塑造的樂器。Wilson在Pet Sounds把多軌錄音的技藝發揮到極致，美妙的聲音一層疊著一層，交融出來的聲響，美得不像這個世界製造出來的。這也是專輯名稱的由來：他把種種聲音元素當成「寵物」在把玩，呈現給聽眾的，便是這些他最心愛的這些「寵物聲音」。
當然，Pet Sounds並沒有變成Wilson的個人專輯（儘管它在精神上是如此）。Beach Boys最令人印象深刻的特色︰美絕的合音，在這張專輯裡達到了前無古人的高峰，只能以「天籟」形容。在1996年出版的Pet Sounds紀念盒裝專輯中，你可以聽到整張專輯撤去所有樂器的清唱版，那確實是足以在上帝的耳畔播放的歌聲。
Brian Wilson窮其一生都沒能做出超越Pet Sounds的專輯。他在聽了Beatles的新作Revolver之後，陷入自我超越的巨大壓力，在他心目中足以幹倒Revolver的專輯尚未完成之時，Beatles已經接著推出了他們的曠世鉅作Sgt. Pepper，其中許多元素都是從Pet Sounds汲取的靈感。可憐的Brian Wilson在迷幻藥和創作壓力的交逼之下陷入瓶頸，幾度精神崩潰，甚至自殺未遂。這位曠古難見的天才從此過著低調隱居的生活，Pet Sounds那樣的巔峰之作，遂為絕響。
不過我們已經有了Pet Sounds，人生畢竟不該太貪心的。

跟许多灵魂歌手一样，Otis Redding也是在教堂的唱诗班里得到音乐启蒙教育的。他出生于1941年九月，父亲是浸信会的牧师。喜爱音乐的他，高中都没有毕业就辍学了。有一次，他在一家医院里打工，还因为忘情的在大厅里歌唱而遭到开除。
为了能够接近他所喜爱的音乐，他在家乡找了一份工作，替当地一支合唱团担任打杂的小弟，偶尔也客串演唱。1962年，他开车送合唱团的成员到曼斐斯的某家唱片公司去试音，由于主角不是他，在录音的过程中，他只好乖乖的坐在角落里，合唱团录完之后，他忍不住表示自己也很希望能有机会录音。在录音时间还剩余二十分钟的情况下，唱片公司老板同意让他试试看。
他录了两首歌，第一首让老板觉得太像他从小崇拜的老牌黑人摇滚歌手Little Richard，第二首则是一首抒情的歌谣曲「These Arms of Mine」，老板虽然并不是特别的欣赏，还是决定予以发行，结果却意外的成了他的第一首进榜单曲。
其后的几年间，Otis Redding陆续又有了其他几首R&B的畅销曲，包括「Pain in My Heart」、「Security」、「I've Been Loving You Too Long」、「Respect」以及替他赢得更多注意的歌曲，翻唱自滚石合唱团经典的「(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction」等等。其中发表于1965年的「Respect」在1967年由Aretha Franklin成功的翻唱并且夺得冠军，轰动了歌坛。
只是当时他的知名度仅限于黑人，对于绝大多数的白人来说，仍然没有几个人认识他。为了替他宣传，唱片公司安排了巡回演唱的行程，把他的名声传到了欧洲，尤其是英国和法国，接著他们回到美国，参加蒙特利流行音乐节的演出。他是最后上场的，也是那次活动中唯一的灵魂歌手，而在他上台的时候，已经过了午夜，疲累的白人观众很多都在打瞌睡了，根本无心注意这位他们几乎毫不认识的黑人歌手。
Otis Redding以一首充满活力的「Shake」，炒热了现场，使得他在那次演唱会中的表现成了传奇。而由于他也是第一次接触到那种嬉皮听众，他颇有感触，演唱结束之后，他在停靠在旧金山附近的一艘游艇上写下了「(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay」这首歌。1967年十二月七号，他进入录音室，把这首歌曲录制下来，在歌曲的开头，他加上了海浪和海鸥的声音，用柔和的节奏，唱出了一个孤独男人心中的渴望。
三天之后，十二月十号，他结束了威斯康辛的一场演唱之后，登上了他刚刚购买的双引擎小飞机，准备前往康乃狄格去演出。当时的他，可以说是志得意满，因为不但他的「Respect」被灵魂歌后Aretha Franklin唱红，他本人也刚被英国著名的Melody Maker读者票选为全世界最佳的男歌手，取代了过去八年由猫王所霸占的宝座。
那天的气候十分不利于飞行，空中弥漫著浓雾。起飞之后不久，飞机就在离机场四英里的地方失事坠毁，很快的沉没在冰冷的湖水中，Otis Redding就这样结束了他短短的一生，只活了二十六岁。跟他一起丧生的，还包括了飞机的驾驶员、他的仆从和Bar-Keys乐队的四名团员。
四千五百位歌迷和亲友参加了他的丧礼。在他过世之后，唱片公司发行了「(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay」，很快的就直冲榜首，成为他一生之中唯一的冠军曲，可惜他自己却享受不到那些荣誉了。1980年，他的两个儿子跟一个表弟组成了「The Reddings」合唱团，翻唱了「(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay」，并且得到第五十五名，成为有史以来第一首由原唱者的后人重新唱红的冠军曲。

《Getz/Gilberto》大概是Bassa Nova史上最畅销的一张唱片，企鹅爵士评鉴5颗星，《DOWNBEAT》杂志评介4颗半星，专集由三位老大联合制作，分别是Stan Getz、巴西歌手Joao Gilberto跟作曲家Antonio Carlos Jobim，还有Joao的老婆Astrud gilberto也参与了合作，值得一提的是嗓音迷人的Astrud在偶然的情况下进入这次聚会，却奠下了此后她在北美走红的传说，当然那又是另一个让人回味无穷的故事

This is the one jazz record owned by people who don't listen to jazz, and with good reason. The band itself is extraordinary (proof of Miles Davis's masterful casting skills, if not of God's existence), listing John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on saxophones, Bill Evans (or, on "Freddie Freeloader," Wynton Kelly) on piano, and the crack rhythm unit of Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Coltrane's astringency on tenor is counterpoised to Adderley's funky self on alto, with Davis moderating between them as Bill Evans conjures up a still lake of sound on which they walk. Meanwhile, the rhythm partnership of Cobb and Chambers is prepared to click off time until eternity. It was the key recording of what became modal jazz, a music free of the fixed harmonies and forms of pop songs. In Davis's men's hands it was a weightless music, but one that refused to fade into the background. In retrospect every note seems perfect, and each piece moves inexorably towards its destiny.

Bleachers have returned with fellow New Jerseyan Bruce Springsteen for the new single “Chinatown.”
Directed by Carlotta Kohl, the video for the song features Antonoff wearing a shirt that says “Welcome to New Jersey, now go home.” Springsteen appears near the three-minute mark as the duo ride off in a Cadillac down the highway. “I wanna find tomorrow/Yeah I wanna find tomorrow with you baby,” they sing in unison.
In addition, the band also dropped the single “45.” Both songs will be included on an upcoming album slated for 2021.
“‘Chinatown’ starts in NYC and travels to New Jersey,” Antonoff said in a statement. “That pull back to the place I am from mixed with terror of falling in love again. Having to show your cards to someone and the shock when you see them for yourself. Thinking you know yourself and where you are from ….having to see yourself through somebody who you want to stay.”
“I started to write this song with these ideas ringing in my head,” he continued. “To further understand who you are pushes you to further understand where you are from and what that looks and sounds like. There are pieces in that that are worth carrying forever and pieces worth letting die. ‘Chinatown’ and ’45’ are both the story of this — ‘Chinatown’ through someone else, ’45’ through the mirror. As for Bruce, it’s the honor of a lifetime to be joined by him. He is the artist who showed me that the sound of the place I am from has value and that there is a spirit here that needs to be taken all over the world.”
Bleachers’ new album follows 2017’s Gone Now. Antonoff has spent the last few years as a producer, contributing to Taylor Swift’s Folklore and the Chicks’ Gaslighter. He produced Lana Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! as well as her upcoming LP Chemtrails Over the Country Club.

Rank 'em how you like, Rubber Soul is an undeniable pivot point in the Fab Four's varied discography no matter where, or how, you first heard it.
